“Hi Nathan, glad that you finally had time for your wife.”

“Cut the bullshit Steph, why would you do something like this?”

Stephanie stood up and placed a hand on her hip. “Screw you! I had no choice but to take drastic action after years of the lying and cheating. How long did you think that I was going to continue to let you embarrass me, huh? How long did you think that you were going to disrespect me? I got tired of it and so this is what you’re getting and it’s exactly what you and that whore deserve.”

“We stopped loving each other years ago and you know it! You’re the one that wanted to stay together for appearances and now for the child that we were supposed to have together. I tried to leave you numerous times but you begged me to stay!”

“You could have said no!” she yelled back. “You could have said no! Of course I wanted you to stay with me. I don’t know what life is like without you. I never put a gun to your head to make you stay, it was your choice.”

“You know that it hasn’t been that easy. You know it! So don’t try to pull that with me,” Nathan said angrily.

Dramatic tears welled in Stephanie’s eyes and spilled down her cheeks, “I only wanted you to love me. You’re my husband; there is no crime in that. However, if you can’t love me, then I know that you will love our child. Just be a good father, that’s all that I ask.” She placed her hand on her belly.

Nathan couldn’t believe it. She really was a nut case, why couldn’t he see it clearly before? He smirked. “That would be if the baby was actually mine.”

Stephanie looked at him in confusion. “What are you talking about?”

“Well,” Nathan said as he pulled a piece of paper from the inside of his blazer and handed it to her, “According to this paper. You were artificially inseminated under a fake name. But the DNA is yours. So how much did you bribe the doctors to do that for you?”

She ripped up the paper and dropped it as if it was hot to the touch. “This doesn’t prove anything!”

Nathan ignored her. “So is that what the $100k was for? Or was that what the other $200k was for?”

“You’re crazy. I don’t know what you’re talking about. You’re the one in deep shit, you should be kissing my ass right now!” she said shakily.

“You know exactly what you did and you’re lucky that I don’t call the police to take you out of here in handcuffs, believe me, I thought about it. You can thank Jamie for that, by the way.”

“Fuck you and that whore! You can never prove any of this and that’s why you aren’t going to do anything. So good luck to you and her, you both are going to have to deal with this media shitstorm. She can’t even get you out of this one.”

Nathan took a step towards her. “You harmed the woman that I loved. You almost killed her because of your insane and ridiculous jealousy. You don’t love me! You just don’t want anyone else to have me and that’s really sad. It’s sad because we could have amicably parted ways and we would be free to pursue the love that each of us deserve. But instead, we both are here. I will admit my wrongdoing but you have crossed the line and I won’t stand for it, not anymore. Trust me, I’ll find a way to prove it all. It wasn’t hard to find the evidence that I have, so it won’t be hard to find out more.”

“Did you ever love me?” Stephanie cried. “Did you ever love me at all or were you just using me for your image?”

Nathan snorted. “You think that you help my image? You think that having a wife that looks like a fucking porn star helps my image? It makes me look like an idiot! So the guy that you got to bug Jaime’s house did it for only $100k. So how much do you think it will take for him to admit that he did it? $200k? One million? Twenty million? I don’t care how much it is, because I will pay it. I will go bankrupt paying it. Everything that you’ve done is going to be exposed.”

Stephanie collapsed to the floor. “No, don’t do that.”

“There is still a way that we can handle this.”

“How?” she sniffled.

“You are going to go back to the house and hire a team to pack up all of your things and get out. You can tell the world that you’re walking out on me for cheating if you want, I really don’t give two shits. But you will never ever make contact with me or Jamie again. I don’t ever want to see your face again. If you don’t, I will tell everyone what really has happened here and you will spend the rest of your life behind bars. You and I end here, forever.”

Stephanie’s breathing got sporadic, she wheezed as she tried to take air into her lungs. “You can’t mean that, I know that you love me. I know it!”

“I loved you, there is a difference.”

Stephanie rose to her feet and threw her arms around him. “No, you can’t do this.”

He peeled her off and stepped back. “If you don’t leave, then I will have to enact my plan. You and I have reached the end of the road. You will receive divorce papers soon. Don’t worry, you won’t be poor by any stretch of the imagination but you are not getting half of everything that I’ve built.”

“So that’s it?” she asked. “You’re just throwing me away like I’m street trash?”

