Chapter 1

Jade pulled her cloak that Marion had obtained tightly around herself. The lecher of an inn keeper had stared rather obviously at her chest when they had all come in to find rooms for the night. Annoyed that the chivalrous divine knight had not said anything to the man in response to his actions, she thought it was for the best anyway. If he were to act normally they would stand out from the rest of the lowlives in this town, which in turn would make it near impossible to get any information from this sort.

After she was finished rationalizing why she should be happy that he wasn’t defending her as he had Kern, she wondered if the elven girl could carry out the little mission she had given her. In the moment it took Jade to glance out the window, the girl had vanished already. Hopefully all went well and Keegan hadn’t abandoned his post at the edge of town. The Larin agent was the one who had struck up the deal with the Lord Monfrel in the first place. He was the smuggler that her father relied on to get him the latest weapons and news from the other realms.

Marion turned to her then, showing her the flash of keys. “Let’s go set out packs in the room and freshen up. I could use a bath after being on the road for so long.”

In the room she would share with Kern, Jade paced back and forth in front of the window nervously. The twilight sun had set already and the moon was riding high in the dark cloudless sky. She could hear the sound of splashing water from the adjoined room which was Marion’s. He was already taking his bath, which meant she would have to act soon. There would be no better time to sneak into his room and seduce him then when he was relaxing.

His guard would hopefully be lowered because of this and he would be more willing to accept her advances. If everything went smoothly then she would be able to slip out once he was asleep and make her way to Keegan’s.

“This shouldn’t be so hard to do.” She said aloud, wishing the feeling of butterflies in her stomach would evaporate. This was one tactic that she wasn’t familiar with and wouldn’t be doing if her situation wasn’t so dire. Grindalor was probably her last chance to form some way of escape from the jelwin. In theory this was supposed to be simple.

Maybe she should get undressed as well? She didn’t have anything like night clothes to change into, but she couldn’t stand the thought of walking in there bare bottomed. Hearing a large splash of water that sounded like him standing, she panicked and flew to the door. With her hand on the door handle, she paused and looked back at her room, trying to think of some other way, but she couldn’t come up with anything else. This was her only recourse.

Frustrated with the emotions that were causing her hesitation, she slid one of the shoulders of her dress down to reveal smooth alabaster flesh and opened the door. Stepping in boldly as if she belonged there, her eyes were immediately drawn to his commanding presence. He was standing in front of the fire holding a glass of wine, and he was still completely naked. Rivets of fire light played across his body, casting shadows in the planes between his muscles. As she stood in awe of him, her eyes were eventually drawn down over his chest and then his lower abdomen by the cascading, fire colored water droplets from the bath.

She must have made a startled noise when her gaze found the rather large evidence of his manhood, as his gaze swung over to where she stood. Jade could see his strong muscles in his shoulders stiffen when he saw who was there in his room, and also noticed that wasn’t the only part of him that went rigid. Feeling like her whole face must be red, she bit her lower lip and started what she hoped looked like a seductive saunter up to him, her hips swaying in invitation.

“What are you doing here, Jade?” He asked roughly; his deep, normally composed voice was now gruff. He made no attempt to turn and hide his arousal from her, nor did he seem concerned at how she was approaching him. She had assumed that he was unaffected by her with the way he acted so callously with her, but once she got close enough she could see clearly. Though his face was set in a trained expression of disinterest, she could see how his ember eyes burned hotter than any fire, or how his nostrils flared a little as she stopped inches from him.

As much as he talked like he hated her, or how he said that she was cold hearted, he wanted her. She had never seen a man look that way, like he was waging an inner battle with his desires. His eyes darted over to her bare shoulder, lingering a moment before sliding back up. Speechless and unsure what to say as their eyes locked together, she went to caress his chest and found her hand was trembling when she reached out.

Touching the strong wall of his chest, she could feel his tightly knit muscles and the tension from his tightly reigned lust. Jade was surprised in that moment to find that his control must be unparalleled, any other man would have already sprang forward and ravished her.

“You really shouldn’t be in here like this. You don’t know what your playing with.” He warned. She briefly thought of backing off, but this was the only chance she was going to get. This was very different from the way she thought it would be. She thought it would be simple if not a little awkward to coax him to lay with her, but this heat she was feeling threatened to consume her.

Afraid of being swept away by the intense maelstrom of desire, she dropped her gaze to the floor. Shrugging off the other shoulder of her dress, she tugged it down slowly. She paused uncertainly just before exposing her breasts, the trembling growing stronger and spreading through out her body. Why was she reacting like this to him?

Hearing a strained primal growl, she looked up in just enough time to see him throwing the wine glass into the fire. Crimson liquid splashed and sizzled in the flames as he lunged forward. His hands grabbed the bodice of the dress, ripping it in one swift motion and rendering her bare all the way to her navel. Free from their confinement, her bountiful breasts bouncing from his rough actions.

