“I’ve made your favourite,” he motioned to the cooker.

“Whatever it is it’s burning …” said Ailsa staring at the blue line of smoke curling from the oven door. In seconds he’d thrown it into the garden, dish and all.

“I don’t love your gruesome gourmet skills though. Stick to being a sex expert.”

“I never want to lose you again. I love you; losing you hurts my heart like it does with Jake. You make me crazy with wanting you.”

She brushed his hair with her fingertips. “This time I’m not evading.”

“I’ve compiled another list,” he told her, pushing a handwritten note to her.

Nick’s list was brief and to the point:

  • Make Ailsa dinner, propose and hope she says yes

  • Ask Ailsa to move in, do everything to make it work

  • Great life, more kids

  • Plenty of seduction practice – not that she ever needed it but it was fun to play along

“Come on,” said Nick removing his apron. “See the house – especially the master suite. The ensuite has a whirlpool Jacuzzi and a knock-out wet room; it’s why I bought the place.”

Ailsa shook her hair loose. “I’ve undergone changes while you’ve been gone. Wearing spectacles; below the knee skirts. Calming my act down; can you handle a quiet girl who’s out of practice?”

He half closed one eye. “Demands intensive instruction but I think I’m qualified.” And with a wide grin Nick chased her up the stairs to prove it.