“I’m willing to sacrifice my reputation just to get you out of my life, s that should tell you exactly how I feel about you.”

Nathan’s phone buzzed and he saw the message. “There is a car outside waiting for you. Let’s leave my place now so that you can go.”

“Fuck you, I can walk myself out.”

Stephanie left the condo. Nathan walked to the window to make sure she left. Once the car pulled away with her in it, he locked up his place and went to his car

“Well she looked pissed,” Jamie said.

“She’s very pissed.” Nathan blew out the breath he’d been holding. “I’m just glad that it’s over.” He cupped Jamie’s chin and brought her lips to his. They shared a passionate lip lock in the midst of the chaos. “Whatever happens from here, we will get through it together.”

Jamie smiled, breathless, “I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Epilogue

2 years later…

Nathan sat on Nadia’s couch and smiled for the camera. Everything was finally in place after a long and treacherous trek. His life finally came full circle and despite everything that happened, Jamie’s skills at protecting reputations saved the both of them.

Jamie’s business was still running and stronger than ever because people trusted her expertise after she was able to handle her own spectacle. They stayed quiet for a full year and for the last year he was back on the publicity circuit. Sure, some people still had whispers about his life, but they were in the minority. Most of the media no longer ran negative stories about him and he could chalk that up to Jamie’s expertise.

“So, the word on the street is that two million dollars have been raised,” Nadia said with a grin.

“Indeed it has,” Nathan smiled. “So I guess that means they have to keep up my end of the deal.”

“What do you think, audience?” Nadia laughed.

The local crowd loved her, she turned in being a news anchor for a morning talk show and it was a huge success. They screamed their heads off.

“I guess the audience wants you to keep up your end of the deal. Luckily, we are very prepared for this moment. You can take a step over there and we can get started. We even have a couple of volunteers. Are you ready to get egged?”

The crowd roared and Nathan laughed. “Yes, I’m more than ready.” He stood to his feet and removed his blazer. The women whistled and hollered as they watched him walk over to the stage that was prepped for an egging. He walked over and the egging began. No one aimed for his face and it was all done in great humor. After they were finished the audience clapped.

“You’re such a good sport!” Nadia laughed.

“Well, everyone loves to hate me this days. I figured that I would use that as a way to do some good. If seeing me get pummeled by eggs helps raise money for Breast Cancer research, then I’m in.”

“Oh please,” Nadia waved. “We love you here and so does the world. It’s very hard to hate you after getting to know you. Right audience? We love Nathan, right?”

The women whistled and clapped. Nathan gave a gracious smile and waved. “Well, this is an issue that’s very near and dear to my heart because Breast Cancer took my grandmother. So whatever I can do to possibly help another family not experience that pain or to help another woman or man beat this, then I’m all for it.”

The audience clapped in agreement.

“That’s absolutely amazing,” Nadia said. “We need more men like you in the world.”

“I didn’t do any of this by myself. I couldn’t have done it without the help of someone that’s very special to me. Jamie, can you please come out?”

The audience waited patiently as a confused Jamie joined him on stage. She smiled and waved nervously at the audience. She was used to being behind the camera, not in front of it. He gave her a big hug and she returned it.

“Welcome to the stage,” Nadia smiled.

Jamie looked at her friend and grinned but also gave her a “What’s going on?” look.

“I didn’t want to talk all of the credit,” Nathan said, “I wanted to share this with you. I also wanted to say thank you for being there for me. Thank you for sticking with me when a lot of women would have left. You mean the world to me and I will never take your love for granted. Will you do me the honor of being my wife?” Nathan got down on one knee and presented her with a ring.

Jamie jumped up and down excitedly and said, “Yes!”

The following morning Jamie’s joints and limbs were slightly sore but in a very good way. She and Nathan made love all over their brand new house. She sat up in bed with her iPad and grinned from ear to ear. The articles and blogs about them were glowing. One even said that he went from hero to zero and back to hero again. America was back in love with him and he was on top.

“You know, proposing on live National TV was a very good idea,” Jamie grinned.

Nathan wrapped his arm around her and kissed her cheek, “It definitely redeemed me and I have you to thank. I guess it’s a good thing that the public doesn’t know that I proposed to you six months ago.”

Jamie giggled, “Well, the public will only know what I want them to know and that’s a fact.”

“Well, I must say, you’re the best at what you do.” Nathan slid a hand down her thigh.

“I’ll show you just how good I am.”