His hungry eyes roamed over her pale flesh, his expression of poise shattered, replaced by one of carnal need. When finally their eyes met again, the only noise in the room was the crackling of the fire and the sizzle of the wine in the hearth. Like magnets they were drawn together then, Jade could feel the pull of something she didn’t quite understand but couldn’t resist. Marion wrapped his arms around her body in a lust fueled embrace, her arms sliding around his neck. As he crushed her against him, his mouth claimed hers with a mind numbing kiss that made everything around them fade away. The crackle of energy she had felt the first night they’d met came back with force, making her half expect to hear a peel of lightning close by.

She felt his tongue like hot silk playing at her own, inviting it to join in. His kiss rocked her to the core and she longed for more. Tentative at first she rolled her tongue across his but became increasingly more bold at the strained noise of pleasure he made when she did; their lips slanting across each others, hungry for more while the feeling inside of her became a fever pitch.

Before she could make heads or tails of what was happening, he scooped her up then and in four great strides was at the beds side. Barely breaking the kiss for a moment except when he damn near threw her on the bed, he came down and their lips locked again in another passionate kiss. Stretching his long body on top of hers, pinning her to the bed. Leaning her head back she moaned with pleasure while his hands caressed her breasts. Trailing nips and kisses down her neck like he had wanted to from the moment he’d met her. Using one of his thighs he nudged her own open gently and positioned himself in between them.

Jade squirmed in the agonizing sensations she was caught up in. Though her body seemed to resonate and her mind fogged by pleasure, she felt like there was something else she needed. Like her body craved an even deeper ecstasy that was eluding her. Moaning as he came to rest in the crux of her thighs, she instinctively arching her hips and grinding against him. The hardness of his arousal pressing against her body was driving her insane.

Marion noticed that the remnants of what was left of her dress were still in his way. Capturing her tantalizing lips in a brutal kiss, he lost the last shred of self control he had been trying to hold on tight too. Lifting himself up onto his forearms, he reached down and attempted to move the blasted clothing out of the way. That’s when he heard the door in the adjoined room crash open and Kern’s voice calling out to Jade.

Chapter
2

“Jade I found the guy you were looking for! He was just where you said he’d be. He said he could definitely get you back home, umm... hello?Jade are you here?”

A tingling chill crawled up her spine as she heard her accomplice in escape calling out to her. Feeling the muscles in his back go rock solid, she could already feel his distant attitude. He dragged his lips away from her throat then pushed himself off of her. Standing, he grabbed his shirt from the table next to the bed and began putting it on without saying a single word. For a brief moment all Jade could do was stare at the ceiling caught in a whirlwind of emotions and sensations.

Her body stilled ached to be touched and she could barely concentrate but she could sense her longings were to go unfulfilled. By the way he was acting she assumed he was already on to her little scheme. Embarrassed and unsure why, she sprang quickly from the bed and took the bed sheet with her. Wrapping herself in it and tying it in a knot, sparring not another moment to look back at him she fled into her room and shut the door.

Kern was standing in the middle of the room, dumbfounded when she came in wrapped up in the sheet. At least it was obvious the girl was as innocent as she was naive, so hopefully she would receive no awkward questions from her. Not that she would have the answers to give if she were asked anyway. The girl smiled after a moment and came over to stand in front of her, hopping up and down in her excitement.

“I found the man you asked me to find Jade! It took me a little longer to navigate my way through the city, since its my first time in one. I must say though its not as grand as I expected it to be, actually its kinda of filthy.” She said, wrinkling her nose a little in disdain.

“I don’t think I’ll be needing his services tonight.” Jade said numbly. There was no way that she’d be able to sneak away now that Marion was aware of her treachery. Thinking of him summoned the image of his exquisite body to her mind and she shivered. Sighing in frustration, she tried to push the thoughts away and went about getting the new clothes they’d obtained once reaching the town. Walking behind the room partition, she got dressed in a muddled daze.

“Is something wrong?” Kern asked curiously. Jade appreciated the concern for once but had nothing more to say on what had just transpired. Before she could think of anything to say, a knock at the adjoining door came. Still behind the screen she couldn’t see anything but she heard Marion’s deep voice.

“Get ready. We’re going to go looking for some answers tonight. This is the last place that anyone heard Lairik mention so when need to hurry before the trail grows any more cold than it already has. Meet me downstairs in five minutes.” He shut the door before either one of them could respond.

Dressed, Jade stepped out from behind the screen and looked over at Kern who simply shrugged and smiled carelessly. “How delightful it must be to be so care free” she thought to herself. Deciding not to dally, she walked to the door and opened it about half way when Marion passed by. The look on his face actually made her hesitate, and decide it best to wait until he had gone downstairs and cooled off some before following him.

(Time skip to the desert)

Fifteen minutes later, Jade and Kern descended the stairs and met Marion outside in front of the inn. He still looked broody but at least he wasn’t as angry as she first thought he was, it was either that or he was splendid at masking his feelings.

“Took you two long enough.” He said irritably, rubbing his jaw with its five o’clock shadow. He’d been in such a rush to get outside and away from her that he’d forgotten to shave.

“I’ve asked the inn keeper where the local taverns and such are. We’ll start by looking into these and see if we can’t dig up a little information on Lairik’s location. This is the last place anyone ever heard them travel too, so we need to hurry before the trail grows colder.”

