Alex planted her hands on her hips and stared him down. “What do you want?”
The expression on her face must have been pretty murderous because he cringed—which she only felt a little guilty about. Marek was her friend, but he was being a first-rate nincompoop at the moment.
“You drugged the guards.” He moved slowly toward her, as though afraid that any sudden movement would set her off.
“You might as well put your hands where I can see them, Marek,” she told him. “I can hear the lightning buzzing off your fingertips.”
The subtle hum of magic stopped, but the scent of burning dust lingered in the air. Marek swung his hands around and folded them together.
“You’re needed upstairs,” he said.
“I’m busy,” she replied, turning her back on him.
“
Both
of you are needed upstairs.”
She spun back around. “You’re letting Logan go?”
“Yes,” he said as the cell door clicked open.
“Why?” Logan stepped up behind Alex. “I’m a threat.”
“You are,” Marek agreed. “But we’re facing an even greater threat. We need your help.”
“My family.” Logan’s voice scraped like sliding gravel. “They’ve made their next move.”
“Yes,” Marek said. “They’ve tested the Blood Orb on a small group of vampires.” He cleared his throat. “In London.”
Alex’s heart stuttered. “What happened?”
“The vampires ripped apart a twelve-year-old girl. A mage.” His magic oozed agony. “Let’s go. We need to figure out how to stop them before they strike again.”
Then he turned and walked toward the steps.
“Logan?” Alex said as he stalked off after Marek.
“Yes?” he replied in a low growl.
She kept pace beside him. “We’re going to stop the Convictionites.”
“Yes.”
“And if they try to control you, I will break their spell,” she promised. “No matter what they throw at us, we will get through it. Together.”
She reached toward him. He stared at her hand for a moment, then took it, giving it a squeeze.
“Yes,” he said. “Yes, we will.”

About the Author
Ella Summers has been writing stories for as long as she could read; she's been coming up with tall tales even longer than that. One of her early year masterpieces was a story about a pigtailed princess and her dragon sidekick. Nowadays, she still writes fantasy. She likes books with lots of action, adventure, and romance. When she is not busy writing or spending time with her two young children, she makes the world safe by fighting robots.
Originally from the U.S., Ella currently resides in Switzerland. She is the author of the epic fantasy series
Sorcery and Science
and the urban fantasy series
Dragon Born.
