I was a dick, a total dick. After I got her car into Jasper’s bay, I told him I’d be back in a bit. I head to the flower shop and pick up some new flowers. I was pissed she was leaving flowers for Hilary, not even thinking that she might be visiting her family, too.

I don’t get why she leaves Hilary flowers. It’s a nice thing to do, I suppose, but I don’t like it. Why is she doing it? I don’t need her doing it, and I don’t think Hilary would much like it either, if she knew that I have kissed the woman.

I get to the cemetery and walk slowly to the graves. Before leaving the shop, I grabbed the flowers meant for Hilary, and instead of putting them on Hilary’s grave, I put them on her grandfather’s, and place the flowers I bought to replace the ones I ruined on my wife’s headstone.

I trace the letters of her name and sigh. “Miss you, babe.”

Standing back up, I look at the names on the tombstones, and quickly realize it’s more than just Moira’s grandparents buried here. Pain slices through me. Her entire family is buried here, right beside Hilary. Fuck, I’m a dick.

I get back to the shop and get to work.

Angel hired a new girl in the office, since he doesn’t want Eden working anymore. I’m thankful for that, because I wouldn’t be able to continue working here if I had to see that bitch’s face every day. She ruined our lives. I’ll never forgive her for what she has taken from my son. My fists clench thinking of her.  Every time I think of her, I want to hit someone or something, hard.

I’m working on a truck that came in for some minor repairs, when I hear
her
giggling. I clench my jaw, hoping like fuck she doesn’t come and try to talk to me. I grind my teeth, trying to fight the bitter taste just hearing her voice leaves in my mouth.  My hopes are dashed when I see her glance over at me with a timid look. I glare at her, hoping she gets the fuckin’ hint not to come over. Of course, she doesn’t get it. She flinches at my look but ends up walking over.

“Mason,” she says quietly.

I grind my teeth before answering. “Eden,” is all I say back.

“Can we talk? Please? I know you’re angry with me, but...” she starts. Her hair is tucked behind her ear, her face soft, angelic even with her scars. But she is no angel.

Cutting her off, I growl at her, “You fuckin’ bitch. Seriously? Angry at you? No, I’m not. I fuckin’
hate
you.” My anger grows, and I wrap my hand around her neck, bringing my face in close. “You should be the one fuckin’ dead. You shouldn’t get to have your happily ever fuckin’ after. Nothin’ but a selfish fuckin’ bitch.” I push her away, and watch as she stumbles a bit.

“Touch her like that again, bro, I’ll end you,” Angel bellows from behind her, glaring at me.

“Keep her the fuck away from me and we won’t have any problems. Don’t need her in my workplace, fuckin’ up my day.”

Eden drops her eyes at my words. Doesn’t she realize how deep she has cut me? I will never fuckin’ let her back into my life. That bitch is dead to me. A cold snap hits me, causing me to shiver.

His eyes narrow at me, going dark. I know this shit is putting a real strain on our friendship. “What is your problem with her, man?” he asks me, almost looking confused. “She’s been your best friend since we were kids.”

I let out a loud laugh.  Motherfucker must be as dumb as she is. Guess I need to paint a picture. “Best friends? Nah, brother, we ain’t friends at all. She murdered Hilary. She’s the reason everyone’s fuckin’ lives are ruined. I don’t get you either, man. She fucked you over almost as bad as she fucked me over, yet there you are, being tugged around by your fuckin’ dick.” I snarl at him.

I see a muscle tick on his face before he answers. “We all lost Hilary, not just you. It’s been months. Do you think Hilary would want you like this? Huh?” He takes a heated step toward me. Bad idea. I don’t want to fight with him, but I will if he pushes me too far.

