Prologue
Trey
T
rey Lennon had finally come back to the States after spending five months in Belfast though home was no longer Pine Bluff but Birch Tree.
His Lucifer’s Saints cut fit him like a glove; the butter-soft leather reminding him it was new rather than old and well worn. He didn’t want to think about how strange it was that he no longer wore the Demon’s Bastards’ colors or answered to Tom “Jonesy” Hughes.
He innately understood this was the moment he’d been waiting for since he’d found out the truth.
Keri was gone and Northern Ireland just a vivid memory that felt more like a nightmare. The icy cold of an approaching winter bit into his skin. The sky was a vivid, brilliant blue and the sun was shining but all he could think about was how his sister, Trista, and her husband, Linx, were gone. He’d accompanied them to the airport and watched as they boarded a flight to L.A along with Ronan and Hardy. It seemed like a lifetime ago, though only a few hours had passed and now, he was alone with his new club.
He’d been in the life and part of an MC since his teen years but the sudden change left him feeling unsure about his new status. He still bore the title of Sergeant at Arms but he’d replaced Ronan, his younger half-brother.
Everything was now official.
Dizzy claimed him as his son and welcomed his homecoming. Trista and Linx were safe and would be going back to their glamorous life. For Linx, that meant being the bassist for the wildly successful band, Winter’s Regret; for his sister, that meant being the wife of a rock star. However, for Trey, nothing changed at all except his cut and his club.
He didn’t have his girl and what awaited him in the future, as a member of the Saints, was anyone’s guess. He should have felt settled but an overwhelming feeling of restlessness had taken root and wouldn’t let go.
Cillian strolled out of the clubhouse and made his way over, sitting beside him on the picnic table bench. Trey smoked a cigarette and glanced at the club VP before he looked away.
“We got chapel in a few minutes, and Da wanted to make sure you were comin’. How you doin’?” Cillian asked, his Northern Irish accent strong.
Trey shrugged his shoulders. “I’m as good as I’m gonna be.”
His older brother stared at him for a long time. “You lost your girl, Trey. I’m not going to sugarcoat the situation and tell ya everything will be all right. When I lost Gisela, nothin’ was okay—”
“She wasn’t
dead
, Cillian, just gone. Keri can’t come back into my life and I’ll never hear her laugh or see her smile again. Nel, her old man, had her murdered ’cause she was with me and that’s something I have to take to the grave with me. How am I supposed to forgive myself when I caused this nightmare in the first place? I shoulda never shot Brooklyn.”
“Shoulda, woulda, coulda.” Cillian glared with cold blue eyes. “You can’t take anythin’ back now. All you can do is move the fuck on. Keri would’ve wanted that.”
“Yeah, I know…but move on to what? To who?” Trey wondered as he stubbed out his cigarette.
“Only you know the ‘who,’ brother. As to the ‘what,’ shit’s about to go down with
Aztecas Infierno
and we need you on board. This negotiation is a make or break deal. We need you to straighten up and fly right. Be your usual badass self ’cause the manpower is a must. They think we’re gettin’ soft. I need some intel on what Carlito’s doin’. Ever since he got together with Brendan’s daughter, he seems to think he’s got somethin’ on us—he ain’t got shit,” Cillian explained in a quiet voice.
“Shouldn’t we be talkin’ about this in chapel? I mean, if the Feds are watchin’, we’re just givin’ them info.”
“Everyone will have a say in chapel, Trey. I’m speakin’ to you, man to man. Your hacking skills are legendary around these parts. A lot of the brothers believe you’re the reason the Bastards have done so well over the years.”
Trey shook his head. “I wouldn’t ever take all the credit. Sure, I’m fuckin’ excellent at what I do but Jonesy was a great Prez. That’s no disrespect against Dizzy ’cause I know he does right by the brothers but…you gotta understand I’m torn here. I understand where my allegiance is, I got no qualms with it, but switchin’ clubs is no walk in the park.”
“I didn’t think it was easy,” Cillian said as he looked into the distance. “This club is all I know. I was born into the life; I’ll die here too. The club is more than just brotherhood—it’s your life, your family. Bein’ part of the Bastards and then changin’ affiliations must be the same as losin’ everyone who ever meant something to ya.”
“Almost.” Trey stood. “I got my sister and I still got Dizzy. He’s always been good to me, and they’re the reason I can save dyin’ for another day. It’s hard doin’ what I did but not impossible. Not when you got people who love you and only want what’s best for you.”
“Trista’s a wild one, brother. She loves you to death and would do anythin’ for you. Linx patched in without a second thought…just to help save you, for her. O’Neal’s next and it’s on the schedule to talk about today in chapel. You ready to go?”
He nodded as Cillian stood and they faced each other.
“I don’t know if I ever told ya but…welcome home, brother. Dizzy’s been hurtin’, and he’s glad he can finally claim you as one of his own—one of
us
. Out of all his kids, you’re the favorite. Me an’ you—we don’t have the best history together. There’s shit you need to know but I’ll save it for another time and place. Just understand no matter what goes down, I’ll always have your back.”
Trey glanced at him, his hazel-green eyes bright with unspoken emotions. “That means more to me than you could ever know.”
The two men walked back into the clubhouse together and directly to chapel. Trey didn’t have a clue what his future held but the life he lived had taken on a whole new meaning. Regardless what happened, he would always support his brothers and innately understood they’d have his back too.
The part of Trey that promised lifelong allegiance to the Demon’s Bastards withered away until it no longer existed. His heart had always belonged to the Lucifer’s Saints, because of his connection with Dizzy, and rose like a phoenix from the ashes.
No matter what happened during the remainder of his life, nothing would ever be the same. He had to accept it, whether he was ready to or not.
