She giggled. She could barely believe what she was hearing.

They stepped into the showroom and cast their eyes over the array of cars. “That one,” they both said, pointing at a green open-top jeep, then laughing.

Theo strode up to the saleswoman at the counter. “Good morning,” he said. “I’d like to purchase this Jeep to take away right now.”

“The Jeep Wrangler?” She looked like she’d just been told she was a sweepstakes winner, jumping up from her desk. “I’ll just go get the forms,” she said. “Do you require financing?”

“No,” Theo said casually. “Just cash.”

“Wanna drive it?” Theo asked Angelique.

“I don’t think I trust myself with a new car,” she said. She loved how clean it looked, how black the seat upholstery was, and the fresh car smell that circulated round the cabin.

Theo gave her a kiss on the cheek. “I trust you. But it’s totally up to you.”

She giggled. “I’ll drive the rental.”

“Okay,” he said, sliding into the new Wrangler. “I’ll drive ahead and you’ll follow me?”

“Right.”

When they got back to Kalani’s they found Moses working on the old Jeep in the yard.

“Where’s Kalani?” Angelique asked.

Sweat dripped from Moses’ face as he leaned under the open car hood. His look of frustration showed just how well things were going. “He’s inside helping his mom with something.” He looked up at the new Wrangler and frowned. “Were you driving that before?”

“Nah,” Theo said. He took the keys out of his pocket and placed them in Moses’ hand. “You tell Kalani this is for him when he comes out. All the ownership documents are in his name.”

“Huh?” Moses took the keys, looking at them in bewilderment. Then he shrugged and went back to his work. “Okay.”

“Tell him we really appreciate all he did for us,” Theo added as they got back in the rental.

Angelique smiled. “And that he has our number and we’d love to meet up with him again sometime.”

“Got it,” Moses said.

Soon they were on their way, but where Angelique expected Theo to swing onto the highway, he turned into another street.

He was just full of surprises today.

“Where are we going now?” she asked.

“I think at a certain place down here we’d be able to see Kalani through the bushes, but he wouldn’t be able to see us. Keep a look out for the yellow house.”

After parking the Jeep, they crept behind the bougainvillea bushes and caught a glimpse of Moses working away in the yard. Theo gripped her hand. He was the happiest she’d ever seen him. His heart was truly the most kind she had ever known.

It wasn’t long before the moment they’d been waiting for arrived. They heard Kalani’s heavy footsteps on the concrete and soon he came into view beside Moses.

Angelique watched as Moses put the Wrangler keys in his hand. “Those people left this. Said it’s for you.”

“Huh?”

“You heard me.”

“What?” Kalani said looking confused. “You mean they’ve rented me a vehicle?

That’s so nice of them.”

“Nah,” Moses said. “The guy said all the ownership documents are in your name.”

“You’re lying.”

“Nope.”

“I don’t believe this,” Kalani kept saying, over and over again.

From their spot behind the bush of fuchsia flowers Angelique and Theo watched him almost tiptoe up to the vehicle, as if he were on sacred ground. He ran his hand over the sleek, polished hood.

“Wow,” he breathed, then turned back to Moses. “This is incredible. I just can’t believe it.”

His face was a picture of pure happiness. He stood for a moment, dead still, a look of contemplation on his face, then threw his head back and laughed.

“Thank you, thank you, thank you, God!” he said, his voice louder and more joyful each time he said it.

Angelique looked at Theo and saw a single tear running down his cheek. He didn’t wipe it away. His smile was radiant.

Kalani rushed into the house and emerged seconds later with what Angelique assumed was his wife, his child, and his mother.

“Look, look!” Kalani said. “Look, a new Jeep, just for us! I can work again!”

The little girl, a tiny topknot on her head, staggered forward in her flowery dress and clapped her hands together, squealing with glee. Kalani’s wife stood, shocked, then ran to him and buried her face in his padded shoulder, crying with joy and relief. His mother stood, shaking her head.

Angelique thought it was about the most perfect moment in her whole life.

*****

Cat Island was as quiet as it always was, and every single person in Arthur’s Town had greeted Angelique by name and asked her about her handsome companion. By the time they got to the street of her family home, a narrow road with gingerbread wooden houses and blooming flower gardens, she was exhausted with talking and wanted nothing more than to flop onto the hammock on the veranda and sip on an ice-cold juice.

Theo took her hand in his. “I love it here.”

She watched the golden light of the afternoon play on his face with the shadow from the jacaranda tree overhead.

“I’m glad,” she said.

“I can’t wait to meet your family.”

“I can’t wait for you to meet them.” She meant it.

Her house was the one at the end, painted a delicate shade of lilac that always soothed her. She imagined how happy her family would be when they saw her. She’d decided not to ring ahead, but to surprise them instead. But before she even got to the gate she could feel something was wrong.

“They’re not here,” she said. “Look at the garden.”

“What do you mean?” Theo asked.

Her mother always kept the garden immaculate. There were a couple of stray tendrils, a couple of weeds pushing up from the flowerbeds.

Something wasn’t right.

She opened the gate and ran to the house to find out what she already knew in her heart. Knocking on the door, she peered through the windows, but there was nothing in there. It was empty.

She began to shake. No one had called her. No one had told her anything. There must be something seriously wrong.

“What the hell is going on?” She found herself running around the walls of the house, calling upstairs. “Josette? Mom? Cherie? Claudine? Dad?”

But no answer came.

A Note From Kay Brody

I’ve been experiencing a lot of

“firsts” lately:

my first book on Pre-Order, my first official listing with a big time promoter, my first paperback version of one of my books. The list goes on and on!

It’s been AMAZING!

And now here is another one:
my first spinoff series!

If you are on my mailing list (if you’re
not
, see below!), you know that this has been coming for some time.

You also know that my second spinoff, also from “The Greek Tycoon” series, is also being released at, essentially, the same time as this one.

So I am doubly nervous & excited!

It’s an unusual tactic, I know, but it’s one that I thought fit well for this set of characters and their “world”

I hope you agree!

I would love for you to email me with your thoughts and
would be
tremendously
appreciative if you would be willing to return to Amazon to
REVIEW THIS BOOK
.

As I’ve mentioned countless times before, reviews are
so critically important
for indie authors like me and they make such a difference!

Believe me, I’ve written more reviews than I care to think about so I know they can be a pain in the butt!

But, because many promoters now base the books they accept strictly on how many 4 or 5 star ratings they have, a “star-rating” (with just a sentence or two thrown in to show it is not a fake), can be the difference between success and failure!

Either way, thank you so much for reading this book!

I can’t express how much your support means to me!

It has literally changed my life during the past year, and I know our future together is even brighter!

Here’s to a mutually beneficial tomorrow…

With Love & Passion,

Kay