“Don’t,” I growl out. “Don’t fuckin’ talk to me about my wife. All that cunt,” I say, pointing to Eden, “had to do was open her mouth years ago. But, oh no, she was too selfish for that shit. It’s her fault Monica and Hilary are dead. Hell, because of your cunt of a woman, Lilly had to lie all the time to Zippo, causin’ a shit load of breakups and all that shit with Kayla. I don’t know how you can all stand to be around her.” My voice is raised, practically yelling at him. Through my yelling, a cold blast hits me again, what the hell? No one else seems to notice it, seems to be just me.

“Man, what the fuck is going on out here? Customers are complaining about people fighting back here,” Zippo says, coming into the garage. “Oh shit.” It dawns on him, obviously, since I’ve gotten drunk with him since Hilary’s death and told him my feelings on Eden. He might not agree with me, but he gets it. He knows what the bitch has done to all of us. He tugs on his beanie, looking apprehensive.

“You have a choice, Angel—her or me. The woman that killed people we loved, cared about, while she lied to us all, or me, your best friend since we were babies.” Now what? What will he say to that?

Angel sighs and shakes his head. “Man, you can’t ask me to choose. I can’t do that.”

I know it isn’t right of me to put him on the spot, but it doesn’t change the way I feel about Eden.

“I’m gonna go,” Eden says, finally speaking up. “For what’s it worth, Mason, I am sorry. I loved Hilary,” she says quietly, tears running down her face as she walks away, her head down in shame or guilt.

Angel grabs her hand and says, “No, Eden is my wife, and you are my friend. We can get through this shit, together.”

I look to Angel. “Looks like I quit.” I toss my rag at him and walk out of the garage. Fuck that. Fuck him. Fuck working with him.

I get to work about ten minutes late, and rush to the staff room to get situated for my shift. Throwing my purse and coat in my locker, I grab my nurse badge and head out to the ER desk.

“Hey, Kimmy,” I greet a fellow nurse. She’s been working here for as long as I have been at least. She was also the one that petitioned to get my ex to leave this hospital after he also tried hitting on her.

“Hey, Moira, it’s busy. You are on duty for bays six through twelve today, and tomorrow it looks like you have rotation up in the maternity ward.” I nod, grabbing the first clipboard and check it over. “That’s number six. She keeps complaining about having blood in her stools, but no matter how many tests we give her, nothing shows up. I’m thinking she just wants the morphine.”

I look at the name and recognize it. “Yeah, I’m pretty sure that’s what is it, too. She’s been in about nine times this month alone, complaining about something or other, wanting morphine for pain. Going to talk with Doctor Raul about her, see about just getting her put out,” I say, taking the clipboard with me.

I continue my day, making my rounds, interrupted often with thoughts of Mason. I can’t help but wonder about him and his son. Are they okay? Why do I care? Because I like him.

I have about twenty minutes left on my shift when Kimmy and a few other nurses make their way over to me at the desk. “Hey, Moira, we’re going for food. You want to join us?”

I don’t have anything else to do, so I agree to go with them.

We wind up at this great little diner that has the best burgers. It isn’t far from the hospital and is inexpensive. Kimmy elbows me in the side as she eats her poutine. “You seeing anyone? My brother is coming down, and asked if I knew any pretty single nurses that could go out to dinner with him. I promise, he is handsome and will take you somewhere nice.”

I smile at her weakly, my stomach clenching as I think of Mason. I wish he’d take me to dinner. “I’m not ready,” I answer tensely.

“Not ready or not interested?” Janie asks, grinning at me.

“What’s with the creepy smile?” Kimmy looks between us. “What are you not telling me?”

“I saw our girl here locking lips with that rough-ass, sex on legs biker a while back. You know, the one who lost his wife,” Janie tells them, sharing my secret.

My face pales; I didn’t think anyone saw us.

“Chill!” Kimmy pokes me again as I shove my burger in my mouth to keep from freaking out.

I chew and swallow too big of a bite, then wash it down quickly with my pop. “I don’t think we should talk about this right now.” I glance over and see Eden, Angel’s wife, picking up food to go. I want to thank her for letting me drive her car, but she is back out the door before I can.

