Records by Val Shively, John Tefteller, Craig Moerer. Also Ray Passman, Alan Betrock (by way of Andy Schwartz). Robert Christgau loaned the use of his stereo and apartment to record a stack of borrowed 45s. Alan Warner managed to locate the Bert Berns demo tape from Mellin publishing in the vast EMI Music publishing archives. Ilene Berns started it off all those years ago sending me those Freddie Scott and Arsenio Rodriguez albums.

Thanks also to the San Francisco Public Library, the Performing Arts Library at Lincoln Center, New York, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Library and Archive, Cleveland, Ohio, and the
San Francisco Chronicle
library.

Frank Weimann of the Literary Group has put up with this venture for many moons. Editor Charlie Winton of Counterpoint Press is the real hero of the book, a swashbuckling publisher, brilliant editor, and friend for life. Dennis McNally gave the draft the first read. Thanks to the whole Counterpoint team, especially production coordinator Kelly Winton, copyeditor Mikayla Butchart, publicist Megan Fishmann and cover designer Tim Green.

In my personal life, so many people have been so supportive for so long, it would be a big mistake to try to single them out, but I would be highly remiss were I not to mention both my dear ex-wife, Keta Bill, and my great pal and wise counsel, Mark Schickman. And, as always, I am deeply grateful for the love of my darling daughter, Carla Selvin.
