“Do you want painkillers?” Liam asked.
“Yeah. Do you know where they are?”
“Yup.” Liam returned a minute later with two tablets and a glass of water.
Wig chugged back the pills and waited to either hurl or collapse into a heap in the corner. When it looked like it was going to be the latter, Nibs said, “Do you want to go to bed, love?”
Wig thought about it and nodded, wincing as the pain shot through his head.
“That was a stupid thing to do. Come on.” Nibs heaved Wig up and led him out of the room to a chorus of good nights.
As Wig settled into bed he said, “Does that mean it’s all over? We needn’t worry about someone attacking us in the middle of the night again?”
Nibs sat down next to Wig and patted his hand. “Looks like it, and our business is safe.”
“It all seems such an anticlimax somehow. Don’t these tales end with explosions or something?”
Nibs smirked at him. “Want me to put on a white vest and go all Brucie on you?”
“I do hope you mean Bruce Willis and not Bruce Forsyth.”
“Gimme some credit.”
Wig nodded. “It just seems like we lived through all that, for what? The Sawars bugger off, and now the bad guys are in prison.”
“Better that than the alternative. Aren’t you a tiny bit relieved?”
“I guess.” At Nibs’s skeptical look he said, “Yes, I am. I’m just tired, that’s all. Of course I’m pleased the bad guys are going to be put away. I keep expecting to find the restaurant trashed or wake up to hear people moving around downstairs.”
“Life isn’t always explosions, babe. Sometimes life just carries on.” Nibs leant forward and kissed Wig’s forehead. “Go to sleep, love. We’ve got a long day tomorrow.”
“Another one,” Wig said drily.
“Together.”
Wig smiled at him. “Best possible outcome.”
“Better than explosions?” Nibs asked.
“Better than Brucie in a vest.”
“Willis?”
“Forsyth.”
Nibs gagged. “You’re a sick man, Wig Tobias.”
Wig grinned. “Ya know it, gorgeous.”
