Even my mother likes this!

I'm not using anyone. You're all crazy.

“Sometimes, it takes desperate measures to get what you want,”
Zoey says so nonchalantly, then inquires,
“Do you know any guys you went to school with? That maybe bat for the same team?”

Zoey, let me get this straight. You guys want me to ask one of my gay friends to pretend to be with me.
I can’t even believe them right now.

Jacey jumps in. “
No, we want you to ask one of your gay friends to come to the clubhouse with you.”

Why would I do that?
Ohmygod! This gets more and more ridiculous by the second.

“Because you’re going to have to come get me so we can talk about my wedding dress,”
Zoey replies, like it's no big deal, but it is. It so is because she has been putting that poor man off for so long now.

I look around the room to see their smiling faces and I can't help but to grin back.

So you’re finally going to marry Hanger?

“I have my sister back. The only one missing is Chatty, but she isn't coming back, so yeah, I guess I am. I need you to design the dress, so what better way to do it?”

“It wouldn't hurt to have your friend put his arm around you and maybe kiss your cheek,”
my mom contributes to this ridiculous plan.

“Go Mom!”
Zoey says, giving her praise.

“Love it Sophia!”
Jacey joins in.

You guys, this could backfire, then I'll be worse off.
I try to be the realistic one here, and I don’t like this plan at all.

“It won't.”

“Not at all.”

“It'll be fine.”

They all give me reassurance and I don't believe them, but I'll go with it. It can't get worse than watching him with someone else. We pop the cork on the second bottle of wine. Exasperated, I let them know,
I am trusting you guys with this, so let's hope it doesn't blow up in my face.

Zoey comes out with,
“I'm gonna have to have Hanger come get me.”

“Yeah, I'm gonna have Bear come get me too,”
Jacey agrees. I would like to see the guys since I didn't get to earlier.
“You know all the shit I put Bear through. He never gave up on me once. Even when he thought it was a lost cause, he was still there. The love these guys have for us isn't just the regular kind of love, it doesn't just go away over time or let them move on. It is everything more. It's forever, so just think about that, Ever.”
I release the breath I didn't know I was holding when she said everything more. I remember when Writer told me that. Maybe this isn't a lost cause after all.

I tell them
, I want to see all the kids tomorrow. I can't wait to meet my nephew, and you, Jacey, had a little girl.
I'm in awe of how much everything has changed my sister found a great man who loves and takes care of her, along with their three kids, Ava, Harper, and Damien.

Jacey also found a great man that she was so conflicted about, but love prevailed and they have two kids now, Kellen aka Cub and Kelcey. Jacey is no longer a doctor, she now has a recording studio with her first band signed. Where does that leave me? I want everything they have. I want the man, the kids, and the career. Right now though, it’s not looking too good for me.

“Yes, we had a little girl named Kelcey and she is beautiful.”
Which I already knew because Zoey kept me up to date with everyone except Writer, but I let her say it anyway because I love seeing her so happy.

Feeling guilty, I decide to apologize. The alcohol might have something to do with it.
I'm sorry, you guys.

“Sorry for what?”
Zoey asks curiously.

For making this day about me. I should’ve been trying to see everyone and I took you guys away from your families.

“Hey, it’s okay. You were excited to see Writer, then it all went to shit. We understand. Plus, you’re family that we haven’t seen in a year, and it gives us some time away to spend with each other.”
Gotta love my sister for always trying to make me feel better when I feel like complete and utter shit.

“Yeah, besides, you're back now. You have plenty of time to see everyone. The guys can handle the kids for a while,”
Jacey tells me.

Thanks.
I turn back to Zoey and ask
, So, you don't think Chatty is coming back at all? Have you heard from her recently?

The sadness radiates off of her as she responds.
“No, she has no plans to come back. I talk to her every once in a while. I catch her up on everything, and she’s doing well. I miss her so much!”

Jacey doesn't look as sad, but still says,
“I can't believe it’s been two and a half years since she's been gone. I think we all miss her, even the guys.”

“Yeah, it's pretty crazy to think about everything we’ve been through in the last three years,”
Zoey states, while looking beyond all of us.

I can't take it anymore.
Okay, this is getting depressing.

“I'm just glad to have both my babies back. I have to say this: me and your father don't like this path that Writer has been on. He has been hurting himself and everyone around him, but he is such a good boy. He has had a hard life and we all know he is hurting, so be careful, Ever. We love Writer like he is our own son, but he needs to pull it together before you two can move on. I hope he does, because you both love each other so much and I want all of my babies to be happy,”
my mom slowly signs with drowsy eyes.

