For fans and scholars of the works of Eugene Manlove Rhodes, I created the epitaph he wrote in
Hard Country
from a careful reading of some of his poems. I hope it does him justice. A select bibliography has been posted on my Web site,
www.michaelmcgarrity.com
, for readers interested in the primary research materials I used in the development of the story.
Last and most important, Brian Tart, publisher and president of Dutton, is especially thanked for his strong encouragement and support during the past three years. He stuck with me when I stepped into unknown territory as a writer, allowed me the extra time I needed to get the job done, and with his keen editorial eye helped make
Hard Country
a better book. They don’t come any better. He “makes a hand.”
