Chapter 21

W
hat do you want
, Michelle?” Lex asked after opening his door. He looked even more pathetic than the last time I’d shown up on his doorstep, announcing my affections. His eyes were bloodshot and hollow and he didn’t look like he’d showered in days.

“Can I come in?” I asked

“That’s a bad idea,” he replied, not budging from his place in the doorway. “I think you should leave.”

“Lex, please just let me say my peace. Then, if you want me to go, I’ll go.”

“Fine,” he said, “but you can say what you need to say right here on the porch.”

I bit down on my sarcastic reply, reminding myself that he had every right to be angry with me. I had, after all, broken up with him for no reason. I had punished him for my own insecurities. I needed to prove to him that I regretted how I acted.

“I’m sorry,” I began, thinking that was the best place to start. “I am so sorry. People started talking about us, and I freaked out. I treated you unfairly and if I could take it all back, I would.”

“But you can’t,” Lex said, sounding unmoved.

“I can’t,” I agreed. “But I want to make it better. I want to fix this. I want to fix us.”

“I don’t think we can be fixed,” Lex replied.

That statement tore through me, practically ripping my heart out of my chest.
He’s hurting
, I reminded myself. There had to be a way for me to fix this, I just had to figure out how.

“Look,” I began. “I know I was in the wrong—on a lot of levels. I didn’t treat you fairly about the extra work you were giving me, or about the pregnancy, or even about the consequences of our relationship going public. I have been made aware that I’d been allowing insecurities from an old relationship dictate how I reacted in this one, and that wasn’t fair to you.”

“And if I let you in?” Lex asked. “What then? What’s to say you won’t keep treating me that way? What’s to say that I won’t take you back only to have you walk out on me again next week?”

“Nothing,” I admitted in barely a whisper. “Nothing except how much I love you and how much I’m willing to fight for you—even if that fight is against my own insecurities. You’re amazing, and I am going to spend the rest of my life making it up to you—even if you won’t let me in tonight. I promise. I’m not giving up.”

I wasn’t able to finish my train of thought, as Lex was suddenly pressed against me. His arms were around my neck, pulling my mouth towards his. Once my mind caught on to what was happening, I wrapped my hands around Lex as tightly as I could, vowing never to let him go.

“I love you so much,” he panted against my lips, never removing his lips from my own.

Eventually, Lex did pull away, though he didn’t take his hands off me and didn’t seem bothered that I was unwilling to let go of him just yet.

Clinging to each other, we made our way into the house. In the living room, however, Lex did pull away.

“Um…” he said embarrassedly, running a hand through his greasy hair. “I should shower.”

Taking in his full appearance, I could see just how disheveled he looked. He appeared to be wearing the same outfit he’d had on yesterday, though he’d lost the jacket and tie, and the shirt was half unbuttoned. The wrinkles in all of his clothes suggested that he’d slept in them.

“Did you even go into work today?” I asked.

Lex shook his head, his cheeks growing red beneath my scrutiny.

“I told my secretary I was sick,” he admitted. “I left right after… yesterday. And didn’t think I was in any shape to go in this morning.”

“I’m sorry,” I replied. “I’ll make it up to you, I swear.”

“How about you make it up to me in the shower,” he replied, the inklings of a trademark grin pulling at the corners of his lips.

I had spent an hour getting ready for this visit, making sure my makeup was in perfect order. Plus, the last thing I wanted was to get my hair wet—yet again, in his shower. But I could hardly bring myself to care as I nodded and allowed Lex to pull me up the stairs and into the master bathroom. As Lex got the shower ready, I slowly undressed. I didn’t want the sexy lingerie that I’d picked out to go completely to waste.

Lex’s eyes bulged as I unbuttoned my blouse and slipped it off my shoulders, revealing the fullness of my breasts, which were nearly popping out of the tiny silk bra. I pushed my skirt to the floor, showing off my matching panties.

Lex sucked in a hesitant breath as his eyes devoured my body. I’d never been super confident in my looks, and after Scott, that had only gotten worse. But it was impossible not to love my curves when they elicited such looks of adoration and hunger in Lex’s eyes.

Slowly, I slipped the bra off as well, then my panties. Stepping into the shower, Lex followed me close behind, eyeing me as if he were a wolf, and I—his prey. He pressed against me, but I pushed him back into the water.

“First, let me wash you,” I whispered, reaching for the shampoo. I lathered his hair, then grabbed the body wash and meticulously scrubbed every inch of his perfect body. By the time my hand moved in between his legs, his erection was red and throbbing. I could feel my own juices trickling down my thighs. I gave his cock a few soapy jerks with my hand, before pushing him back under the water.

