“And you learned to hate humans,” she stated.

“Yes. I learned to hate those who took away my parents and put fear in my sister’s eyes. I didn’t know any other way to fight it, any other way to deal with it. And then the Fates brought me you, a human I could not hate, no matter what I thought.”

“But you do hate me.”

“No, I hated what you represented in my mind. To me I was belittling my parents’ memory. Then you stood before me, full of pride and courage, and basically told me to go screw myself. I had never been so conflicted in my life. My sister and my beta, Oron, never denied you. For them, you were just my mate, and my sister saw within you a lost soul like her.”

“Not wanted by either side,” Siren confirmed. She sighed heavily, snuggling closer to his chest. “I find myself unable to fight against this.”

“Then don’t. We may have had a rough start, but I swear to you I am more than satisfied with my mate.”

Siren shrugged against his chest, not commenting. After a few minutes, she looked up at him, her eyes glowing.

“Why do I feel so different? What happened earlier?”

He’d known the question would be coming.

“How much did you hear?”

“Josephine said something about a latent. Josephine!” Siren sat straight up in bed, clasping the cover to her chest.

“Josephine left by the time I reached out to you. She knew what was coming,” he said, chuckling. He sobered, though, when he answered her question. “Have you ever wondered why you look so much like a Senser and yet are human?”

“Countless times.”

“There is a reason. I had never heard of it myself, but Josephine saw it in you. When an Oracle mother dies, she kills off her entire Senser line. However, if one is conceived at the exact moment of her death, that child lives, as a human, with its Senser power locked deep within their soul. In essence, you are one of those children.”

“My father died before I was born. They never talked about it.”

“I would suppose not if he died in a…compromising position and then disappeared as if he never was. If your mother hadn’t known he was a Senser, she’d have known then.”

“So I was never really human.”

“You are a precious gift that had the chance to walk in both worlds. A worthy woman to walk by my side, bear my children, and have my love.”

“Love? Who ever said anything about love?”

“You don’t feel the connection? The need? You couldn’t feel it when I touched you?” He pulled her tighter in his arms and stared into her eyes.

Chapter Fourteen

Siren didn’t know what she felt as she stared at Xavier. It couldn’t possibly be love, not so fast. They may be mates, but there was no way they could have bridged the gap from enemies to love. Could they?

She watched him as he watched her in silence. Everywhere she looked on him brought forth emotion, from his lips that had brought such pleasure, to his eyes that looked at her with such desire, to his hands that cradled her so surely. She didn’t have much experience with love, but she knew that she didn’t want to be without this man. She didn’t want to be alone anymore. She wanted to be held, to know what life could really be like. And it seemed that she was now a Senser. She’d have many years to enjoy just that.

“Can one love in nothing but a day?” she asked pointedly. She waited with bated breath for his answer. For some reason, it was more important than she could imagine.

“Yes. For me at least. I love you, Siren. I have seen inside your very soul. You have seen me at my darkest. Believe the light now.”

Siren didn’t think she’d ever felt the pure happiness that flowed through her now. She knew there would be plenty to work out, a sister to get to know, and powers to learn to control. But at least now she knew she would never be alone again. For them, love would be taking a leap of faith to face the world together, and that she could live with.

“I love you, too. For good or for bad, you’re stuck with me,” she said, laughing.

“I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
