“Unnh, what are you doing?” Kelly gasped, “Don’t go so slow….”

She started lifting her hips and rocking, trying to force the pace. She was squeezing down on me, and I closed my eyes and let myself feel it all. As I went in and almost all the way out, Kelly was meeting me with each stroke. It felt fucking incredible.

“Fuck, Kel,” I grunted as we sped up. She was rubbing herself against me and began making those little sounds that meant she was coming. I was so close too, and I pushed a few more times and then froze, feeling the blood pumping through my head as I came deep inside her. I collapsed and kissed blindly at the parts of her closest to me. We lay there for a long time, until she slipped away to get cleaned up. I turned over onto my back and half-dozed.

Kelly got back into bed, snuggled next to me, and laid her head on my chest. I put my arm around her.

“I wonder why having sex makes me feel sleepy,” she asked.

“Well, you do go at it pretty hard,” I muttered. I was almost asleep myself.

“What, like too hard?” she asked. Sometimes she got weirdly insecure about sex, even when she could tell how fantastic it was for both of us.

“Kel, it’s not a competition. Sex is good all ways.” I felt her body relax against mine. I liked the feeling of her bare skin and her warm breath. Even better was the sensation of privacy, that we could be naked, alone, and safe. We were sleeping together for the first time and it felt so right.

Wake Up Call

S
omething woke me up
. It was still completely dark outside and Phil was fast asleep beside me. Then I heard giggling and whispering outside our door. I went from fast asleep to red alert. When I went on my road trip with the Avalanche, there had been midnight pranks galore. I could hear Ada talking and Dave shushing her. I think Elliot was there too.

“Phil, wake up,” I whispered. “They’re trying to get in!”

He barely moved. “S’okay Kel, I locked the door.”

I felt better until I remembered that the door had no lock, since Ada had barged in earlier. I was going to hold it shut when I realized that I had no clothes on. I fumbled around on the floor until I found my t-shirt and crept over to the door.

“Fuck,” Dave said in low voice. “I dinna know this door locked.” He sounded drunk.

“Oh my God, let me try,” Ada whispered back. There was rattling, but door didn’t budge. I saw that Phil had put some coins in between the door and the jamb that were preventing it from moving. Was this some MacGyver trick?

“Can you hear them?” Ada asked, giggling some more.

“Shhh, lemme get closer and lissen,” Dave replied. I could hear him brush up against the door, and I figured he had his ear against it.

I couldn’t help it; I started moaning in a low voice. “Ohhhhhh. Oh my God, Phil. Oooooh, that feels so good. Oh God. Oh harder, harder! Oh, you’re so big, I can hardly… oh my God! Oh yes, yes—just like that, oh—that’s incredible. Yes, yes, yes!”

“What’s going on?” Ada hissed.

“I bet it’s good,” mumbled Elliot. “Ericcson said she was crazy hot.”

“This is fucking great. Hush, and lemme listen some more,” I heard Dave say, and then I slammed my hand hard against the door.

“Owww,” he squealed.

“Go to bed, Dave,” I called through the door.

“Oh fuck off, Kelly,” he said. “I think you damaged my hearing.”

“That’s not all I’ll damage if you don’t get out of here,” I told him. I heard them leaving, still drunk, but not so happy.

Phil was wide awake and laughing his head off when I got back into bed. “I guess Hoff won’t be trying that again,” he said.

I got up on one elbow and looked at him. “How come you jammed the door shut?”

“Well, I know what Hoff’s like. He’s always pulling shit like that, especially when he’s been drinking. One guys’ weekend way back was all it took to figure that out.” He started taking off my t-shirt, “And besides, I wanted to make sure you couldn’t escape either.”

“I’m not going anywhere,” I said, kissing his chest.

“I know. So, what were you just saying, about me being so big and everything feeling incredible?”

I was feeling all wet and ready, just being in bed with him. “Okay, we can have sex, but we’re not making any noise in case that pervert starts listening again.”

“Is that a challenge? ’Cause that sounds like a challenge.” He kissed my neck and then started in on my nipple, first licking all around and then sucking gently on the tip.

“Unnnh,” I moaned out loud, I couldn’t help myself. I grabbed a pillow to bury my head in. It seemed pretty sure that I was going to be making noise.

T
he next day
, we were the first ones up. That wasn’t a huge surprise, so we had a quick breakfast and then went out to hike the Valley Trail. The scenery was gorgeous and the mountain air was so fresh.

“Last night was awesome,” I told Phil. “I can hardly wait until tonight.”

He looked at me curiously and then laughed. “You know, I don’t think there’s a chick in the world who enjoys sex more than you.”

“Which only makes me the same as every guy in the world, right?”