I appreciated the way the droplets spilled down his muscular shoulders and arms as he rinsed off the soap. Once he was clean, I pulled him against me again.

“Fuck me,” I commanded.

“Let me get a condom,” he replied, moving towards the shower door.

My hand latched onto his wrist, pulling him back towards me.

“No need,” I replied. “I… I’m pregnant, Lex. I just found out yesterday—I wanted to tell you in person. We can discuss it later, but right now, I want you to fuck me hard, and come inside me.”

The grey color of Lex’s eyes was merely a tiny ring around his irises, blown wide with lust. He was breathing heavy as he leaned in to kiss me. There was nothing sweet about the kiss. He bit and licked his way into my mouth with all of the passion of the last few days. And I let him.

Placing his hands on my thighs, Lex lifted me so that my legs wrapped around his waist. He pressed me back against the tile of the shower as he slid into me seamlessly. I cried in pleasure at the feel of his massive girth stretching me open. It had only been a few days since we’d done this, but it had felt like years. My body ached to be claimed by him, stretched open and pounded before feeling the hot wetness of his release.

“Yes,” I cried again as he continued to thrust into me. I had no way of gaining my own footing, so I was helpless to do anything but allow him to take me. He pushed into me hard and fast, chasing his own much-needed release as if, by coming deep inside me, he’d be able reaffirm his place in my life.

I was more than okay with that.

It didn’t take long before I was shaking with need, about to explode as the coil in my stomach grew tighter and tighter. Then it exploded, shooting wave upon wave of pleasure through my body.

My orgasm must have triggered Lex’s because he was soon crying out as he came deep inside me, filling me up with his release.

All too soon, Lex was pulling out of me and helping my feet slowly slide to the floor. We stood in the shower for a long time afterwards, just holding one another under the stream of hot water. Eventually, we dried each other off and made our way to the bed, where Lex curled against me, wrapping his limbs around me like an octopus.

“This is real, right?” he asked in my ear. “You’re not going to change your mind again?”

“No,” I promised. “I’m not going to change my mind. I’m in this for good. For forever.”

“For forever,” Lex repeated. I could feel him smile against my neck as I slowly drifted off to sleep.

Epilogue

H
ey
, guys, so good to see you,” Lori beamed at Michelle and Lex as she welcomed them in her tiny apartment. “I still cannot believe you’re going to do it. Babysit Gabby. Are you sure you’re up for it?”

“Yep,” Lex answered before Michelle did, and it made her smile from ear to ear. He really was invested in it, as much as he promised he would be.

When they finally did talk about her now confirmed pregnancy, things went a lot smoother. Lex had assured her that he would have hired help at all hours of the day, and she would never have to worry about not getting enough sleep, so she could continue with her internship almost uninterrupted.

Their relationship couldn’t be better. They were completely and utterly in love, spending most days together and planning their future. He promised her that he would take time off work to stay with the kids when they were little, so that she could continue working. After all, he didn’t really need the income, his job at Miami General was just a passion project for him.

But Michelle still had secret doubts that Lex would be good as a stay-at-home dad. That’s when Lori offered to have them spend a day with her daughter—just to see how they could handle a little kid. How
Lex
could handle a little kid, to be perfectly honest.

And here they were, in Lori’s apartment, on a rare Sunday off.

“Just give him a break if it doesn’t look like he’s handling it well, okay?” Lori whispered in Michelle’s ear as they both watched Lex kneel down next to Gabby out on the terrace. They couldn’t hear what he was talking to the girl about, but so far, everything looked okay. “Remember, Lex likes responsibility. He takes on all these extra projects and works every day late at night — even though he doesn’t have to.

“I know, I know. I’m just still scared. What if he changes his mind, and I have to stop working because he realizes that he can’t stand being at home with a child all day?”

“Somehow, I don’t think that’s going to happen,” Lori asserted.

They continued chatting, completely forgetting about the time, until Michelle jumped. “Wait, we’ve been here for almost an hour.”

“And we haven’t heard a peep from Lex or Gabby,” Lori smiled.

They walked out onto the terrace, and Michelle’s breath hitched. Lex was sitting in a kiddie chair, next to Gabby, a tiny table in front of them. They were playing tea party, happy as could be, oblivious to the rest of the world.

A thick tear rolled down Michelle’s cheek, and when she looked at her friend, she realized Lori’s eyes welled up a little too.

A
s they rode home
, Lex insisted they go to the beach. Michelle was in a confused but happy mood, so she agreed. When they walked out to the water edge, it seemed like the whole world was asleep, and only the two of them existed.

He asked her to marry him that night, and of course she said
Yes
. There was no doubt in her mind that he was the right man for her. He would never make her sacrifice anything she didn’t want to. He would never hurt her. And he would be the perfect father for their baby.
