She heard the soft clatter of hooves on the stone walk
outside. Her heartbeat quickened and she sat up. Someone tapped on her door and
she smiled and leapt out of bed.

Gayle stood near her door and took a moment to compose
herself. Yes she could scarcely wait to see Pace but she didn’t want to appear
overanxious.

“Gayle?” he called from outside. “Are you awake?”

She chuckled. If she hadn’t been, she would be now.

Still smiling, she opened the door and they embraced.

“I’m sorry I’m late,” he said.

“It’s all right. Come in. Have you eaten?”

He stepped inside and slid an arm around her. Cupping her
cheek in his hand, he gazed into her eyes. She noted he smelled fresh and his
body felt cool despite the warm summer night. He had obviously bathed in the
river.

“I’ve been hungry for you all day,” he said and kissed her.

He swept her into his arms and Gayle laughed softly and
clung to his neck.

“I missed you so much today,” she said.

“You too.”

Nuzzling his neck, she asked, “How are the repairs going?”

“Very well.” He carried her to the bed and placed her upon
it.

He yawned and stretched his arms overhead. The sleek muscles
in his torso rippled and Gayle admired him, her heartbeat quickening. She
wanted to touch him so badly.

Pace closed his eyes and shuddered. The floor trembled as he
shifted to Huform. Within seconds he stood in front of her on his two long,
well-muscled legs. While he recovered from the brief weakness that followed
shapeshifting, Gayle slid off the bed and caressed his flat stomach. She licked
the ridges of muscle then used the tip of her tongue to trace above the thatch
of dark blond hair covering his groin. Kneeling in front of him, she clasped
his cock and breathed lightly on the head.

“Ah, Gayle,” he murmured, caressing her hair.

“It’s been a long day,” she said softly. One hand stroked
his velvet-skinned cock while her other kneaded his balls. Her lips hovered
over the tip of his erection. “You must be tired.”

“I thought I was,” he breathed. The muscles in his legs
tightened and when she tilted her gaze toward his, his blue eyes smoldered. The
tip of his tongue moistened his chiseled lips and she couldn’t resist smiling.

She took his cock head into her mouth and rolled her wet
tongue over it, exploring him carefully.

Pace groaned and his fingers tightened a bit in her hair.
Pleasuring him aroused her. She enjoyed making him feel good and she loved the
way his body tensed and his breathing quickened. Most of all she relished the
feel of his thick, satiny cock against her lips and tongue.

Her enthusiastic licking and sucking made him swell even
more and soon he thrust his hips, the movement obviously restrained, as if he
didn’t want to hurt her.

“You better stop,” he panted. His powerful body trembled and
he arched his neck back. “I don’t think I can take much more.”

Gayle moaned softly, unable to reply in words since his
gorgeous cock filled her mouth. She sucked harder and deeper until his cock
head brushed the back of her throat, then she held the bulbous tip between her
lips and flicked her tongue along the underside.

Grunting, he stepped away from her, grasped her beneath the
arms and lifted her onto the bed. He pushed up her nightgown but instead of
filling her quickly to take his pleasure, he caressed her soft mound. He slid a
finger inside her and groaned.

“You’re so wet.”

“Of course. Don’t you know how arousing it is to lick you?”

“Oh, Gayle,” he said, his gaze burning into hers.

His body covered hers and he braced a hand on either side of
her head.

A soft moan escaped her and she caressed his powerful chest.
The tip of his cock rested against her slick entrance and he slowly filled her
with his long, thick erection.

“Pace, I want you so much. I need you so badly. All day I
haven’t thought of anything except you.”

“My beautiful Gayle.” He kissed her deeply.

His hot, wet tongue thrust into her mouth to the same rhythm
as his thick cock pumped into her quivering body. Wrapping her legs around him,
she lifted her hips to meet his. Soon he thrust so masterfully that she could
only cling to him and moan with pleasure.

“Please, oh please,” she breathed, tingling all over. Her
clit ached and her pussy clamped around him.

He whispered her name, his voice husky, and lowered his
weight onto his forearms so he could kiss her deeply. Their tongues danced and
their pelvises ground together in a primitive rhythm.

Pace cupped one of her breasts with a trembling hand and
kneaded it gently. His thumb swept her stiff nipple and she gasped.

The pleasure was almost too much to bear. A few more quick
thrusts and she came long and hard.

Her drenched pussy throbbed around him, driving him over the
edge. Tearing his mouth from hers, he gasped and moaned. His every muscle
tensed and he strained into her, filling her pussy with his come and her heart
with the passionate love of destined mates.

Finally he rolled onto his side, pulling her closer to his
warm, relaxed body.

“Love,” he breathed against her hair.

“Love,” she whispered and kissed his chest before tumbling
into a contented sleep.

