“Sophia? What the fuck is going on here?” I asked.

“Sophia has decided that she wants more than just the allowance we’ve been giving her to keep our secret quiet,” Janet said crossing her arms and giving Sophia an ugly glare. Janet hated the bitch too for obvious reasons.

“And what is that?” I asked.

“You,” Sophia answered as she came toward me with her long elegant legs in strappy gold heels.

“What? What is that supposed to mean?” I asked.

“I want us to date, like old time my darling Jaysun. You are now mine.”

“Fuck that, and fuck you. I’m not a toy,” I said enraged by what she was saying.

“I told you he would not be okay with this Janet. So I will go now and you two will see your names on the cover of tomorrow’s newspapers and bye-bye business.”

“No, that’s not necessary. Jaysun will do it,” Janet said.

“Like hell I will! I’m getting the fuck out of here!”

“It’s is just for a few weeks and it’s only in public,” Janet said.

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“I have not been getting as many modeling gigs as I had before. I need you to refresh my name. Going to public events on your arm will make me a celebrity as it did before. My name and our picture will be all over the place again, and with celebrity comes the better modeling gigs,” Sophia said sitting on the couch very satisfied with her plan.

“And if I don’t you are going to expose us,” I said sighing in defeat.

“Exactly.”

“It’s just for a couple of weeks Jaysun. You are the face of this company, go out there and be the face in public,” Janet said. “Besides, this one,” she pointed to Sophia, “is your mess. You have to clean it up and manage it.”

She was right. I was the one that got us into this in the first place. I was not happy about it, but it was true.

“Fine, I’ll be your face, but nothing else. This isn’t real Sophia so don’t think I’m going to touch your evil ass. This is for your celebrity only. Understood?”

“Yes, of course my darling Jaysun,” she said smiling.

I angrily grabbed the tuxedo and put it on. A half-hour later we were walking the red carpet arm and arm. I smiled for the cameras and faked it as best as I could as Sophia told lies to the reporters asking about our relationships. I hated every second of it. I thought about Kendra the entire time. I needed to call her and explain what was going on. It was important that she knew this was not my idea. As soon as I found a quiet spot I would give her a call. I entered the gala with Sophia on my arm. It was your typical expensive and fancy five grand per seat at a round table full of other pretentious bull shitters. I wasn’t looking forward to it, and I thought about how cool it’s going to be to have a girl that would be working in the outdoors with animals, away from scenes like this. It was ideal. I sat with Sophia as she made conversation with everyone, getting the word out that she was there with me, the famous billionaire playboy Jaysun Rubic. It worked. I overheard a few people saying, “I’ll call your agent to make arrangements.” Suddenly everyone wanted a piece of Sophia except for me. I just wanted her gone.

KENDRA

I was feeling happy over everything that had happened so far. I finally felt like Jaysun had not only revealed that he loved me but walls had come tumbling down between us, and that was a big deal. I was no longer just the sex toy of this billionaire playboy that made me feel hot just by looking at him. No, I was more than that. I could feel the difference, and it felt good. On top of all that had now been revealed with Jaysun, and him trusting me with his secret, he had talked about our future together. He was going to send me to the University of my Choice. Even though I did have enough saved up to fly to Hawaii and get a new apartment, I really didn’t have enough for tuition. I would have to rely on scholarships and loans, so his offer was a big deal to me. The fact that I now knew exactly what I wanted to do with my life was also a big leap. Now that the summer was almost over it was perfect timing. Maybe I would be able to do a winter quarter at the university? I thought as I settled into my bed and made myself nice and cozy with a cup of tea and flicked on the television. I enjoyed watching entertainment television before I went to bed. I flicked on my favorite celebrity gossip show and fluffed my pillows to settle in for the night. If Jaysun came back tonight, I would be able to hear the buzzer go off because it was very loud. I drank my hot mint tea and smiled at how great things were suddenly going. Then the voice on the television caught my attention as the reporter on the red carpet of a gala said, “And there is supermodel Sophia Pepperidge on the arm of tech billionaire Jaysun Rubic of the Plaerus Company. Now we know this couple has dated in the past and it looks like they have rekindled that flame. And we can’t blame him look at that dress. Let’s see if we can get a word in with the gorgeous couple.”