“Was he a good kisser? That man just oozes hot sex!” Kimmy and Jane squeal and giggle at Phaedra’s inquisition.

My cheeks heat, blazing red.

“Oh yeah, he must be. Look at her face!” Kimmy teases.

I get to Mona’s house and walk in, searching her out. “Mona?” I call as I walk into the living room.

I hear sounds of Hunter giggling and Henry and Mona playing with him. Ever since Hilary passed, those two have been together more often than not. In the past month, Henry left the church and has retired. Just last week, I heard his house was up for sale.

I don’t really know what to make of all that. I know he’s trying to be a better man, but I still hate him more than anything. I hate him more than I do Eden. The Trent shit was all his fault. Henry fuckin’ took me under his wing after my mother left when I was a kid. He was a second father to me. He supported Hilary and me, yet he let me believe that Trent and Hil were having an affair. Didn’t say one thing against that.

He is not the man I thought he was, and I don’t think he’ll ever get back there in my eyes.

Mona and Henry look up, Mona giving me a small smile and Henry trying to meet my eyes. “How was he today?” I ask Mona.

“He was great, as usual. He started rolling around, and now he’s everywhere,” Mona says, a huge smile on her face and her eyes lit right up.

Guilt cuts through me; I should have been around, should have seen a first like that.

“He’s also cutting a tooth, so Henry went out and bought some baby teething items for you, in case he starts getting real cranky,” she tells me, picking Hunter up off the floor.

Before she can pass him to me, Henry finally speaks up. “Mason, my boy, can we talk?”

I grind my teeth together. “Call me your boy one more time, and I’ll knock your fuckin’ teeth out.” I snarl at him. I don’t want to hit an old weak man, but I will. Today is not the day for him to be fuckin’ with me.

His face pales, and Mona gives me a chastising look. What the fuck ever. I take my son from her arms and walk out the house to my Jeep to strap him in the car seat.

“Mason,” Henry calls from behind me just as I’m shutting Hunter’s door.

“What don’t you get, old man? I don’t want to fuckin’ talk to you,” I ground out.

“Hilary wouldn’t want this. She held a mean grudge, but do you think she’d want to see you this way?”  Is he joking right now? I can’t believe the shit coming out of his mouth.

I turn around, glaring at him, and he flinches. “What would you know about that, huh? You know nothing about Hilary. You didn’t care about her. You let her down more times than I can count. You lied to me. You lied about everything.”

“Mason, we need to let this go and move on.” He tries placating me. His eyes crinkle. I can see a part of Hilary in him, making me hate him even more.

I let out a sarcastic laugh. “You and Eden are a pair, you know that? Both of you deserve to be put in the fuckin’ ground, not Hilary.” The second I utter those words, my face jerks. It felt like I was just punched in the jaw. I lift my hand to touch my jaw, and it’s freezing cold. I look back to Henry, who doesn’t seem to notice what just happened.

“I wish I could trade places with her. You don’t know how badly I wish I could go back and change everything,” he says brokenly. Anguish sets in across his wrinkled features as he runs a hand through his greying hair.

“Yeah, and now you can’t, so fuck you.” I look up to see Mona standing on her front step. “How could you take this man back, huh? Didn’t he destroy your life enough?” I shake my head as she starts to speak but stops, knowing better.

I stare at her on the porch, remembering the way Hilary would stand there waiting for me to take her out. She was always so excited to get on the back of my Harley. Fuck, I miss that! Her arms curled around me, her head on my shoulder, enjoying the ride.

I don’t bother saying anything else, just move around my Jeep and get into the driver’s seat, peeling out of the driveway, leaving both Henry and Mona standing there, watching me go.

What the fuck is wrong with everyone? No one seems to be on my side. Everyone is all happy and shit with what Eden and Henry did. They’re both happy in their lives. Hell, Eden didn’t even fuckin’ wait to get married until after we knew what was going on with Hilary. Lilly at least waited to see what was going to happen to Hil before she tied the knot. Goes to show the true friendship there.
