Andrew was born in 1894, and his wife, in 1902. They settled in Bessemer, Pennsylvania, where Mr. Vrabel and his sons all worked in the same plant. The Vrabels had three boys and three girls. Mrs. Vrabel enjoyed sewing and knitting and was, her eighty-two-year-old son recalls, a “staunch Democrat.” Mr. Vrabel died in 1980, and his wife died thirteen years later.

Wade, Mr. and Mrs. Aubrey

The Wade family had a small farm and raised tobacco, corn, and cows. There were six children—four boys and two girls. Mrs. Aubrey Wade attended Normal School and emphasized to her children the importance of good penmanship. The Wades’ daughter Brenda W. Perdue actually wrote the condolence letter for her mother.

Watson, S/Sgt. and Mrs. William B., Jr.

William B. Watson was killed in Vietnam at An Khe on February 23, 1966, just after his twins’ second birthday. Mrs. Watson raised the Watsons’ four children on her own, returning to school and working her way through college. She is now retired and lives in New York. The twins live in the South.

Weir, Russell

Mr. Weir felt terrible to the end of his days about what happened to John F. Kennedy. He expressed concern that so few young people seemed to have a keen awareness of the history of this country. He died only recently.

Wentworth, Marcy

Marcy Wentworth writes: “The events in Dallas in 1963 were the defining moment that changed me from a naive schoolgirl into a focused and earnest adult, intent on living my ideals. I completed my university degrees and continue to pursue a lifelong career as teacher and reading specialist. After much travel, I again reside in Austin, Texas, with my geographer husband, near our children and grandchildren.”

Whitt, Draper, Lucille, Nelson, and Steve

Draper Whitt was a veteran of WWII who was left disabled outside of France (a bullet entered the base of his skull and exited his ear). Despite his disability, he held
down several jobs prior to his death in 1972. He moved from North Carolina to Virginia after the war to be closer to outpatient treatments for his war injuries. He was a strong advocate for disabled veterans, volunteering at the VA hospital.

Wiggs, Kenneth R., Jr.

Kenneth Wiggs writes: “At the time I wrote this letter I was being trained to work on electronic military fighter aircraft. I stayed for my full four-year term in the military. I also served in Vietnam during this time. After leaving the service, I worked for General Dynamics in Fort Worth, Texas, for about three and a half years before moving into flight simulation for American Airlines. I worked there until I retired in 2002. I still think that Jackie Kennedy is one of the finest women to ever be a First Lady of our nation. She showed a great deal of class and fortitude in her life. She also raised some very fine children to carry the Kennedy name…. For a young lady to be thrown into history so violently, she persevered very well and showed how dynamic she could be in her and America’s troubled times…. The letter was from the heart of a very anguished airman who was seeing a very troubled part [of] history in our country unfold.”

Wildesen, Dora A.

Dora Wildesen was born in 1890 in West Virginia. She married and lived on a farm in Maryland for nearly sixty years. She and her husband had one son. Mrs. Wildesen was a housewife and took care of the animals, including hens, sheep, and calves. Her grandson recalls that she was a fantastic bread maker. Every day, at every meal, they would have some sort of hot baked good—bread, rolls, cake, etc. He also remembers helping to take care of the sheep in the summertime in their mountain pasture. His grandmother would make him a sandwich, give him a bottle of water, and he would go off on the pony into the mountain for hours—“it was such a different time then.” Their closest neighbor lived a mile away. One of her grandson’s early memories is of his grandmother rocking him for hours in a wooden chair. Dora Wildesen died in October 1977.

Wiley, Mrs. John

Mrs. John C. Wiley lived and worked in Washington, D.C., after 1963. She remarried and moved to New England with her husband, a physician. They raised three children and now have four grandchildren. Patricia Parks Wiley Kelleher has worked for a hospice program and as a director of a preschool. “Looking back over these years,” she writes, “I am filled with gratitude.”

Williams, Mrs. Bessie

Bessie Williams’s son writes that his mother “was a widow and mother of fifteen children who worked as a domestic laborer most of her life, was able to purchase a home in
1971 with a whopping $845 down payment. She passed away in 1983.” Her son now owns and lives in this property. Bessie, he concludes, “was truly a ‘child of God’!!”

Williams, Ethel C.