My mouth dropped open and I dropped my cup of hot tea on my lap. “Ouch fuck!” I jumped up and out of bed as I wiped the hot tea off of me. I walked closer to the television in disbelief.

“Yes, I’m wearing a Vera Wang, Jaysun here picked it out for me,” Sophia said to the reporter as she put her arm through Jaysun’s. He smiled and nodded yes.

“Oh Vera Wang, famous for her wedding dresses. Maybe Mr. Rubic is trying to tell you something,” the reporter said.

“Let’s hope so,” Sophia said with a wink. Then they walked off, together. I nearly threw up as I crumpled to the floor. What the fuck was that? Did I truly just see that? Was this real life? I was seeing the man I was just being intimate with and had declared his love for me on the arm of a famous supermodel on television. That’s why he left? To go be with her! “Fuck! Fuck! Kendra you are so stupid. You fell for his bullshit again!” I yelled at myself. The unbelievable prick! He had a way with making me believe him. He was so damn smooth. He said exactly what I wanted to hear. He told me he loved me, which is what every girl waits to hear so it wasn’t hard for him to figure that out. He shared a secret with me, making me feel like we were close and that we were in this together. Then he offered to give me a giant gift of making my dreams come true by paying for my university. I was such an idiot. These were all classic playboy things to do. I fell for all of them. That was it. This had to end. I was over it. I was not going into work anymore, and I was going to leave this place as soon as I could. Being in the same city as Jaysun would guarantee that I went back into his arms. He just had this hold over me. Then the tears started to roll down my face. I felt dumb and heartbroken rolled into one. I cried myself to sleep. In the middle of the night I woke up and looked at my phone. I had several texts from Jaysun and a few missed phone calls. I deleted all of them. There was no point in hearing his ridiculous excuses. I never wanted to see him again. From now on I was going to focus on myself. Those words echoed through my head and sounded very familiar. I had said them before. So out of anger I grabbed my laptop. I booked a ticket to Hawaii for that night. There! Now, I had to go. I was serious. I could at least go to check out the programs and where to live. It would be a preparation trip before the real move. This way it would at least get me out of the city. Maybe it was irrational, but it felt right. I grabbed my bags and packed. Then I was ready and on my way to the airport. I was exhausted but I would sleep on the plane. I just needed to get out of the city as soon as I could. I sent my new friend Blake at the museum an email asking if he knew anyone I could meet with in Hawaii that could give me some advice or guidance on my chosen career. Then I turned my phone off and a few hours later boarded the plane. I was on my way to a clean start.

JAYSUN

I was pissed off that I had been pulled into this. I was in the middle of a meeting with my private detective to figure out how to get out of this hold Sophia had on me. I kept looking at my phone realizing that I had not heard back from Kendra. I wasn’t worried, I’m sure that I would see her once I got to the office. For now I needed to deal with this.

“Have you thought about talking your way out of it? I can’t find anything dirty on Sophia other than that she’s blackmailing you,” the private detective said.

“So why not use that against her. Tell her that if she exposes you, than it will expose her in return. She’s so concerned with celebrity, something like this would not only ruin her, but you would also stop paying her. With the absence of modeling work and no more allowance from you she would be in debt in no time. I say use this information against her. Scare the shit out of her. She’ll get the picture.”

“That’s a good point. I should have thought of that last night, but I was caught off guard.”

I picked up the phone and called Janet, because she did after all have authority over me. I told her the latest and how I would deal with it. She approved my negotiating skills and just said, “Do it. I can’t deal with that bitch. That is your mess. Make it go away. I have a billion dollar empire to run.”

