Read Hagen, Lynn - Tater's Bear [Brac Pack 22] (Siren Publishing Everlasting Classic ManLove) Online
Authors: Lynn Hagen
“What did your mate say about all of this?”
Chauncey grinned from ear to ear, a chuckle escaping his lips. “The little shit slipped me his cell phone number and told me to call him. He’s human, so I’m not too sure how much he knows about the shifter world.”
“If one of his fathers is a shifter, he knows plenty. Besides, he lives at Maverick’s, right?”
Chauncey nodded.
“Then he knows enough.”
“Do you think he knows we’re mates?” Chauncey sounded hopeful.
“Call him and find out.” Olsen winked at his brother before getting to his feet. “Just don’t let one of his dads answer the phone,” he teased before running through the front door laughing, Chauncey hot on his heels.
Olsen ran straight into Tater. His mate’s arms shot out to steady him as he laughed. “What’s your hurry?”
“He’s running before I strangle him,” Chauncey said before taking the stairs to the second floor two at a time. Olsen shook his head at his brother before looking into his mate’s green eyes.
“Thanks for saving me, love.”
“Is he going to be okay?” Tater asked. “I couldn’t help but overhear.” Tater handed him a pair of sweats that Olsen quickly put on.
Olsen swung his arm high, laying it on Tater’s massive shoulders. “He’ll be fine. He just has two overprotective fathers to deal with.”
“And an overprotective alpha from what I heard.” Tater walked with Olsen to the kitchen.
“Yeah, that too.” Olsen grinned when he saw his pa and D sitting at the kitchen table. His pa was sliding a mug of coffee toward the vampire.
Pa waved his hand at the mug, a grin on his face. “Just one sip. Coffee is the cure-all.”
Olsen wasn’t sure what D was trying to cure, but he was curious about the wolf. “If you don’t mind me asking, D, why are you avoiding your mate?”
D’s head shot up as he glared at Olsen. “I do mind.”
Olsen held his hands up in front of his body. “It was just a question. No need to bite my head off.”
D rolled his eyes. “Not funny.”
Olsen had thought it was.
“Leave him be. If he doesn’t want to talk about it, let it go,”
Tater chastised Olsen.
Olsen grunted but didn’t say another word about the vampire and the shifter. “Have you heard anything else about Christian?”
Pa nodded. “He’s getting better. The physician said the uncontrollable shifting has stopped and he’s gained his paleness back. His mates were driving everyone crazy, hissing and attacking anyone who came near him. It made it hard as hell to examine the guy.”
Olsen was relieved to learn the vampire would recover. He could feel Tater relax beside him. They had both been worried about the prince. “When he’s up to it, I’d like to go see him and thank him for saving Tater’s life.”
Pa grinned. “That’ll be nice. But I suspect it’ll be a while before he’s up to having company. And you’ll have to get past the two little princes, which isn’t easy.” He chuckled.
“I need to talk to you about something else,” Olsen said as he guided Tater to a seat.
“That bad?” Tater asked as he sat.
Olsen let out a breath and then related to them what had taken place in the field just as Bryce and Chance strolled into the kitchen.
“I sure as shit wouldn’t want to be those guys,” Chance said as he poured himself a cup of coffee. “Maverick is one crazy son of a bitch that I would never want to piss off.”
“Amen,” Olsen agreed. That was twice now that he’d gotten close up when the alpha was angered by someone else. It made a guy want to keep to himself.
“Balstic?” D glanced around the room. “Are you sure that’s the name he used?”
The three brothers nodded their heads as they gazed at D. “Why?”
“Oh boy. This is not good.” D worried his hands on the table in front of him. “Not good at all.”
“Spill it, D,” Tater said from beside him.
“Well”—D licked his lips as his eyes darted all around—“Balstic is my uncle, and he’s deeply into traveling to the demon realm. If he is the one that called the hit out on the four leaders’ heads, then you better believe someone else is calling the shots. He’s evil with a capital E-V-I-L, but he’s not the brightest solar flare.”
“I’ll call Maverick,” Pa said as he pushed away from the table.
Olsen sighed. He was done with this entire mess for now. All he wanted was to take his mate upstairs and cuddle with him.
“Cuddle? Really?”
Olsen couldn’t understand why his mate sounded so surprised, but if he kept it up, he was going to spank him.
Tater burst out laughing at the table, falling sideways as the tears rolled down his face. Olsen strummed his fingers on the table, waiting for his mate to gain some sort of control.
“Care to share?” Chance asked as he quirked a brow.
“Not in this lifetime,” Olsen growled. After a moment, a grin crossed Olsen’s face. The sound of his mate’s laughter reminded him that Tater was alive and could laugh. They may have a long way to go with Tater’s fears and the unknown, but as long as they leaned on each other, they could handle whatever came their way.
“You got that right, bear.”
Olsen chuckled as he tossed his arm over the back of Tater’s chair, enjoying an evening with his family and mate. Was there anything better?
* * * *
Chauncey pulled his cell phone out as he sat on the side of his bed. He was nervous as hell but needed to hear his mate’s voice. It was musical and made Chauncey’s heart pound harder than he’d ever remembered before.
He grabbed the small piece of paper from the stand next to his bed and dialed, tapping his thumb on his thigh as he waited to hear that golden voice.
“Hello?”
Chauncey grinned from ear to ear, feeling like a goober as he inhaled deeply. “Hey, it’s me.”
