Julia winked and stepped back to put on her trousers and sweater.

I didn’t say anything to her, just watching the way her body moved bewitched me. The emerald green sweater brought out the blue in her eyes and the highlights in her hair, just like the dress she had worn last week. I decided to buy her an emerald green pendant, and a diamond engagement ring if she would wear it. She didn’t seem to wear much jewellery.

“Yes I would wear it Alex, but if you are going to propose to me then I suggest we wait until my divorce comes through first.”

“Damn, I forgot you can hear my thoughts. I think I need to get the hang of this telepathic business or I will never be able to surprise you with anything. I think because it’s so new we can’t put a block up yet.”

“What do you mean a by a block?” She questioned curiously.

“We should be able to select when we communicate telepathically. Like when you choose to speak or stay quiet. At the moment it’s a bit full on because the bond is so new and seems so strong right away. Some bonded couples wait weeks for this to happen.”

“I suppose that makes us special then Alex. But when I think about our relationship, everything about us has happened so quickly anyway.  I’m happy about it though, and I know you are too.”

“I am. If it weren’t for this mysterious fucking vampire everything would be perfect.”

“That’s exactly my point. So get dressed and let’s go see Josh to get some answers.”

Twenty minutes later we walked in to the offices. Nik and Josh sensed our bond immediately, and came to hug Julia and shake my hand.

Maggie got all teary and hugged us both for what seemed like forever before she went to the bathrooms to sort out her makeup. With her tears most of it had ended up on my black shirt and I was now trying to wipe it off with a tissue.

I loved Maggie dearly and wish I could keep her with us forever. But she chose to grow old with her husband and family over the immortality we offered, and I couldn’t blame her. Although selfishly I wish she would reconsider.

“We checked the car hire firm and the man who hired the car Julia saw was called Brian Vargan. Does that name ring any bells with you?” Nik asked.

“No, not at all. The surname sounds German, definitely European anyway.”

“I rang Freya and she doesn’t know the name either,” said Josh rubbing his face. “Of course we have all chosen different names to adapt to immortal life in whichever country we live in. I did it and so did you Alex, so the name may not be any help anyway.”

He was right of course. I don’t think my Nordic name would fit in so well in Yorkshire. Josh’s mobile started ringing and he announced that it was Viktor on the line. He put Viktor on speakerphone and asked him what he had found.

“Hello my friends, I have some strange news for you all.”

“Go ahead Viktor and thanks for your help by the way,” I said leaning in towards the phone.

“No problem Alex. I hope you are all well. I hear you have a woman now. Gregor says she is very beautiful, but Sergei says she kisses women.”

Everyone in the office laughed and Julia groaned. “I am never drinking with Sergei again,” she said, shaking her head.

“Ah, is this Julia I hear now,” said Viktor.

“Yes, hello Viktor.”

“Hello Julia, you must come to Russia soon and visit with us.”
“Julia and I bonded tonight Viktor,” I said, and I couldn’t hide the pride and love in my voice even if I tried.

“That is great news my friend, I am so happy for you. I must tell Gregor and Sergei. Unfortunately I cannot pass the news on to Ivan as he is still missing and even I cannot trace him. Although I am sure he will turn up soon, he always does.”

“What did you find for us Viktor?” Josh asked.

“This car we traced to airport yes?”

“Yes, Manchester.”

“Well the name on the hire paper, Brian Vargan, no one of this name has flown in through Manchester airport in the last two months.”

Josh and Nik both looked at me and then back towards the phone.

“I assume you have more news for us Viktor?”

“Yes my friends. I checked every other airport in the UK starting with those closest to you and still came up with nothing. But then I checked the ferry ports and found a Brian Vargan sailed in from Calais to Dover the day before the car was hired from Manchester airport three weeks ago. He came in with a car, the registration and make I have emailed to you Joshua. I am running a trace on the car as we speak and should find out more information very soon.”

“Thanks Viktor, I owe you one.”

“You always say this Alex and the ones you are owing me are all adding up my friend,” Viktor laughed.

“Come over and work in Yorkshire Viktor. You can even have your own office.”

“No chance my friend. There are too many green fields and sheep.”

We all laughed. Viktor’s fear of sheep was hilarious.

“You all laugh at Viktor, I know this, but the sheep, they are sent from the devil. One day you will see this and then you will not laugh at Viktor,” he said in all seriousness.

“Goodbye Viktor, Josh laughed,” and keep in touch.

“Goodbye my Yorkshire friends,” he said. Then he hung up.

“Does he really hate sheep,” asked Julia.

“It’s more of a phobia really,” replied Nik. “When he came over with Gregor and Sergei one time, we got really drunk on Vodka and Absinth that we had sneaked in to the Red Lion, and we ended up walking home. Viktor never drinks so it hit him hard. We went over the wall of a field for a piss and somehow we lost Viktor.”

“I thought you lot couldn’t get that drunk,” she said.

“This stuff was made by vampires, for vampires, and it was lethal. Anyway Viktor woke up the next morning hung-over and surrounded by sheep. He’s had a sheep phobia ever since. Says they spoke to him. We both said that will have been the Absinth, but Viktor disagrees. Then Josh sent him clips of that film Babe, where the sheep talk to the pigs, and he refused to come back to Yorkshire after that.”

“Josh that was an awful thing you did to poor Viktor,” said Maggie as she walked back into the room looking as pretty as ever. Her makeup all back to normal.

Julia couldn’t stop giggling and it was a lovely sound. She was running her hands over my shoulders and I was enjoying her touch. I could tell she was wanting me to hold her through our bond, so I took one of her hands and brought her around to sit on my lap.

