Casey’s dark eyes lit like two candles and she broke into a face-splitting grin that Damian knew he’d never forget.

Miles pulled back, tears on his cheeks, but no longer crying. “You’re getting married?”

“If Mom agrees.” He rubbed Casey’s shoulder and prayed.

“I agree,” Casey said, and he could hear her voice trembling, “as long as it lasts forever.”

“Yes!” Miles said, excitedly, his fist waving in the air. “Awesome!”

Damian felt a sudden calmness and contentment that he’d never experienced before. He knew, with every fiber in his being, that it
would
last forever. “You and Mom couldn’t get rid of me now if you put me into a cannon and fired it.”

Miles giggled. “Yes, we could. That would work, Dad.”

“It would.” Casey laughed and stretched her arms to fit around both Damian and her son. “But I have no desire to get rid of Daddy.”

Miles broke into a smile that matched his mother’s and, with his short arms, tried to hug both of them, as Casey had done. He turned his head toward Damian, breathing into his neck. “I thought you were leaving us,” he said, suddenly choked up. “Everything is better with you here.”

“I’m never leaving again,” Damian said, taking his arm from Casey to grab Miles with both arms. He watched Casey wipe a tear from her eye.

“I love you, Daddy,” Miles said for the very first time.

Damian took in a deep breath and tried to ignore the stinging at the corners of his eyes. He happened to glance up at Sam, standing by the door with crossed arms. His brother winked at him. Damian paused, and then winked back.

Damian’s attention focused back on Miles. As he stroked the back of the boy’s head, he spoke soothingly into his soft hair. “I love you too, Miles. And I’m going to dedicate the rest of my life to showing you and your mother just how much I love both of you.” He shot a look at Casey and she smiled at him. “You two can count on it.”

One year to the day of Damian’s proposal, in a wedding that included most of the town, Damian and Casey became husband and wife. Miles was the ring bearer. Alex was best man. Casey’s sister, Jamie, was the bridesmaid.

As Damian and Casey kissed after being proclaimed man and wife, Damian slid his hand to her belly. Their second child would be born in seven months, a baby girl this time.

Life was good and only beginning.

The End