Ethel Chavis Williams was born in rural Columbia, South Carolina, in 1920. She completed fifth grade and then continued her education on her own. She moved to Detroit in 1948. She retired from the Detroit Board of Education food services in 1980. She currently lives in senior housing a few blocks from the Messiah Church where she taught and mentored hundreds of children, sang in the choir, welcomed Vietnamese refugees, and hand-addressed thousands of communications to college students and others around the globe. She wrote a poem in 1964 that recollected her 1962 encounter with John F. Kennedy. She told a friend that “returning from day labor she requested to be dropped off near the intersection of Michigan Avenue and West Grand Boulevard, where she surmised the Presidential motorcade would pass. She was highly excited and greatly bemused that she was the only one there. She recalls the cars approaching so very slowly and her amazement at finding herself within five feet of the President. Then I just walked on home, she declares with an open arm shrug.” In her poem “Five Feet of Space in an Instant of Time,” she expresses her joy at seeing President Kennedy and her regret that she never got to shake his hand. The poem concludes: “But if GOD, whose abode, is in Heaven, Let me cross the Great Divide. I shall find J. F. K. and say to him, Thanks for giving me back my pride. His light has not, gone out in the world, It burns bright, in The Eternal Flame, So that in, generations to come, All shall remember his name. John Fitzgerald Kennedy, Upon whose shoulders, all of our hopes were borne, So long, goodbye, and GOD bless you, A good journey, fare well, and welcome home.” Mrs. Williams is eighty-nine years old.

Wise, Blanche

Blanche Wise was born in 1891. She and her husband raised nine children in Enon, Pennsylvania. She died in September 1978, at the age of eighty-six.

Wise, Joyce

Joyce Wise lives in Pennsylvania.

Wofford, Harris

Born in 1926, Harris Wofford graduated from the University of Chicago, Yale, and Howard University Law School. A veteran of World War II, he supported the civil rights movement and was an attorney for the U.S. Civil Rights Commission in the late 1950s. He was a central figure in the Kennedy administration’s civil rights policy group, serving as a special assistant to the President. He helped to form the Peace Corps and served as its associate director from 1962 to 1966. He was president of the College at Old Westbury from 1966 to 1970 and of Bryn Mawr College
from 1970 to 1978. He served in the U.S. Senate from 1991 to 1995. He currently resides in Washington, D.C.

Wood, Robert L.

Mr. Wood was a longtime officer of the Eastern Star fraternal organization. He belonged to the Methodist church in Dallas. He died in 2000.

Woodrick, Mrs. Riley

Mrs. Woodrick had one daughter. Her nephew recalls that his aunt “was always writing letters to governors and all kinds of people.” She had a high school education. She and her husband were farmers. Mrs. Woodrick died in 1982.

Wysota, George

George Wysota lives on Long Island. He has been married for over twenty years and has a daughter who is almost sixteen. He started his own pool business. He notes that he was profoundly moved by the Kennedys and followed the family’s activities for years.

Young, Monroe, Jr.

Monroe Young attended college for two years, married, and had two children. His daughter is a schoolteacher and his son is a barber. Monroe died in September 1990 in Dallas at the age of thirty-four.

Zarnowitz, Jill

Jill Zarnowitz graduated from the University of Washington, where she earned a degree in wildlife science. She and her husband now own the Stag Hollow vineyard and winery and live in northwest Oregon. She remembers that she was in the sixth grade when President Kennedy was assassinated and comments that “his and Jackie Kennedy’s lives touched me deeply.” She became involved in the civil rights movement “in part as a result of President Kennedy’s policies.”

Zemeski, Robert W.

Robert Walter Zemeski was born in 1945 and grew up in Burlington, New Jersey. After graduating from high school, he joined the Marines in 1963. He received an honorable discharge a year later. He attended Hyles Anderson Bible College in Indiana and earned advanced seminary degrees. He and his wife have four children and nine grandchildren. He has served as a Baptist missionary pastor and has started churches in Ireland since 1979.

Zepp, Fred R.

Fred Zepp was a writer, and his son recalls that his father was not a supporter of President Kennedy’s. He remembers calling home the night of November 22 “specifically to speak to my father in search of comfort and reassurance, only to find that I was totally unable to speak to him—all I could do was cry for us all. I shall always
wonder now if my call had any influence on my father’s most kind words to Mrs. Kennedy.” Mr. Zepp died in 1994.

Zimmerman, Elisabeth

Elisabeth Zimmerman taught English and history before retiring. She has always enjoyed, she writes, “literature and writing” and is considering writing a children’s book. She is married and has two sons and six grandsons. She vividly recalls writing as a twelve-year-old to Mrs. Kennedy.

Zinn, Mr. and Mrs. Tempest C.

After writing to Mrs. Kennedy, Nellie Zinn continued living with her husband on a farm in Stewartsville until her failing health forced her into a home. She died at the age of ninety.
