“Alex we can leave if you want, we don’t have to stay here. Everything is sorted with the raffle and the prizes, so if you need to leave we can go straight home.”

I kissed Julia on the tip of her nose and shook my head. For the first time ever I wanted to stay and watch a bonfire night celebration. I wanted to carry on watching Julia’s face light up with all the colourful fireworks, and see the smile she wore when some made the funny sounds.

“Would you like some bonfire toffee Alex,” said Julia’s mum as she held out an opened tin towards me.”

“You have to have some Alex, its homemade,” said Nik as he reached in the tin and took a huge piece.

“Better get some quick before Nik steals the lot,” laughed Gina. “You know what a sweet tooth he’s got.”

Nik really did have a sweet tooth. Especially if he was stressed. I watched him bend to kiss Gina on the lips, then whisper something in her ear. She giggled again and I watched as her pupils dilated.

It appeared I wasn’t the only one looking at the loved up couple.

As I took my piece of toffee and thanked Julia’s mum I became aware of more than one set of eyes on Nik and Gina.

A quick scan of the crowd of people stood around the bonfire told me that a few ladies and a couple of men were talking behind their hands whilst nodding towards the couple.

Now normally no vampire likes to attract attention to themselves, but I had the feeling Nik was playing up to the crowd a little tonight.

When Gina’s son Jack came towards Nik and Gina with a couple of beers and a wine, I took the opportunity to speak to Julia.

“What’s up with all the dirty looks coming their way?”
“Apparently, Gina and Nik had a run in with some superbitch at Mr Singh’s earlier today and it appears that Gina has been the topic of village gossip for leaving her husband.”

This would really upset Gina. She sometimes acted tough but she was a sensitive soul and tended to let things get to her.

I was glad her son was here to show support to her. Buying his mum and Nik a drink, and now laughing and joking with them would go a long way to let the village know that he accepted Gina and Nik as a couple.

“Ooh Alex, look at the Catherine wheels,” Julia squealed.

“They were always her favourites when she was a little girl. She never really liked the ones with the loud bangs,” said Sue, Julia’s mum.

“And your favourites were the traffic light ones,” smiled Julia, as she grabbed her mother’s hand.

Sue leaned over and kissed her daughters cheek, and then surprisingly, she pulled me down and kissed my cheek too.

“Thank you Alex, for bringing my daughter back to me.”

There were tears in her eyes but she quickly wiped them away, and turned to watch the last of the fireworks. I placed myself in the middle of Julia and her mum, and put an arm around each of them. We stayed that way until Josh came over with a tray of hot chocolate drinks in plastic cups, and we all took one, warming our hands on them, as the fire warmed our faces.

We stayed until the bonfire burned down to about four feet high.  That’s when I started to feel uncomfortable with watching the flames dance around the charred and almost skeletal look of the old bed frames and chairs that someone had thrown on to it.

Julia and Josh sensed straight away that it was getting too much for me and it was suggested that Josh drive Sue home and see her in safely, and I would take Gina and Nik home. Josh wanted to be back at the Red Lion for last orders as he did every bonfire night. He always like to see that the fire was out before the pub closed up for the night.

Julia and I held hands all the way home. It seemed my time away from her today had an effect on both of us, as we had to be touching each other, even if it was just our fingertips.

As soon as we got home we went to the bedroom and set the shower running. Our clothes and hair smelled of bonfire and candy floss, especially Julia’s. I stripped first, and then removed all her clothes, kissing her as I stripped away each item, and when she was naked I carried her into the shower.

After washing each other, we made love in the shower and drank from each other. I needed the taste of her blood tonight. So much had happened today and I needed her essence to give me strength emotionally, as well as physically. When we had satisfied ourselves with blood and pleasure, we dried off and Julia got into bed whilst I brought in a mug of Horlicks for us both to drink before we snuggled up under the covers to warm our naked bodies.

Julia asked if I wanted to talk about what happened today with Freya. She knew we were going to Staithes to place the wreathes, but not about going to Whitby for the rings. I said that it was very sad and that I worried for Freya.

I told Julia about Freya always having a single flower in mother’s wreath to represent our father.

I hoped that one day we could both fully mourn the man my mother loved and not the monster that he became. Although after nine hundred and fifty years I had to doubt that day would ever come.

Chapter 35

Julia

I woke up earlier than normal as we hadn’t been at work last night. After going to the bathroom I stopped at the curtains and peeked outside. Why was the day after bonfire night always so foggy and grey? It was the same every year so I shouldn’t be surprised really. I quickly closed the curtains so I didn’t wake Alex, then I put the central heating on and got back in bed until it warmed up the cottage.

Alex opened one eye and looked at me sleepily.

“Come here love,” he said whilst pulling me into his arms, my back to his front. I could feel the heat from his morning erection against my cold bottom.

He ground it against me and fondled my already hardened nipples. Looks like Alex had woken up in a good mood then.

He nipped the skin between my neck and shoulder, not piercing the skin but enough to leave teeth marks.  Then he ran his nose up the side of my neck to the back of my ear and said, “Mmm you smell different.”

I turned over onto my back so I could kiss him and pulled him down so that he lay on top of me.

The kiss was filled with passion and want, the type of kiss that makes you wet in seconds. But suddenly it stopped. Alex pushed himself upright and stared down at me.

“Julia, you taste different too.”

“Alex, stop with the little red riding hood nonsense and get back to what we were doing. I’m so ready for you right now I think I will come as soon as you’re inside me.”

Alex didn’t make a move, he just stared at me. Then he lifted my hand, let his fangs descend and bit into my wrist. “Ooww,” I yelped.  It certainly wasn’t as pleasant as when he bit me when I was in the throes of orgasm.

