Layyah

Courtney was going to make Bishop’s plan a lot easier than I thought. I decided to stop by his crib when I left the café. When I let myself in with the key he’d given me, I heard him in his bedroom talking to a female. As I laid my ear against the door, I could tell that it was Bishop’s ex, Ashley. Surprised that they knew each other, I listened in on their conversation.

“Are you sure this shit gone work, Courtney?” Ashley asked him.

“Yes, I’m sure Ashley, long as you do exactly what I tell you to. By the time this is over, I’ll have my Kai back and Bishop will be out the way.”

“What you mean he’ll be out of the way? You mean he’ll be with me, right? That’s the only reason I agreed to this, Courtney because you said you wouldn’t kill him and I’d have him back. If you plan on trying to kill him…”

“Mane, shut that shit up. I’m not going to kill his bitch ass. I said I wasn’t, didn’t I? Long as you get his ass out of Memphis and away from Kai, I won’t have to. Now, are you sure this nigga won’t have any other reason to believe he isn’t the father of your son?”

“I mean… he shouldn’t… When he got locked up, he was the only nigga I was really fucking with. I messed off from time to time when he’d ignore me, but I’m sure Ashton is Bishop’s son. I found out I was pregnant the night he left. I was going to tell him, but I didn’t want him to carry that weight with him the whole time he was doing his time. I didn’t want him to feel bad about not being able to be with his son. So, I didn’t tell him. When he got out, I sent Ashton to stay with my mother until I had the chance to tell Bishop about him, but with Kai’s ass being around I haven’t had the chance to.”

“Where your mama stay?”

“Miami, but he has to be back by August for school or I have to move there and get him registered.”

“So, I have a month to pull this off is what you saying?”

Ashley was quiet.

“Aight. Well, you need to get your part going and I’ll take care of mine.”

I heard feet moving towards the door so I tried to sprint towards the front door before they opened it, but before I could make it, I heard Courtney calling my name.

“Layyah? Wrong fucking time to be snooping, baby girl,” he said with a smile before running towards me.

I’d made it outside, but even with a limp, he was too fast. He grabbed me and dragged my screaming ass back into his home. I had to get away and let Bishop know what Courtney’s ass was up to, but that wasn’t going to happen soon when I saw the brass knuckles on Ashley’s fingers.

“I guess since I can’t beat your best friend’s ass, I’ll take my frustrations out on you,” Ashley said before hitting me with the knuckles, knocking my ass out instantly.