Two weeks later, the tack shop and armory were back in
business. Pace continued with repairs, but the main buildings had been restored
and the craftsmen filled orders on a regular basis.

Just before closing time one evening, Pace arrived at
Gayle’s shop as he did regularly. This time he wore an especially brilliant
smile.

She glanced at him from the round wooden table where she had
been crushing herbs with a mortar and pestle.

“I have something for you,” he said and approached, his
hoofs thumping the floor. He held out a black silk pouch tied with a fine gold
ribbon.

Gayle smiled and wiped her hands on her apron. “What is it?”

“Open it.”

She took the pouch, unfastened the ribbon and reached
inside. Her heart fluttered at the sight of the lovely gold band embellished
with alternating rubies and emeralds. Pace took it from her and slid it onto
her finger.

“To make our engagement official,” he said.

Gayle hugged him tightly, then held out her hand to admire
the ring.

“Thank you.” She lifted her gaze to his. “All we need now is
a date.”

“Whenever you want.”

“I wonder if the village chieftain is available?”

His eyes widened. “You mean tonight?”

“Yes tonight. Unless it’s too soon?”

Laughing, he swept her into his arms. “Love, I was ready the
day after our first shared dream.”

“So was I.” She clung to his neck and kissed his cheek.

“No you weren’t. You still thought I was the mountain ogre.”

“Because you didn’t tell me the truth.”

“You wouldn’t let me get a word in edgewise.”

She raised an eyebrow. “As if anyone can stop you from doing
or saying something when you
really
want to.”

He laughed and carried her out of the shop.

“Put me down. I can’t argue with an oversized Horseman
toting me around like a sack of Rock Blood.”

“Really? Then I have no intention of putting you down. I’m
carrying you straight to the chieftain’s house before you change your mind
about marrying me.”

For a few seconds she stared at him, speechless. How could
she remain angry while gazing into his sparkling blue eyes?

Shaking her head, she smiled. “I don’t know how you do it
but I can’t seem to stay mad at you.”

The expression in his eyes softened even more and he kissed
her again. By the time their lips parted, she felt nothing but warmth and love.

Sometimes he riled her but she knew why her anger never
lasted. Not only were their arguments rarely serious but unlike her father,
Pace never reacted violently toward her. He was as different from the man who
raised her as two people could be.

“I love you,” she said, gazing into his eyes.

“I love you too, Gayle.”

He carried her through Fernwood square. They scarcely
noticed nor did they care about the curious looks from the villagers. Passing
by Brayden’s home, they asked the brown-coated Horsemen to fly to the mountain
and tell Ardin to meet them at the chieftain’s house.

Atop the green hill at the edge of the square, they knocked
on the door of the stone longhouse. The chieftain’s wife invited them inside. With
flowers from her personal garden, she helped Gayle weave wedding wreaths to
adorn the heads of the bride and groom. By the time they finished, Ardin had
arrived. He and the chieftain’s wife stood witness to the brief ceremony.

“I wish you both many years of happiness together,” Ardin
said to the newly wedded couple.

“We’re glad you could be here,” Gayle said and kissed the
older Horseman’s scruffy cheek.

Pace and Ardin embraced tightly.

“Bring your lady home,” Ardin told him.

“Come celebrate with us,” Gayle said.

“I think you’d prefer to celebrate alone, lass.” Ardin
winked. “I’m going to stop at the tavern for some ale. See you in the morning.”

After thanking the chieftain and his wife, Pace and Gayle
left their house. Outside he knelt in the lush grass and she slid onto his
back, relishing his warmth and hardness between her legs. Soon she’d feel
another part of him, even warmer and harder, deep inside her. Her heartbeat
quickened and she slid her arms around him. Pressing her cheek to his back, she
closed her eyes and inhaled deeply, enjoying his scent. She kissed between his
shoulder blades and the muscles rippled beneath her lips.

“Ready?” he asked, his voice rough with longing. She knew
exactly how he felt.

“More than ready.” She caressed his hair-dusted chest. “Take
me home.”

He cantered down the hill then his long legs stretched into
a full gallop across the empty field outside the village square. His wings
opened and he ascended.

Wind whipped around them but his powerful body protected her
from the brunt of it. She loved the feel of his muscles coiling and releasing
as his legs churned beneath him.

Almost too quickly the flight ended, but soon she would soar
again, this time in the comfort of their bed.

Pace landed but she didn’t dismount until he paused in front
of his house. No sooner had she dropped to her feet than he picked her up
again, this time in his human arms.

He carried her over the threshold and she teased, “Does this
make me queen of the mountain?”

“Queen of my heart,” he said in a husky whisper.

“Even better.” She tightened her grip around the neck of her
beautiful stallion and surrendered to his tender, passionate kiss.
