Ty had read basketball great Bill Russell’s book when he was a kid and couldn’t read enough sports books. He was surprised when Russell said some great players did not want the ball at end of the game. In the time-out before the final shot, they would make themselves scarce, sending the coach the message:

Ty scrubbed in, strode into the OR, adjusted the loupes over his eyes, and turned to the scrub nurse: “Scalpel.”
