“I need to see you. It’s about plans for our arrangement,” I said to Sophia over the phone. “You can come to my office or I can come to you.”

An hour later she was sitting on the couch in my office.

“How’s work? Have you had a lot of offers since last night’s appearance?”

“Yes, Jaysun darling, it is working like a charm. I have had ten offers so far. Being back in the spotlight makes all the difference,” she said smiling at me.

“Excellent. Hold on to those because it will be the last.”

“What do you mean?”

“I’m done with this Sophia. You can’t blackmail me anymore.”

“You know what I will do if you don’t do what I want. I will go straight to the papers,” she said threatening.

“Fine, do it. But think long and hard before you do. The result would be that you will no longer get your allowance from me. I am sure you’ve become accustomed to that money. Secondly, I will use every penny I have to drag your name down with me. I will show the papers all the paperwork involved in your hush money. You will be known to the world as a blackmailing bitch. How much modeling work do you think you will get then? You will be the most hated woman in America. Then I will drag you to court. It doesn’t matter for what, because I will make sure it last years and years. Do you know how much something like that will cost you? You will be bankrupt in no time,” I said as I paced the room.

Her face went from a deviant smile to a wide open shock. I was making a good point and it was getting across very well. Hitting her with what she cared about most, which were money and her famous name.

“So Sophia, you have two choices. You can choose to go to the papers with what you know and face a lifetime of bankruptcy and public humiliation. Or you can leave me quietly alone, continue to receive your allowance, and be happy about your new jobs.”

I crossed my arms feeling pretty good about my handy work. I wasn’t giving her mere threats. I would see through to everything I had said to her. She stood up from the sofa and quietly made her way to the door. “I will be happy with receiving my allowance, thank you.” Then she walked out and out of my life for good. I sighed in relief. I felt good. Now I had to explain it all to Kendra. Not that I expected her to believe me. I didn’t deserve to be believed. I had put her through so much. I waited patiently for my private eye to call me with information about her. It didn’t take him long to find a record on Kendra, a flight record that is.

“Send me the details to my phone. I’m on my way to the airport now. I just need to make a quick stop,” I said as I left my office. I felt some relief that I now knew where Kendra had gone. I had to make this right, and there was only one way to do it.

I called my assistant, “Have my jet on standby heading to Hawaii. I will be there in two hours. Do I still have my account set up at Tiffany’s? Call them and let them know that I am on my way there.”

KENDRA

I had landed in my future home. It was paradise. Being surrounded by the ocean on these magnificent islands made the air feel electric and beautiful. I felt at home even though I was just visiting to get myself set up. I checked into a beachfront hotel and spent some time resting. I wanted to be refreshed for my meetings the next day. With Blake’s help I had managed to book two appointments with advisors, and a marine biologist to show me around and help me plan my education and internships. I was excited. It felt good to be excited about something other than a man for a change. This career was making me feel fulfilled and I had not even started on it yet. That’s when I knew that everything was going to be okay. I took a long hot bath pampering myself. I was focused on myself and that was all for the first time in a long time.

The next day I got an early start and took a run on the beach. I could get used to this routine. The water was so blue that it looked unreal. The white sand made it seem like another planet. I could see dolphins leaping and playing from shore. I wanted to swim out and play with them. It was just a very magical experience. I spent the day hopping from one meeting to another feeling great about all the information I was getting. It was motivating. It felt right. There was so much to learn and so much to do in order to get my life going and I was happy for it. The busier I was the easier it would be to not think about Jaysun. That was the best distraction I could have. I would be over him in no time. Tomorrow I would meet with an apartment rental agency to start looking and picking out a place before I headed back home to pack up and send my stuff out to Hawaii. I would not wait until I was enrolled in school. There was a lot I could do in the meantime like volunteering at an aquarium or working on a research boat to start off my resume before I even started school. I was willing and ready. I was happy. Late into the night, I finally made it back to my hotel. I was excited to just sleep after a long day. I opened the door and was met with a rush of a beautiful rose scent. I flipped on the light switch and saw that my room was full of white roses. I gasped at their beauty, but then I knew that they had to be from Jaysun. He had done this before after all. I walked in further touching their delicate petals. I was happy and angry at the same time. How did he find me? Why was he doing this? What did he think sending me roses would do? That I would go running back to him? No way. Roses would not make me forget that he was a playboy. Still, it was a reminder and thoughts of him and his gorgeous body flooded my brain.

“Do you like it Kendra?”

I knew the voice before I saw him. It was Jaysun. I turned to see him lying on the bed in a dark suit. His hands were clasped behind his head and his legs were crossed at the ankles. He was making himself very comfortable in my room.

“What are you doing here? I don’t want to see you. Get out,” I said grabbing a pillow and throwing it at him. He just laughed. How dare he laugh at me.

“You’re such a jerk. I’m done with this, with you. Please just leave me alone.”

“I can’t Kendra. I want you too much.”

“Want me for what? You can find another girl to toy with. That’s all you want from me. You want me there just to fuck with, literally. I won’t be that girl anymore. I’m going to start my life here. This is what I want. Not you.”

“I know why you’re mad. I will get out. If you just let me say what I came here to say.”

I paused. I was scared to let him talk. He had this magic over me and his sweet talking was part of it. I believed everything he had to say every time. He was a salesman. It’s what he did. He was a fake. He fooled people into letting them think he was the head of a billion dollar Tech Company and he wasn’t. He was a fraud. He was good at faking and it worked on me every time.

