“Okay,” she didn’t know how to speak to him. All she could do was stare up at him.
He wrapped an arm around her waist and turned so her back was against the bar. He bent down and ran his lips over her jaw and up to her mouth, nipping her with a fang. She tasted her own blood as he sucked her lower lip and for a minute, she felt panic, but then looked into his eyes again. The panic subsided and she let him kiss her. It wasn’t until his hand was under her shirt and beneath her bra that she realized they had an audience and she was moaning loudly. She gasped and tried to push him away, causing him to laugh.
“Come on, we’ll go somewhere together.”
They did; they went to his apartment. It was on the very bottom floor of the building. She felt like she was in some short of cave beneath the city and he led her to the bed. For another moment, that panicky feeling came to her again and then he put a finger under her chin and made her look into those gorgeous eyes and she was lost again.
“What are you doing to me, Victor?” she asked feeling tired and loopy from the lust coursing through her body.
Her skin vibrated with anticipation of his touch and heat pooled in her abdomen as he brought both hands to her face and kissed her. She wasn’t able to move. He laid her down and tied both her hands to the bedpost. Once she was secure, he moved his lips down her neck and bit her.
“No wait, no biting,” she tried to tell him, but he’d already done it.
The blood was flowing from her neck into his mouth. It was impossible to move and she didn’t want it to happen anymore. She was truly terrified and he continued to drink. She started to cry so he pulled away and looked into her eyes again and she forgot she was scared. He took her body and drank from her while he screwed her. She didn’t have any power, and most of the time, she thought it was what she wanted. It would only be apparent to her that she was being manipulated when he’d leave her tied to the bed. It went on for days and in between taking her body, he would ask questions about her family, the hunters, the order, and everything. He wanted information. Rita had given it to him and she’d given him her body. He’d not had to take it. He’d simply had to look into her eyes.
One day, after a long questioning, her father burst into the lair and shot Victor. He was so angry he hadn’t taken the normal precautions or given the vampire a fair chance; he’d killed him. Rita was traumatized. She needed to leave, so the order moved them to their current home and she tried to put those days of no control behind her.
Chapter Four
Asher was free to go forth and bite whom he wanted now, but he was tired instead of hungry. He headed back to his crypt to sleep it off and regroup. It had been a very confusing night and he wasn’t sure what to think of the vampire hunter that didn’t want to hunt vampires.
When he entered the front of his crypt something large slammed into him and he crashed painfully into the wall. He looked up to see someone he’d dealt with before. A large mountain lion named Tater. If there was a shifter mafia, then Tater was the muscle and it wasn’t going to fare well for him. Jessie was there too, sitting on his bed. Clearly, his threats earlier to pay his ex-wife hadn’t sat well with him and he’d called in the big guns. There was another guy he didn’t recognize standing beside Jesse with a snake tattoo up the side of his throat. The forked tongue extended up onto his cheek. This guy moved forward and knocked him back down as he struggled to get up.
“Hey there Tater, long time no see.” He nodded to the other guys. “Jesse, Snake Man.”
“If you’re going to be working in this area, and fucking with people who work for Grant, then you’re going to pay him.” Tater was standing over him and Asher had a feeling he was going to kick him. Grant would be the equivalent of a mafia boss in the shifter world, and one Asher had been involved with before. “You aren't going to get away with this shit anymore. I want 50,000 or I'm going to kill your girlfriend.” He picked Asher up and threw him against the wall again.
Asher sat up and rubbed his head. "I don't have a girlfriend. What are you even talking about?"
“You were outside her house. You can’t pretend with us, we can shift remember. Larry here saw everything from her yard.”
Snake guy was Larry, that wasn’t a name he would have picked for him.
“Why would you think I had 50,000 just lying around?" That was a ludicrous amount for even him. “I get just enough money from my services to pay my crypt keeper.”
“Wait, he's called a crypt keeper?” Tater was yelling right in his ear, and he nodded. The three men laughed loudly, confusing him.
“And to keep myself comfortable. I don't have that much money.”
“You don't, but those hunters do. They have access to the orders funds and you can easily manipulate them into giving it to you. That's especially true of your little hunter whore.”
Asher's face grew hot and he rushed forward at the large man, getting knocked back on his ass.
“You're a real big man with these brutes, Jesse. Wish they could have seen you pissing your pants and leaving your girl for me to fuck."
Jesse ran forward and kicked Asher, yelling in his face, “She was a gutter slut anyway.”