Mom, I think you are a little drunk,
I inform her.

“Yeah, I am, and now I'm going to bed.”
She stands and stumbles a little before getting her balance. All of our shoulders shake with laughter. We all say our good nights and I love yous before she leaves the room. Zoey and Jacey call their men, bringing this girls’ night to an end.

About half an hour later, Bear and Hanger come walking into the room.

“Hey, City Girl, it's good to see you.”
Hanger gives me that smile of his as I get up and run over to him, throwing my arms around his neck. I pull back, signing excitedly,
It's good to see you too! I missed you guys.

“Good to have you back, City Girl,”
Bear speaks and signs in his matter of fact way.

“Look at you, Bear, signing and shit.”

That gets me a smile from the big lug and laughs from everyone else, as he simply says,
“Crazy Girl is a good teacher.”

Well, I wish everyone was as happy to see me as you guys,
wincing as I sign it.

“Give him time. Crazy Girl, we gotta go. Romeo's watching the kids,”
Hanger informs her as he grabs her arm, pulling her to him and laying a big kiss on her lips.

“He’ll come around. He loves you, we all know it. We gotta go too, Lil Mama. Doc's watching our little ones,”
Bear pipes in.

Jacey stands, going straight into Bear's waiting arms as she says,
“It’s okay, we got a plan for Writer's ass.”

The guys can't do anything but hang their heads and smirk because they know how their women are when they get together drinking.

From Hanger's arms, Zoey says,
“I'm so glad you're back sister, don't forget about tomorrow.”

I won't. I’ll text you.

We all do our goodbyes and after they’re out the door, I shut and lock it behind me. I am exhausted. My room feels like it is a thousand miles away, so I start trekking my way there. I throw myself down on the soft and comfortable bed, then think about Writer until my eyes get heavy and I fall asleep.

PAST

★★★

Do you know how to read lips, Sugar?
Writer asks me while we are sitting in his room. Whenever he thinks the club parties are getting out of hand, he always pulls me away so it can just be us.

No, I could never get the hang of it. It was always just easier for me to use my hands. I tried but I always messed up what people were saying.

I know some words because of me being able to hear before, but if their mouths are moving too fast, I can't keep up.

His reply makes me wonder what it would have been like to be able to hear one day and the next have it gone. I know he lost his hearing when he was twelve. I wonder if it is worse to have it and lose it or to never have had it at all. I think Writer's situation would be worse because I don't know what I am missing because I never had it.

He taps me on my thigh,
You still with me?

Yeah, I'm here, sorry.

So can I show you a couple words?

You can try.

I watch as his mouth moves in the same motion over and over. I start to mimic with my own mouth and trying to sound it out in my head. Why the hell would he be teaching me that? No, that can't be right. I watch him with a look of confusion.

He chuckles.
Why are you looking at me like that?

Because why the hell would you be teaching me olive juice?
I answer, with my brows furrowing and my face scrunching up. I watch as he full on laughs now. I don't mean the throw-your-head-back laugh, I mean the double-over-hold-your-belly kind of laugh. Then he falls over onto the bed, still holding his stomach, and tears have started to come out of the corners of his eyes.

I slap his arms, but start laughing myself, then after we both calm down, he sits up, looking at me. He leans in, giving me a chaste kiss before signing,
Let me see your hand. I wasn't teaching you olive juice, Sugar.

I hold my hand out to him. Writer takes it in his, pushing down my middle and ring fingers towards my palm. He makes sure my pointer finger, pinky and thumb are sticking straight out.

Oh. Oh. Ohmygod. I know what that means!

Writer lifts my hand up between us, my eyes latch onto his, and I search for something, I don't know what, until I see it. He loves me!

When he drops my hand, I ask,
That's what you were trying to teach me?

Writer nods, still watching me, he starts to sign,
I know it's kind of fast. Hell, we have only been together for a short time, but you are it for me, I know it. I love you, Ever. You don't have to say it back.

I do though, Writer, I love you. I have for awhile. You're it for me too.

Really?

Yeah, really. Now, come here and kiss me.

He tackles me just then, kissing the life out of me, and then proceeds to undress me and kiss every inch of my body before making love to me.

WRITER

Waves by Mr. Probz

We park our bikes in the parking lot of the tattoo shop and Hunter walks over to me, signaling he wants my pen and paper. I pull it out of my pocket, hand it to him, and I already knew what was coming as soon as he wanted it.
