I've never written a book before. I tend to buy between 50 and 100 books a year off Amazon. A lot of them just mediocre books but I still enjoy them, and after a while I thought I could write one of these! I started writing several times. When I’ve gotten to around 30,000 words or so, I tended to fizzle out and stop. Maybe it was fear of rejection, I thought. Could I write a good enough book to satisfy myself never mind the public or whoever may purchase it. Then I was just too busy with work and children. This particular book which I have finished, started out because I came down with the flu, and I did not win the 1.5 billion dollars Lottery! So there I was bored. I decided to give it another go. After a week and a half I was already passed my stopping point from before and I had the rest of the book pretty much outlined. This gave me the confidence along with my wife’s encouragement to finish this book, get a cover made and sign up for Kindle self-publishing. Now I'm already writing the second book with a will. I'm not sure how this will be received, people have gotten a glimpse of it have given me positive feedback. Infected Moosehill Militia Book 1, is a fictional story of course but all the locations are real and even some of the characters may, or may not, be modeled after people I know! As I am starting my second career as a part-time fictional writer I hope you enjoy the story because I plan on keep writing Book 2 and book 3 and so on. I may go back now and continue those other books that I started. Enjoy the read and if you have time leave a review.
Prologue
Today was particularly hard on Mike, His daughter of one year was with family, and Mike sat next to his wife’s bed, holding her hand. She found out six months ago that she had a form of inoperable Brain Cancer. After the initial anger, you have to ask yourself why me, when that idiot down the street will get to be a hundred.
Amy his wife, being a strong determined person her whole life, stopped feeling sorry for herself and dragged Mike out of that depression too. She decided they had to live. So they packed up their jeep and drove cross country with baby Mary in a car seat. They stopped at the Grand Canyon and marveled at its majesty, they traveled across the desert into Las Vegas and stayed in Las Vegas for a night. Mike drove them over Hoover Dam and then to the Pacific Ocean in San Diego, showing Amy where he survived Hell Week. They visited some cousins and moved on up the Pacific coast highway enjoying the time together with baby Mary all the way into San Francisco and parts north. Amy particularly loved the Redwoods.
While in Seattle Amy started to feel ill. After three months of touring the country, Amy’s illness caught up with them. They flew home to Massachusetts the next day.
Here they were at the end. “Mike, I’m not doing so well today. I need you to promise me you’ll do everything in your power to protect our daughter. Promise me.” She whispered.
“Easy baby, no need to strain yourself. Mary will be fine. I’ll take care of her.” He told her.
“No, you need to promise me you will!” she said with whatever strength she still possessed.
“Yes, darling I will. I promise nothing will hurt Mary.” He told her. She smiled and laid back resting. An hour later Amy Mohan was dead. She never woke up again.
Three days later the wake and funeral was well attended. Mike and Mary had a lot of friends and acquaintances It was a Irish funeral, drinks flowed stories were told of Amy and what a wonderfully person she was. Two weeks later, with family watching Mary, Mike a decorated Navy Seal went back to work at the Police Department. Except for Mary, Mike didn’t let himself smile again for a long time.