“Still a good fuck,” Asher screamed after them as they walked out of his home.
Tater grabbed him by the shirt and lifted him up. “You have until Saturday to get the money from them or I'll kill her.”
Asher lay on the floor for a while before jumping up and starting to pack his stuff. He would leave town. This was a network of shifters that could have him killed by a number of people in their employ, including other vampires. He didn't need to mess with that. If he left though, Rita would be in danger. She could fend for herself, or at least he thought she could. Maybe they'd just forget about their promise to kill her.
She just wanted to be a paralegal and with one kiss, he'd destroyed her life. He couldn't leave. After he threw some of his things and broke several, he decided to try and sleep. They wouldn't make their move right away. Part of him thought maybe he could find enough work to make it. He did have a meeting the next evening with a potential client. Maybe he could raise his prices. These thoughts helped him go to sleep and he slept deep into the next day, awakening with a start. The events of the night before came back to him and he groaned, wishing he could just go back to sleep but he needed to eat.
There were willing donors the general population didn't know about. Women and men who got off on letting vampires suck their blood. That was the easiest way for him to eat. So he got up and showered. The little cave had everything he needed.
At some point, his crypt keeper had turned the graveyard into a moneymaking factory, putting bedrooms and plumbing in the crypts just for vampires. They had two exits and if you went through the back, you entered a whole other world beneath the city where people lived and donors came to hang out at all hours.
The tunnels were set up like a city, so there was a bar, and shops, with a sidewalk going through everything. There was a street, but only one bus that came in and went back out to bring those who wanted a taste of the underbelly into the folds of darkness. When Asher moved into the city, it was buzzing with people, even though it was only three o’clock in the afternoon. Beneath the city, it was perpetually dark and the nighttime never stopped.
Immediately, some women standing in front of a store started to yell at him. “Hey baby, come over here and have a taste.”
These were the lower class of the donors. They stood on the street like hookers pedaling their blood. Often, they were drug addled and gross, so he usually avoided them. He was headed to the place where the elite donors were. They were the upper class of the underworld, the rich girls who liked to come to the dark side to get back at daddy or shed their good girl images. Those were the girls that tasted the best.
He made his way to the lounge they hung out in and walked through the front door. He was surprised the first thing he saw was Lorraine Higgins. This was a girl he had a strange history with and she was a shifter.
“Asher, darling, my father wants you dead, I hear.” She stood to hold her arms out to him. Wearing an evening gown with a slit up the side to her hip, it dipped deep in the front to reveal her very perky breasts. She was gorgeous and dangerous. He moved to her and allowed her to put her arms around him and kiss his cheek.
“Lorraine, you look gorgeous as usual. Yes, it seems somehow I’ve gotten onto Grant’s radar again.”
“Would you like to taste the blood of your enemy,” she said in a sultry voice as she leveled her golden eyes on his.
His fangs shot out without prompting and he moved towards her. She leaned back on the couch and allowed him to kiss her lips licking a fang with her tongue. One of his hands made his way up her thigh and squeezed before he moved to kiss her neck. His fingers moved up and under her dress as he sunk his teeth into her flesh. The blood that shot into his mouth was shifter sweet and half human light. She was a perfect combination of both, thanks to her human mother, and he was in heaven. He let his fingers continue to pleasure her to distract her from the slight pain his fangs were giving. She moaned and moved beneath him until they were both finished then he pulled away both his fangs and his fingers. She leaned over and kissed him long and hard, turning him on.
He would never have Lorraine though. She was strictly a finger bang and a good drink.
“Why did I pop up on his radar, Lorraine. What have I done any differently that I haven’t done for the past several years?”
“You threatened his precious illegitimate son, Jesse,” she whispered. It was obvious she didn’t care for her brother, but he was shocked. He hadn’t picked up shifter on Jesse at all.
“That little shit is a shifter?”
“He’s not. He didn’t get the gene, so he’s purely human, but he works for dear old dad so he probably went crying to him as soon as you said he had to pay alimony. What a little shit he is.” Lorraine’s eyes turned cold and Asher sat back to process the information she’d just given to him.
“Well, that’s just great. Did that wife of his know who he was when she made me go after him?”
“I doubt that very seriously. That woman was kept in the dark about everything. She’s lucky their kids aren’t shifters. They still honestly might be.”
“That will come as a shock, won’t it. Are you good for another round or should I find another donor?”
“No, darling, you know I’m always good for another taste. Take your time with me. I’ll touch you, if you want. Let’s go to a more private location.”