Phil laughed again. But I started thinking about this. I did love having sex. I was always scheming ways that I could be alone with Phil, so we could do it again. But maybe that was because Phil was so good in bed. What if my first time had been with Nicklas? I had been attracted to him, but he was pretty selfish. I couldn’t imagine him going down on me the way Phil did. Maybe I would have ended up becoming someone who just put up with sex. Sometimes Karen would say things that made me think that she felt sex was the price she paid for having a relationship. Did your first experience with sex set the tone for the rest of your life?

Sex was huge for me. It seemed like when we were having sex we were most connected. We had a closeness, like we were totally united and there were no walls. Sex was the best way for me to express my feelings about Phil. I certainly wasn’t going to be the one writing poetry or even talking about how close I felt to him.

I realized that I hadn’t said anything in ages, but Phil seemed to be comfortable in his own head. I reached over and held his hand.

“Thanks, Phil.”

“You’re welcome. Is this for anything in particular?”

“Well, yeah, for being so good at sex,” I told him honestly.

He threw his head back and laughed loudly. “You’re one of a kind, Kel.”

After we had walked for an hour, I was thinking that we could have covered a lot more ground on two wheels. “We should have brought our bikes,” I told Phil, and he nodded.

“Next time,” he promised. But when would next time be? I didn’t regret not going out with Phil earlier, but I did feel sad that when things were going so well, we had to break up. I decided not to think about this and to enjoy the weekend.

We continued our hike and saw a couple of eagles. We got back around lunchtime and everyone was up and about by then.

“There you are,” Ada exclaimed. “We were wondering where you went.”

“I left a note,” I answered. “Did you not see it?”

“Yeah, but I couldn’t believe you were hiking all this time,” she said, as if it would have taken superhuman strength. After everything last night, Ada was really getting on my nerves.

We had sandwiches for lunch and then Ada wanted to go shopping. It seemed ridiculous to me that someone would come all the way up here, where the scenery and terrain were so beautiful, and then want to go shopping. We negotiated, and Ada and Samira went shopping while the rest of us went to Lost Lake.

The swimming was amazing at Lost Lake. The scenery was beautiful, including Phil who looked incredibly hot in his board shorts. I briefly wished that Speedos were in style, but I knew I get to see the whole enchilada later. The weather was hot enough that the cold water felt refreshing. We swam, played a little hacky-sack, and lay out on the beach.

We got back to the house first. We all had a beer and some potato chips, and the guys half-watched a baseball game. I wasn’t really interested, so I started looking through the bookshelf in the family room. It was mostly business books and thrillers.

Then Ada burst into the house and declared she was exhausted and needed a drinky-poo. Dave hopped up to mix her one. I wondered how long he was going to put up with this shit. I was willing to bet he missed the good old days with Karen who, in my opinion, was prettier, nicer, and lower maintenance. Samira came in with a shopping bag, and showed me the colourful teapot she had bought for her mom.

“It’s so hard to get her anything for her birthday. The woman has everything.” She sank into the couch beside Elliot.

“I think it looks really cute. I’m sure she’ll like it.” I continued, “I always get my mom the same thing: a gift certificate for art supplies, ’cause she’s a ceramic artist. I’m not very imaginative about that stuff.”

Samira smiled at me. “You should have come with us.” Maybe Ada was getting on her nerves too.

“No, you should have come with us,” I told her, and Elliot nodded. They seemed like a nice, normal couple. Unlike Davey-poo and Adiot.

“What are we doing about dinner?” Samira wondered.

Ada walked in with her drinky-poo at that moment.

“We’re cooking tonight,” she declared. “I’m a really good cook. The other girls can help me.”

Samira groaned, “I’m pooped. I was going to take a nap. Can’t we go out again?”

“Well, if you don’t want to help, I’m sure Kelly will.”

Phil actually snickered when Ada said that. My lack of cooking skills was legendary. But in the sexist way things worked, I ended up in the kitchen. Luckily, Ada was bossy enough that I only had to do exactly what she told me, and it was pretty menial stuff. I could wash dishes like a pro. She kept talking to me, but I tried to tune her out. First, she started asking questions about Nicklas Ericcson, but I knew nothing about him anymore. However I didn’t miss her real message: she was shocked someone like me had gone out with someone as cute as him.

“So Kelly, how long have you and Phil been going out?” she asked, taking a big swig of her drink.

I didn’t answer right away, since I was trying to concentrate on chopping the onions without taking off the tip of my finger. Having had a beer wasn’t helping my limited kitchen skills.

“Hello? Anybody home?”

“Oh sorry. I don’t know, I guess about six or seven months.”

