Epilogue

“Nothing in my life will
ever be the same,” I murmured.

“I know the feeling,” he said with a grin.

We were sitting on the roof, our legs dangling over the edge. We’d finished our tryst and I was happy; floating through a daydream I never wanted to wake up from. I turned to him. “I’m a girl who grew up watching Hollywood Musicals. Maybe that skewed me somehow—gave me unrealistic ideas of what life should really be like.”

My hands began to twist upon each other. “I don’t know. Those fantasies, those ideals… I couldn’t ever find anyone that lived up to them.”

Archer took my hand and squeezed it, compassion in his eyes.

But then you show up
,” I continued, tears filling my own. I laughed. “And yes, there were obstacles… putting it mildly. But it was worth it. Love conquered all—I feel like I’ve fallen into my very own Hollywood Musical.”

I smiled then, through happy tears, and leaned over to kiss him with all the gratitude in my heart. “You’ve made my dreams come true. You’ve made my life better in every way. How can I ever thank you for that?”

He was silent for several moments before speaking. “You can do me a favor in return,” he suggested.

“Oh?”

He leaned back on his hands, looking up at the sky.

“This is a special night,” he mused.

“Tell me about it.”

“For more than that,” he said, chuckling. “Look at the sky. You can see the stars. It’s not often you see the stars in Hollywood. Actual stars.”

I followed his gaze. “You’re right,” I said. The sky was spangled, from horizon to horizon. “It’s beautiful.”

“There’s a full moon, too. The only thing brighter in the sky than the stars. It’s a perfect night.”

I looked over at Archer with a smile. I hadn’t expected a man with all his money and power to care about simple things like sitting on a rooftop, looking up at the sky together.

“You know what this sky reminds me of?” he asked suddenly.

“No, what?”

“The last lines of that old Bette Davis movie,
Now, Voyager
. I’m assuming you’ve seen it.”

“Only every single time it’s on TV, and when I’m in the mood to watch it on Blu-ray.”

He laughed. “Do you remember when Paul Henreid asks Bette to marry him at the end of the movie? She says, ‘Don’t let’s ask for the moon. We have the stars.’ And that beautiful Max Steiner score swells up in the background. It’s one of my favorite movie endings, ever.”

I hated to disagree with him, but…
“He doesn’t ask her to marry him. He asks if she’s happy helping him raise his daughter. Basically to be his mistress.” I turned to him, giggling.

The laughter stopped dead in my throat when I saw the small, velvet box in his hand. “Sorry there’s no Max Steiner score,” he murmured. Then he opened the box, and I could have sworn one of those stars had fallen to earth and found its way onto the ring within it.

“Oh…Archer…”

“Please give me my happily ever after, Josie. Please tell me you’ll be my wife.”

Tears spilled down my cheeks. “Do you even have to ask?” I laughed, holding out my hand to accept the ring. But I didn’t look at it. I didn’t need to. He was all I’d ever need, because no movie could ever end better than this.

-The End-

Author’s Note

Thank you for reading my Hollywood series. I like to think that these four books are sprinkled with a little bit of movie magic. There’s a great romance, of course, and blackmail too. Throw in a sexy hero (always a Hollywood favorite), a damsel in un-dress (I’d say distress, but to my thinking she actually saved the day) and some great old time movie references, and hopefully you get something you want to read again and again!

The idea behind this series was suggested by two very good friends of mine, James and Renee. I’d like to give a special shout out to them here; without their input the series might never have existed. Renee also helped pick the cover for this series—I must say Archer looks suspiciously like James, though if you were to ask her, she’d deny it ;)

If you have enjoyed my work, you may also wish to consider reading some of my other books, including my series about a
woman working for a Billionaire
, and
a librarian who meets a sexy stranger
during a snow storm.