She fought the urge to say that it was fruitless searching for a man who didn’t want to be found. With the little stunt she tried to pull earlier she didn’t want to goad him any further and chance him increasing her work load for the night. It wasn’t her job to be wasting her time like this, yet she was forced to work for him until he decided what he wanted to do with her. Not that she would give him enough to do that, her earlier attempt may have not succeeded but she hadn’t given up on taking advantage of being in the crime riddled Grindalor.

“Alright, let’s go!” Kern said, still full of energy. She could tell the young elven girl was eager to get out and see the world she’d been kept from.

Hours later Jade had gotten her fill and more of the dark, musty bars and dingy alleyways. They’d heard nothing of their target, nor of the men that he’d last been seen with. Leaning against a stone wall with her arms crossed, Jade was beginning to think the waitress they’d gotten the information from had been mistaken. Glancing over to Kern, she watched the girl as she herself curiously watched all the humans walking by on the busy cobbled street. It was like the girl couldn’t soak up enough information at one time.

Jade was thinking of how she detested wasting her time when there was obviously no leads when Marion came out of the gambling hall. She could tell in the back of his mind he was beginning to feel a little doubt over their situation as well. Smirking, she pushed off the wall and pushed an errant strand of hair from her face.

“Nothing yet, huh?” She couldn’t help sounding smug, and it showed in her smile as well. The smile waned though as Marion turned to her with his own on, of triumph. Well so much for suggesting that they head back to their rooms for the night and trying again tomorrow.

“One of the clerks said they saw two of the three we’re looking for, but  Lairik was not with them. They were heading to a tavern a few blocks from here.” Jade stared incredulously at his retreating back as he headed off in presumably the direction of the tavern. With the way things had been going, she hadn’t actually expecting him to find anything here, either.

The two women hurried along to keep pace with him, Kern lost in her own little world as she bounced down the street. Jade on the other, despite being annoyed that she was being dragged around on this ridiculous journey, was glad to have a little lead.

Following closely behind Marion as he spear-headed their group through the crowd, Jade thought to ask. “So I’ve been holding off on asking this for a while, but I can’t seem to come up with any theories of my own. Why is a Divine Knight slumming it down here as a common mercenary?” Even as she emphasized the word common, she knew that he was anything but.

“What?” The question seemed to catch him off guard, and he swiveled around to stare at her.

“I said, why’s a jelwin working as a Tyrithin mercenary, instead of hobnobbing with the the upper crust of Elmiria?”

The longer his gaze lingered on her, she could see the metaphorical shadow pass over them after the surprise of the inquiry had worn off. The hooded expression he’d erected now prevented her from seeing any further clues.

“That is irrelevant to our mission, and none of your damned business anyway. Let

s
get a move on.” Side stepping the question, he turned back and began stalking down the road, making a turn at a busy street corner. Giving a derisive snort, she kept up with him, pushing by some people to walk at his side, not letting go of the subject.

“Touchy subject, is it? Normally with your personality I’d say your mouth pissed somebody high up off, but even I with as much as I hate you can say you’re too much of an asset, so that’s off the list.”

She got nothing but silence from him, but she’d forge on until she hit a nerve. She needed any dirt she could get on him if she was to be free. “You’re arrogant, so it could be you got mad and left when someone was promoted instead of you?” Nothing still.

“Or maybe,” A smirk crossed her lips. “you were caught lifting the skirts of someones daughter and got yourself fi...”

Abruptly and without warning he turned on her so fast he was barely a blur. Grabbing her by the forearm he dragged her unceremoniously into the alley they had just been about to pass. When Kern tried to follow suit with a confused expression, he waved her off.

“Go stand outside.” Raging, cold fury could be heard in his voice, causing the elf girl to pivot on her heels as quick as possible and scramble back to wait on the crowded streets. Jade was only slightly caught off guard, but finding some humor in the situation still. She’d found the nerve she been poking around for.

Turning his icy stare on her now (which surely must be a great feat for someone whose eyes reminded one of fire), he grabbed her other forearm and pushed her back into the damp brick wall behind her. “Hey, no need to get so worked up about it.”

Once he had her against the wall, he planted both of his hands on either side of her shoulders and leaned in. His nose was just inches from her and she felt entirely too crowded now. It was probably best not to let him see how it bothered her, though.

“You would think one would be a little more grateful after saving their life.” He grounded out from behind clenched teeth, clearly trying to hold on to his temper.               Clicking her tongue in annoyance, she fixed him with an equally cool stare.

“I wouldn’t have needed saving if it wasn’t for you in the first place.” She hissed in annoyance.

“Regardless, I realize you abhor my company and let it not go unsaid that I completely feel the same way. But that does not mean we have to be at each other’s throats every blasted, waking moment, so do you think you can just keep that pretty little mouth of yours shut long enough for me to get something done?”

The intensity in his eyes and words certainly did staunch the string of curses she had just been about to release. His admonition about what he thought of her mouth had surprised her. Mentally shaking herself, she steeled herself against the thrumming of her quickening blood and the man who caused it.

“As long as this thing, “ she tilted her chin up, indicating both to the choker and her defiance” is still on me, the way I see it, you’re always at my throat. I find it only fair.”