“Fine! Then you will leave me alone forever?”

“If that’s what you want.”

“Get on with it then,” I said sitting in the chair and crossing my arms in front of me.

“Thank you. To start I assume that you did not hear any of my messages. That maybe you heard or saw about the Sophia thing and didn’t even bother to listen to my messages explaining that she is one of the women who have been blackmailing me. That she showed up at Janet’s demanding I go to the gala with her so she could garner publicity and get some modeling work out of it, or she would expose us if I did not?”

I looked at him in shock. That thought never even crossed my mind. How could it? He never told me who the women were that were blackmailing him.

“No. I did not listen to your messages. Go on,” I said pretending not to believe him. I would not give in so easily.

“I suspected as much. If you had you would have known everything I just told you and that I was figuring out a way to get out of it. I only went with her that one night in order to keep her quiet while I figured it out. I did not touch her. I despise her. She’s an evil bitch. It was the gala, and that was it. I went home, and was in a meeting with my private detective bright and early trying to figure it out. If I had known you saw Sophia and I together, without listening to my messages, I would have rushed to your side first, but I didn’t know. I didn’t know until Mrs. Stryker told me you quit. I took care of Sophia. She won’t be bothering me anymore. She is going to stay quiet for her usual amount of money and leave it at that. Now do you want to tell me why I had to track you down all the way across the ocean?”

“Am I supposed to believe you? How do I know you’re not lying? That you really are seeing her? I don’t believe anything you say to me anymore. I am over it. I need to get on with my life. Being with you is just hurting me and holding me back. It’s breaking my heart over and over again and there’s only so much a person can take. I can’t take any more of your promises. I don’t work for you anymore. You have no authority over me.”

“You’re right. I can see why my words have seemed meaningless to you. They must seem like empty promises. So I want to make a real promise to you. It’s the only way I can get you to believe that I really do love you and that I want only you. I won’t give up on us.”

He walked over to me. Then he did something that made my heart drop to my stomach. He got down on his knees next to my chair. My eyes widened as he pulled out a Tiffany box. I didn’t know if it would be another necklace or something more. He opened it and there it was, a diamond ring. It was massive.

“Kendra, will you be my wife? Will you do me the honor of being Mrs. Kendra Rubic? You can do anything you want? I won’t stand in your way of your education and career. I only want to be beside you as your partner in life as you do it.”

Tears welled up in my eyes. I was not expecting this at all. He caught me off guard. I wanted so much to disbelieve everything he had told me so far, but this was a bigger promise than I could have ever expected.

“Is this real Jaysun? Or are you going to become engaged to me and then leave me?”

“No, I wouldn’t do that. As long as you know that misunderstandings happen and it will help me out if you don’t jump to conclusions and just talk it out first, then I want to give us a chance. I love you, Kendra. This is real. This is what I want. I want to be your husband.”

“Then…Yes!” I said jumping into his arms. I kissed him hard. He laughed. He held me close kissing me. Then he slipped the ring on my finger. The diamond gleamed in the light and sparkled. I couldn’t believe this was real. This was really happening.

“I have one more surprise for you,” he said grabbing my hand. A few minutes later we were in the back of a black car making out hard as the driver drove us through the island. We finally arrived at a house on the beach.

“This is ours. It’s walking distance to the university and comes with a dock and boat with a driver for your research needs,” Jaysun said as he ran inside dragging me along with him. He was excited like a kid running through a new home. I was so happy I cried.

“Jaysun! It’s beautiful! I can’t believe how perfect it is! This is really ours?”

“Yes, my love. It is ours. Look, come out here.” I followed him out onto the deck. It faced the ocean and it reminded me of the deck on his Vancouver home.

“Look, there’s a telescope here so you can whale watch in your robe if you want too. I had them pick out this house in a perfect spot known for whale traffic,” he said happily.

Hearing those words made me realize just how much he cared about my dreams. It made me realize just how much he cared about me. I loved him so much. This was perfect now. When he first showed up I expected him to have some sweet words to convince me to come back to him, but I was not expecting a marriage proposal and a home start our lives together in. This felt more real now, and then it ever had before. I felt more trusting of him than I ever had before because it was now official. I was to be his wife and continue with my dreams and education. It was suddenly perfect, and I had my dream man staring at me like I was worth more to him than a billion dollars and it felt good. It felt right.

“I love you Kendra, my future wife,” he said pulling me close.

“I love you Jaysun, my future husband,” I laughed.

“I’ve been waiting a long time to hear that,” he said as he kissed me.

Then we made love in each room of the house. In a week, we were married and starting our life in Hawaii as Jaysun went back and forth on his jet for work weeks at a time. It was perfect, and it was all mine.

ZAK

PART 1

AVA

I wasn't used to having anyone take care of me, so when Zak showed up, a professional in what he did, and a retired Navy seal, I didn't know how to act. I didn't know what to think. I didn't know how to feel. But eventually he showed me how to feel, and how to feel him. When he first showed up in my life I didn't know that he had been sent to protect me. I had spent 10 years living like someone in the witness protection program because of something I had witnessed when I was just 10 years old. The traumatic experience was one that I always tried to forget. But it was an experience that didn't forget me. It always hunted me. It always found me. That is why Zak was sent to protect me. Of course, I didn't know what would end up happening would change my life forever. My dark secret was kept from Zak, and he only knew that he was here to protect me at all costs. Little did we know, things would turn out the way they did. That we would both end up intertwined in each other’s lives more than we would have ever dreamed.