I hung up the phone feeling good once more. I felt relieved. I knew Sophia enough from our brief dating days to know that this would work on her. She wasn’t that smart after all, she just got lucky one day when she eavesdropped on a phone call I was having with Janet. That’s how she learned our secret and then as soon as I broke it off with her, she used it against me. Now I would head to the office and find Kendra. I felt like something was wrong because she usually answered my text. Maybe it was possible she slept in late, or her alarm did not go off. Those things did happen. I tried not to worry too much about it, but I knew in my gut that something was off. I felt connected enough to her to feel a shift in our relationship, but maybe that was just my imagination. I checked the kitchen on my floor and the client services area looking for her, but she was nowhere to be found. I finally decided I would just have her sent to me. I went into my office and took care of a few business emails and messages and then I was ready to see Kendra. I looked forward to it. I thought about how she asked me to make love to her and how we did not get a chance to finish. I felt my body responding and I was getting hard just thinking about how I would now have the chance to finish her request. I could take her into my office apartment for a few hours. Smiling as I thought of her naked on my bed, I hit the intercom, “Mrs. Stryker could you please send Kendra up to my office.”

“Kendra not here sir. She sent me an email resigning her position. I can send another client services person up to your office in a matter of minutes.”

I was frozen. What the fuck! What the hell was going on here?

“Mr. Rubic sir?”

“Sorry about that. No that won’t be necessary, thank you.”

I pushed off the intercom and paced my office. I picked up my mobile phone and called her. It went straight to voicemail. I sent her a text message and received an error message. I didn’t understand what was happening here. I needed to speak to her now. I called for my car and drove to her apartment. After knocking loudly with no answer I used my key copies and entered.

“Kendra?” I yelled out. It was completely silent. I yelled out again. “It’s me Jaysun,” but after seeing all three rooms of the apartment I knew that she wasn’t there. Then I noticed drawers pulled open with a few of them empty. I knew what that meant. She had left. She had packed and gone somewhere. I looked around at the tables for anything she may have written down to let me know where she had gone. There was nothing. It didn’t make sense. Why would she just take off like that and why did she not return my messages? I had tried to reach her several times. We had left things off on a very good note, finally getting to the real core of our real selves. I left her apartment and went back to my office. On the way I called my private detective again adding on to his assignment. I needed him to find Kendra for me. Now, I had two messes to deal with. One was with a woman I despised and the other was with a woman I loved. As soon as I walked into my office, Mrs. Stryker herself was cleaning up and restocking my bar. I assumed because Kendra left without notice that Mrs. Stryker was taking on extra work.

“Oh Mr. Rubic, I did not know you would be returning so soon. I am just restocking your bar and I will be out of your way.”

“Thank you Mrs. Stryker. I have a question for you. Did Kendra mention where she was going or why she quit in her email?” I asked knowing full well it was an unusual and suspicious question. She turned and looked at me strangely. It was maybe the first time I had ever asked a question about an employee to her. Finally, once the shock wore off her face, she said, “No, it just said sorry for the short notice and that she would no longer be working here. Had best wishes and such and that was all. I can forward you the email if you like?”

“No that won’t be necessary. Thank you.”

“Very well,” she said, walking out. Then she turned around and said, “Oh, by the way I saw you and Miss Pepperidge on celebrity news last night. You two looked very elegant on the red carpet. The interview was just darling. I am glad you two are back together. Such a fine looking couple.”

“Wait! Mrs. Stryker. What are you talking about?”

“I saw you and Sophia Pepperidge on the celebrity news show last night before bed. It comes on late, but I always try to catch it.”

“I see, thank you.”

As soon as she walked out I knew the reason for Kendra’s disappearance. She saw me on the news or on websites with Sophia on my arm. After all the patching up of things I had done so far between us, this unraveled all of it. Now, it was going to take something drastic to get her back, if I ever had a chance of getting her back. This entire Sophia nonsense was not worth it. She was ruining all of it. She was ruining me. I picked up the phone and called her.