“Alex, what on earth is wrong with you.”
He looked down at me, his eyes glazing over with tears.

“Alex, what’s wrong with me. Am I going to be ill?”
He shook his head and smiled. “Maybe a little sick in the mornings, but no, you are not ill.” “I’m pregnant,” I gasped, happy but a little confused.

“Only just I think. But your scents definitely changed. I thought something was different last night when I drank your blood. It had a much sweeter taste to it, but I thought all that candy floss and bonfire toffee you ate may have had something to do with it.”

“Are you really sure Alex? I don’t want to get my hopes up and then you be wrong.”

“Well I have never tasted the blood of a pregnant woman before, but I’ve heard from other blood bonded immortals that it does have a much sweeter taste than normal. And you definitely smell like a pregnant woman usually does. We can get a test later if you want to confirm it but I am really sure that you are pregnant Julia.”

I wasn’t sure what to think. I needed evidence, needed to pee on a stick and see for myself that what Alex had said just was true. I wanted to be 100% sure that my body was giving me a second chance at motherhood.

Alex sat up against the headboard and pulled me up to sit on his lap.

“Aren’t you happy about it Julia?”

I hated to hear the note of sadness in his voice, but I needed him to know that I couldn’t allow myself to get excited yet.

“I’m sorry Alex, but I need to see a positive pregnancy test before I allow myself to believe that I’m carrying another child. I don’t doubt that you’ve picked something up from my scent or taste but I don’t think a doctor would be satisfied that I was pregnant just from those reasons alone either.”

Then I will go to the chemists now and get you some tests. Do you want anything else while I’m there?”

“Well if it turns out that I am pregnant then I will need some folic acid.”
“What the hell is folic acid? That doesn’t sound healthy for a pregnant woman. And where on earth do you put that?” He said as he quickly got dressed.

I could tell from our bond all the different places that he imagined I could put folic acid. I think he thought that it was something like an exfoliator to slough off dead skin.

“It’s part of the extra vitamins and minerals that a pregnant woman needs.”
He still didn’t look sure and I couldn’t help but laugh.

“Alex, can you go to Rothley for it. If you go to the chemists in Barrowfield it will be all around the village before I even do the test. I want us to be able to tell everyone together, especially my parents.”

“I understand love, and I will be back as soon as I can.”
He grabbed his keys, kissed me on the lips, told me he loved me through our bond, and then he hurried out of the door.

We had been together almost two months and in that time we had gone from being just friends to committing ourselves to being together forever. And now we may have a baby on the way.

I know Alex said he wanted me pregnant as soon as possible but I didn’t think it would happen straight away. It took years for me to get pregnant with Megan and I kind of thought it would take me just as long to get pregnant again. I should have known Alex would have supersperm.

I started to get butterflies in my tummy and excitement started to kick in. I needed to start to do something to take my mind off it until Alex got back.

As if I could. This was too big to just switch off and wait.

I set the shower off running and got in. I had washed my hair last night but I washed and conditioned it again anyway. I took my time shaving my legs and underarms, as well as exfoliating my body and decided I would get another spray tan and more highlights in my hair. It would be time for another ladies night out soon and although I wouldn’t be able to have any alcohol this time, I could still dance and have fun, although I may give the karaoke a miss.

When I had finally used up all the hot water I got out of the shower and looked at the clock on wall. Only twenty minutes had passed since Alex had left so I needed to kill some more time.

I blow dried my hair and then used my hair straighteners to give it some soft curls. Then I applied moisturisers and body creams before I put on a little make up.

Another twenty minutes gone. Now I was starting to feel a little sick. The butterflies in my tummy had grown and I couldn’t seem to calm myself down.

I put some bacon under the grill for us both and put some eggs on to boil.

Music! That’s what I needed.

Alex has the radio or cd’s on all the time and it always put him in a good mood.

After another twenty minutes of anxious dancing, cooking and hoovering up, Alex finally walked through the door.

I pretended not to be bothered about what he had in the carrier bag for all of about ten seconds, and then I grabbed it and tipped the contents on to the kitchen counter.

There were three different pregnancy tests, a tub of folic acid, a book about pregnancy, and prenatal vitamins and minerals. I asked if Alex wanted to eat his breakfast first and he just looked at me and shook his head.

“Let’s get it over and done with Julia. The emotions swirling around your head at the moment are too much for either of us to handle.”

I had forgotten that Alex could feel everything I was feeling through our bond. I often forgot that he was a vampire. Sometimes things are just so normal that it was easy to forget.

I picked up the tests and went to the en suite bathroom. I bent to pick up the towel I had used in the shower earlier and hung it on the rack.

“Stop stalling love and just do the test.”

“I didn’t realise you were behind me Alex. You don’t need to stay for this bit.”
“I’m staying Julia. So just hurry up and pee on one.” I took one out of the packet, quickly read through the instructions, and got down to pee. I then placed the test on the side of the sink and washed my hands.

Alex was timing the five minutes of waiting time on his phone, watching the test the whole time. But I couldn’t look, and neither of us spoke.

When his phone bleeped I finally looked up and saw the biggest grin on Alex’s face as he lifted up the test and placed it against the instruction paper.

“Two blue lines Julia. That means you are pregnant love.”
He picked me up and twirled me around the small space before placing my feet back on the floor and dropping a big wet kiss on my lips.

I couldn’t help the tears that fell at that moment as I looked up at Alex and smiled.

“We are going to be good parents Alex. Our baby is going to be so loved and cherished by everyone around them.”

“That it will love, just like I love and cherish it’s mummy.”

I went to take the take the test and put it back in the box to throw away but Alex snatched it away from me.

“You can’t have it woman. I’m keeping it.” “Why on earth would you want to keep something I’ve pee’d on?” I asked.