Two hours later, Asher had shockingly finally had Lorraine Higgins twice. She was phenomenal and he was completely satisfied. She had told him it would never happen again so he better drink it all up and enjoy it. He couldn’t help but wonder if her father would be steaming mad when he found out, if he found out. Asher certainly wasn’t going to tell him.
“Where are you going?” Lorraine was naked and standing on her head against the wall. She said it relaxed her after sex.
“I have a meeting with a client. I’ve got to try and find the money to give to your father. A vampire’s work is never done.”
“That’s not cheesy. I’ll be sure to tell father you send your regards.”
Asher shook his head and left the room heading back through the lounge.
It was now after six and it was starting to get full. He made his way back through the tunnels and unlocked his crypt. He found himself hoping Lorraine was kidding about telling her father. He didn’t need to get under that guy’s skin any more than he already had.
He took a quick shower and felt invigorated by the hot water and the blood running through his body. Shifter blood was strong and Lorraine was the queen of the whole lot of them. He would feel good for a while. He just hoped whatever the client needed him to do, it was adventurous and would allow him to use his newfound energy.
The address was on the edge of town right before you got to the woods and he pulled up to a small cottage with one light on. He had two days left to figure out how to get fifty thousand dollars. This job would be five hundred at the most, so he wasn’t really any closer. He knocked on the door and waited. At first, he thought no one was home, but then he heard a slow shuffling coming towards the door. After about five more minutes, the door opened and a tiny old man stood before him.
“Come in, vampire,” he said and gestured for him to follow as he shuffled away again. Asher followed him through the house and into a small kitchen where an equally small old lady was sitting at the table.
“Mr. and Mrs. Long, I presume.”
“No!” The old lady yelled. “Don’t you dare compare me to his whore of a wife! That’s not me.”
“Okay.” Asher was a tiny bit confused but decided just to hear them out.
The little old man sat down and put his hands on the table. “We need you to scare my wife into never coming around again. She’s mean, she doesn’t know how to clean, and I’m leaving her for her best friend. She won’t accept it.”
“We’ll pay you a lot of money,” the little old lady said.
“You understand, that’s not really what I do?” Asher was confused by their request. This had to be the strangest call he’d been on.
“I don’t care what you normally do, kill her for all I care.” The lady stood from the table and walked to lean against the counter.
Somewhere in the back of the house, a frail voice came barely audible. “Henry, sweetheart, do we have company?”
“That’s your wife, isn’t it?” Asher asked completely shocked that these kinds of people existed.
“Don’t let her sweet little voice fool you. She isn’t any better than me.”
The woman was quite hateful and Asher decided he didn’t care for her.
“Go on, here’s your money.” The older man handed him a wad of cash, but didn’t bother getting up from the table.
“You want me to scare her into leaving right now?”
“Yes, I do.” The man wasn’t getting up from the table and the lady was pretty much fixed to one spot.
“How much is this?” Asher looked at all the hundreds in his hands.
“It’s eight thousand dollars. Just do it already, so we can go to bed.”
Asher cursed as he went down the hall. His job as an intimidator usually didn’t include traumatizing old women. This was not what his job was all about. He liked beating up men who deserved it and intimidating women who were taking advantage of people, this was not cool.
He opened the door to the ladies’ room slowly and stepped in.
“Hello,” she said from the shadows.
It was too dark for him to tell if she was in the bed or behind it. She flipped on a light and Asher was stunned to see a beautiful, young woman sitting in a chair next to the bed.
“Wow, what, um. You’re Henry’s wife?”
“Yes, unfortunately I am Henry’s wife. I’m not leaving here, vampire. This was my mother’s house, he moved in with me. Just because he wants to leave me for my best friend. I don’t care.”
“That woman in there is your best friend?”
“Oh no, that’s his sister.”
“So I’m supposed to make you leave,” Asher said completely confused with the whole situation. “They are paying me eight thousand dollars.”
“I’ll pay you ten thousand if you turn your services around on them. Just make them leave my house. He can have his divorce, but I’m not leaving the house. I came into a lot of money when mama died. This little cottage is only one property I own, and the only one I care about keeping.”
Asher thought about it for a minute, which was a little more his speed. He didn’t really want to give the two old people heart attacks when he came after them though. They were terrible people. There was a common misconception that vampires had no compassion. That wasn’t true of him; he had a little. He’d killed his fair share of innocent people there was no mistaking that, but sometimes his conscience did pop up.
