At that, Michael cracked a faint smile but it vanished just as quickly. “You aren’t upset that I hurt you? A man hitting a woman…” he started, looking slightly sick.
Becca searched herself and found no sign of animosity toward her lover. “It’s not like you poked me with sharp sticks for hours at a time.” She bit her lip to keep from smiling at his expression at that one. “You did what you had to do to keep me from spending an eternity locked inside that thing’s head while it slowly went mad.” She laid a hand over his where their seat arms met. “A few bumps and bruises come with the territory. We aren’t florists.”
Leaning over, Michael kissed her lips gently and Becca oozed into it.
“You’re an unusual woman, Rebecca Sauter.” He grinned at her when he pulled away.
“I know. You’re just lucky to know me,” she shot back. Realizing she was oddly giddy, Becca had a sobering thought.
Sensing exactly where her thoughts went, Michael squeezed her hand. “I didn’t give you any. You’re lightheaded because of what the demon took. We considered stopping at the hospital and picking up human blood to do a normal transfusion but we thought it best to leave before too many unanswerable questions were asked.”
By his level of discomfort, Becca could guess whose suggestion it had been that they get the hell out of town. The lack of blood explained her feelings of sluggish euphoria. It was an odd sort of high but one she was getting used to in her line of work. The fact that she was still bruised actually should have told her she hadn’t had any of his blood. It would most likely be gone by tomorrow if his previous transfusion continued to linger. Not now, she told herself. She didn’t need to revisit that worry tonight.
Nestling her head against his arm, Becca let out a big breath. “When are we due home?” she asked him quietly.
“Within the hour. The admiral’s waiting,” he told her gently.
Becca didn’t need to ask what or why he would be waiting. More than just a debriefing, he would be looking for progress on her “homework.” She wondered what he would think of the fact that not only had she figured out how to jump into a demon’s head, but she could do two jumps at once.
Sighing deeply again, Becca felt her euphoria give way to exhaustion and she closed her eyes. Cool lips pressed against her temple and she smiled sleepily.
“We only have to answer the questions he thinks to ask,” Michael reminded her. “There are some things even
he
wouldn’t dream possible.”
