The camera paused again, and Angel was in front of it again. This time she’d been crying again, and Chris gripped his hand tighter.

“Now for the shitty part. Tell Dad that I loved him. Very much. He encouraged me when no one else, other than you, would. He kept me sane, too, when I started having the visions. He never knew about them, but he did know that I’d been upset. Keep him close to you, please.” A tissue was handed to her, and she thanked someone off camera. “Chris, I will miss you daily, if not every minute of my afterlife. You were my role model in your strength and focus. I am all I am because of you. Please be happy for me. I need to know that you will be. And if you have a mind to, name one of those beautiful babies you’re going to have after me. Not Angel, that’s a hard name to live up to. And as you know, I went in the opposite direction with that one. But Carolyn would be awesome. I will watch over you and try to keep you safe.”

Chris was sobbing when Angel broke down. Joey had to look away too. It was hard knowing that this woman knew her death was coming and had stopped to reassure her sister. When Angel cleared her throat, they both looked again.

“Joseph Bentley. Yeah, I know about you too. There is so much I could tell you. I could threaten you too, but I won’t. You’re a good man and will make my sister very happy. Or else.” Her laughter bubbled out. “Your family is…will always be there for the two of you. And when you least expect it, things will look brighter than you’ve ever imagined. Oh. I almost forgot. Your brother—I’m sorry, I don’t know his name, as I only know faces—but your brother the doctor is having some major issues right now. He’s broke. I mean, he’s going to move back home and give up his car because he can no longer afford it broke. But all for a good cause. Had I met him before all this, we would have made a good team. His help to the homeless in your town will help so many people if he gets some help. If he asks for help. Are all you Bentley men stubborn?”

“Yes.” Joey kissed Chris on the cheek when she answered her sister. The video stopped at that point and neither of them moved. When Chris looked at him, he knew what she was going to say. “I don’t want to sell her things. Do you think I could make enough money to keep this place running as well as helping out your brother?”

“We can help them both. We will help them both.” She nodded and then they turned when someone called out hello. After spending two hours with Debra Jenkins, they left for their hotel.

Joey was excited to start this new part of his life. The Children’s Place was not just going to be a safe haven here, but where they were too. And after making a few calls, he found that not only was Nolan broke, he was indeed having to move home. The first thing they were going to do when they got back was sit him down and have a long talk about family. Joey was excited about that as well. The Bentleys were kicking ass and taking names, as of right now.

Micah Bentley is a third generation cop and a panther. He always wanted to be a homicide detective like his dad, but kept getting passed up for the job because he was too good at what he currently did working the beat. Micah has a gift, he can read people’s minds. Such a gift could be a help and a hindrance on a job. He could pluck the information he needs right out of someone’s mind, but knowing they’re guilty and proving it are two different things. But when his dad is killed off duty it has him rethinking his career choice.

Regina Webster, Reggie to her friends, is just trying to make ends meet by working three jobs to keep her head above water, and also take care of her invalid brother. She doesn’t have time for socializing with bossy men like Micah Bentley who butt into her life making everything concerning her his business. She doesn’t know anything about this mate thing he keeps spouting off about, she just wants him to leave her alone.

Due to a random act of violence, she finds herself suddenly homeless: no home, no money, no car and suffering from a gunshot wound to boot. Reggie has no choice but to accept a helping hand from the Bentleys at least until she can get back on her feet.

Trouble has Reggie marked, and this time they take Micah’s mom too. Micah knows they’re in trouble, but when the bad guys don’t go where they’re expected it’s a race against the clock…
