“Okay,” She turned around to face him and smiled. “I just moved here, and obviously I need a place to stay, but first can I ask why you’re looking to share this place? There weren’t too many listings for roommates wanted while I was skimming through the apartment ads.”

Nathan shrugged. “Just covering my ass. I started a new job recently and I figured the help couldn’t hurt. I’ll understand if you need to look elsewhere of course.” There hadn’t been too many responses, and so far he had his pick between a drunk, a druggie, and some freaky goth dude.

“Good to know.” She breathed a sigh of relief. “It should only take you a couple of days. We can meet up at Frank’s coffee shop down the block same time next week, and if all goes well…”

“You realize we’re alone, right? If I was a cuckoo, you’d be in trouble right now.” He stood by the door and watched her stiffen, but he was only playing around, and he liked her more and more with each passing second. She was obviously a smart one.

“I have a friend waiting for me downstairs.”

In the present, Nathan smiled as he thought of that night so long ago. Heidi had moved in as planned, he’d obviously cleared the criminal check, and they had become great friends almost instantly.
