I laughed. “Yeah, probably. But you aren’t going to snitch on me, are you?”

“Not if you leave me the fuck alone, starting… now.”

“I gotcha. No problem, man. Sorry to bug you.”

I smiled to myself.

The door opened.

The kid stepped out.

As I saw that kid walk away angry, attitude in his step, I saw myself in him. Saw myself back then, pissed off, young, shattered. The elevator closed shut and I looked at the reflection staring back at me from the mirrored doors.

It was that kid again.

No. I shook it off. I looked again. I saw the real me looking back. That big wound had sutured up. It had healed. All the pain was gone. I was whole. I wasn’t all broken and bad like the last time I’d stood here staring at myself, wondering what I’d become. But then, maybe I hadn’t been so broken. Maybe I wasn’t such a bad kid back then after all. If I was, how had I turned into what I was looking at now? A good guy.

A good guy, that’s what I’d become.