Josh opened up the email that Viktor sent and went through the details. To be honest we were still none the wiser to who this vampire was, but at least we had something to go on that we didn’t have before. That, I realised, was thanks to Julia and her sighting of the car. I was torn between feeling really sorry that I had gotten so angry with Julia, but was also still annoyed she had put herself at risk.

She kissed me on the cheek and said I should stop fretting about it. I forgot she could sense my feelings and hear my thoughts through our bond, but I was grateful that she tried to sooth and calm me, and keep me grounded.

Then a change came over her and she lay against my chest and licked my throat.

This gave me the most erotic thoughts I think I had ever had, and I stood up quickly, grabbing Julia’s coat from the rack and tugging her towards the door.

The bond was really starting to kick in at this moment and if I didn’t get her home soon I would fuck her right there, over my desk in front of everyone.

I heard Nik chuckle and say, “Get used to this feeling you two. You have days of this left yet.”

I didn’t reply because Julia and I were out the door and home much faster than even I thought possible.

Chapter 30

Alex

Bonding with Julia was exhausting. I drank both from her and the bagged blood we had brought in from our donors, but it never seemed to be enough. The sex we had was phenomenal and I can honestly say that being bonded to the woman I love was the best thing that had ever happened to me.

Humans talk about being tied down in a relationship but when were together in each other’s embrace, I felt like I was soaring high above the clouds and all was good with the world.

We found out that the vampire Brian Vargan had left the UK for France the same night that Julia had seen him. I wish we could have known who it was from her description, but tall, blond and well built wasn’t much to go on. After all, that kind of described me.

But at least he was out of the country for the moment, and Viktor had placed alerts at every UK airport and ferry port so we would know if he came back.

Julia’s parents were having a great time on their holiday, and that meant that they weren’t around to interrupt us in our first few days as a bonded couple.

Freya had done enough of that already. On hearing from Joshua that we had bonded, she immediately left his cottage to come and congratulate us. Unfortunately we hadn’t locked the door in our race to make love, and she caught Julia and I in a very uncompromising position.

After apologising, she hid behind the Kitchen door and congratulated us on our bonding.

You didn’t need to have vampire hearing to know how hard she laughed once she had closed the door behind her though, and the very next morning, after giving us another red faced congratulations, she left for her home in Aldbrough on the rugged East Yorkshire coast.

By Monday the effects of the bond had settled down enough for us to go to work, although we did end up having sex in the conference room, and at home on our midnight break.

In general everything was going great, but I sensed a big mood change in Julia by mid week.

I didn’t seem to be doing anything right and it was like treading on egg shells around her. By Friday the source of all the anger became apparent.

Julia got her period.

I don’t know why I didn’t recognise it before because the office used to be a terrible place in Maggie’s younger years… and then she started the menopause. When she went on HRT we were all so relieved that we sent her doctor a gift.

Now I was just going to have to deal with Julia’s moods when she had PMT. But it was easier said than done.

I came home on Friday to Julia being in a rage because I had eaten all the chocolate chip cookies she had bought from the works canteen. So I went over to the canteen and bought whatever cookies they had left, and four of Moira’s famous cupcakes. I got back home a made her a large mug of tea and brought her a plate of cookies and cupcakes. I thought she would be pleased, but I didn’t expect her to be in tears at my thoughtfulness.

I dried her tears, kissed her on the cheek and went for a shower.

When I came out of the shower I put on my sweatpants and went to sit at the side of her on the sofa, and just happened to mention that she must have enjoyed the cookies and cupcakes because she had eaten them all.

BIG MISTAKE.

The yelling and plate throwing that followed was bloody scary, and the bond didn’t help matters either. It got to the point where I wasn’t sure what words were coming out of her mouth or her head, and when she walked off into the bedroom and slammed the door I felt so relieved.

That is of course until I could hear her tears again.

So off I went to the bedroom after her and asked her what was wrong now.

This time she said she was upset because she felt really fat due to her eating all the cookies and cupcakes in one sitting. So after thinking for a moment, I suggested we go to the works gym together the next day.

ANOTHER BIG MISTAKE.

More tears came because apparently, me suggesting that we went to the gym together meant that I was going off her because I thought she was fat, and that her thighs were too big???

Then she got angry again because, ‘who did I think I was anyway, telling her she was fat?’

After five minutes of defending myself, repeatedly telling her that I didn’t think she was fat and that I loved her more than ever, she finally calmed down.

Then she got up off the bed like nothing had happened, and suggested we go and watch a movie.

So that’s what we did; until Julia fell asleep and I searched my Smartphone for anyone local who could perform an exorcism. Because I’ve seen a lot of things in my years, and what just transpired here tonight couldn’t just have been due to PMT, could it?

Freya called and I spoke to her quietly whilst Julia slept. I explained the situation and Freya (who was the oracle of all things immortal) told me that when a female is newly bonded to an immortal male, everything is heightened. Not only their senses and emotions that link them to their bonded mate, but all senses, and emotions linked to their hormones too. Apparently for the first couple of months she would be this way until her body became fully accustomed to being bonded by blood. I suppose in a way it was similar to when you first become a vampire. When you feel anger it is uncontrollable, and your need for blood sends all rationality out of the window.

Freya told me to remind Julia that this effect was only temporary and at least it meant she would be fertile.

I apologised to Freya for talking to her about this, but she said I was being silly to do so.

As far as we were aware, an immortal female was no longer fertile. Freya had all sorts of information that she had collected over the years, and of course we had met many immortals. But as yet we knew of no immortal vampire female who had gotten pregnant.

Therefore it did not seem fair that an immortal male could impregnate a human female. I often wondered if this was the reason that Freya had not entered into a relationship with anyone. She had enough admirers over the centuries but she chose to remain single.