“Really? Wow, even after all that time, you guys still seem to have a big thing going on. You were locked in the bedroom long enough. Can’t blame you though, Phil is really hot. He’s so handsome and that body—rawr. What’s he like in bed?”

I gave her an incredulous look. I had met her yesterday, and now she’s asking me something that private? “Sorry, I don’t talk about that stuff.”

“Oh, too bad. So I guess you’re not into tradesies either?”

“Tradesies?” What was with all her baby talk? She hadn’t even called Dave by the same name twice.

“Yeah, we could swap for a night. Davey’s not a bad lay.”

I couldn’t even answer for a moment. “Are you insane?”

She didn’t lose a beat. “Well, whatever. Maybe I’m asking the wrong person. I bet Phil wants to change things up. He’s probably bored after months of the same old thing. I’m sure Davo would be into it. You know, it’s just for one night, but if you’re all in love or whatever.”

Listening to her craziness and chopping onions at the same time was a bad combination. I did cut my finger, and it started bleeding. I ran it under the tap and then went out to ask Dave if he had bandages.

“Yeah, I think there are some in the bathroom. Medicine cabinet.”

“Can you help me, Phil?” I asked. He gave me a puzzled look, but came along to the bathroom anyway.

“Ada’s cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs,” I hissed at Phil. “She thinks you’re hot and she wants to do, you know, wife-swapping or swinging or whatever you call it.”

He started laughing. I messed up the first bandage and swore. Phil sat me down on the toilet lid, applied antiseptic, and then gently put a new bandage on. Then he pulled me to my feet and kissed me.

“Kelly, that’s so screwed up.” But he kept chuckling away.

“She thinks I’m too possessive, so get ready to hear the offer straight from the horse’s mouth. Or should I say the ho’s mouth?”

“Oh, someone’s getting jealous,” he teased me.

“I’m not jealous, I’m mad.” I didn’t get exactly why I was so angry. Maybe it was because she thought that he might be interested. Was there something about me that made people think that Phil wouldn’t be completely satisfied?

“Why are you all upset? She’s a joke.” Phil was finally getting serious.

“It’s not just Ada. Everyone says how surprised they are that Phil Davidson is dating me. Or they keep harping on the fact that you don’t go out with girls for very long. I get pretty tired of people saying how surprised they are that we’re still together. Like I’m not enough for you.”

I didn’t mean to say all that, but I guessed it was something that had bothered me for a while.

“Kelly.” He hugged me hard and then held my face in his hands. “Don’t let a stupid girl like that ruin our weekend. You get that it’s different between us, right? Different than everyone else.”

I looked up and him and nodded. Usually I thought so, but it was nice to have him confirm it. He kissed me gently on the lips and then on the nose and forehead. He tilted my face up to look at him.

“I love you, Kel. I’ve never said that to anyone before.”

Whoosh.

It felt like all the air had gone out of the room.

D
inner was a bit of a blur
. Phil spoke to Dave, so he started helping in the kitchen instead of me. That was a good idea, because I shouldn’t have been left alone in a room with Ada and a knife. We ate dinner and talked, but all I could think about was what Phil said to me. Phil loved me. We weren’t in a relationship with a firm end date; we were in something bigger than that. I could relax and let my feelings be whatever. But how did I feel? And when he said, “I love you” to me, he probably expected more of a reaction than a completely stunned look.

After dinner, I would have preferred to be alone with Phil, but we had already been antisocial the night before. Originally I was looking forward to hanging out with everyone, but with Ada around nothing was fun. We ended up playing board games. Ada kept trying to sit near Phil or be on his team. Phil easily deflected all her moves; clearly it wasn’t the first time he’d had to deal with something like this. He seemed to be using me as a human shield: pulling me into his lap, touching me, and kissing me. Finally, Dave commented on it.

“What is it with you guys? Usually you’re totally normal, but this weekend you’re straight out of The Notebook or something.”

I groaned when he said that. We had sat through that movie with Dave and his last girlfriend, Jamie, a few weeks ago. It had been ridiculous. For starters, the older actors looked nothing like Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams. The whole thing was a sapfest from start to finish, with holes in the plot you could drive a truck through. But Jamie had cried like a baby, and even Dave got a little misty, although he denied it.

Not surprisingly, Ada piped up that The Notebook was her favourite movie. I was beginning to think she was deliberately put on this planet to drive me insane. Finally, I felt like it wouldn’t be too rude to go to bed. Samira looked tired, and even Ada had slowed down her constant blabbing. Phil and I walked up to our room and went right to bed.

“Is the door locked?” I asked him as I snuggled under the duvet. I had skipped the t-shirt tonight, and I liked the crackling heat his body gave off as I wrapped myself around him.
