What kind of hotel employee
would serve food like that?

Wearing a white coat with
black heels... those black heels...

“Katherine!” I cried out,
knowing it had to be her.

She stopped, the serving
cart stopped, but she didn’t turn around. She just stood still, looking
terrifying with her back to me.

“You can’t do this,” I said.
“You can’t...”

Katherine lifted her right
hand and then touched her lower back. I thought she was going to make an
obscene gesture at me, but instead, she ran her hand along the white coat.

What was left took my breath
away.

Smears of blood.

Katherine began to walk away.
I panicked as I looked up and down both sides of the hallway. To my left, I
needed to go find Jonathan and make sure he was okay, again. To my right,
Katherine strolled along, ready to disappear.

I ran left, following my
heart.

I turned the corner of the
hall and found Jonathan on his hands and knees.

“No!” I cried out.

“I’m fine,” he bellowed and
slapped his hand against the wall.

“What did she do to you?”

Jonathan moved his hand off
his face and showed me. Three claw marks, perfect and fresh. It looked like a
cat had scratched Jonathan. I thought about Katherine’s nails. Maybe she had
them sharpened to inflict this kind of pain. I knew what she meant by the marks...
I would have to see the cuts and the blood on Jonathan’s face each time I
looked at him. Something that would linger, forcing me to think about
Katherine.

As Jonathan stood, he
growled and shook his head.

“She smashed the cart into
my stomach, knocked the wind out of me. Then she... clawed me..”

I put my arms around
Jonathan and held him.

“We better not eat that
food,” he said. “I’ll call out of the hotel and have it privately delivered.”

“Is that allowed?” I asked.

Jonathan looked at me. “I do
whatever I want.”

His lip curled and I wanted
to believe in him like I had before. But something in his eyes showed me a
flicker of weakness. I’d never judge Jonathan Black for showing weakness - ever
- but if he saw that look in his own eyes, I wasn’t sure what he would do.

We walked back to the hotel
room and Jonathan kicked the food cart, sending it down the hall.

Three hours later we were
fed, full, and drinking wine. The tension in the air hadn’t gone away
completely but it tried. The bottom line was that Katherine wanted three
billion dollars. The same money that seemed everyone wanted from Jonathan. For
all the money he had, Jonathan could spare the three billion and not even
blink. I didn’t dare tell him that or suggest he should give the money to
Katherine. Something told me Katherine wouldn’t go away. Ever.

Jonathan excused himself to
use the bathroom and as he shut the door, I heard one knock on the hotel room
door. I forced myself to look out the peephole and saw nothing.

I opened the door.

Another suit jacket cleaned,
pressed, and opened, this time on the floor. I knew to look in the pocket and
my entire body shook as I did so. It occurred to me that this wasn’t going to
stop. That Katherine took pleasure in it all and it was now beyond the money.
She wanted something more...

I read the text message on
the new cell phone and found out just what Katherine wanted.

He’s mine.

It wasn’t about money
anymore, it was about Jonathan Black. She would do whatever she wanted when she
wanted to. To get to Jonathan. To have him. In whatever capacity she could. If
it meant killing me. If it meant knocking him out and, what, kidnapping him?

I dropped the phone and
stepped back into the hotel room.

I shut the door and Jonathan
came from the bathroom. He paused at the large window and slid his hands into
his pockets. Against the darkness of the city and the light of the hotel room,
he looked mysterious and powerful. A man in trouble. A man who deserved love.

A man I would do anything
for...
anything.

And that’s when it came to
me.

I knew how to end it all.

It was simple... I’d prove
my ultimate love and loyalty to Jonathan Black.

I would kill Katherine.
