Farrah almost felt sorry for her, but then she quickly remembered who she was dealing with and quickly checked herself. Jade may have looked a disheveled, homeless mess, but Farrah was pretty sure she was there to kill and destroy.
“I'm sorry for just poppin' up on you like this at your job and for lying about who I was, but I knew if I told the truth you wouldn't see me,” Jade spoke politely.
“You got a lot of nerve coming to my place of business,” Farrah scoffed.
“Is everything okay?” Camden asked nervously. “Should I call security?”
“Nah, I'm straight. I doubt she's crazy enough to start some stuff in my office. Close the door behind you,” Farrah said, resuming her seat.
She was caught off guard by Jade's impromptu visit, but she would never allow her nemesis to see her sweat. Acting as if she had it all together, Farrah crossed her legs, intertwined her fingers, and said, “How may I help you?”
“I didn't come here to beef wit' you or anything like that—”
“Then why are you here?” Farrah cut her off. “'Cause please believe I ain't got time for no drama and I certainly don't have to time to entertain any games you tryin'a play.”
Jade sucked her teeth and kept her composure.
“Look, honestly, I didn't know where else to go,” she responded, truthfully.
“I'm not following.” Farrah grimaced.
“I don't know if you know, but I recently had a baby girl and it's . . . Mills's.”
“That's to be determined.” Farrah cocked her head to the side.
“And that's the reason why I'm here. For whatever reason, Mills refuses to take the paternity test,” Jade explained.
“Whoa-whoa-whoa-whoa.” Farrah uncrossed her legs and waved her hands. “What do you mean, Mills refuses to take the test? He said you hadn't taken the test.”
“No, ma'am, me and my daughter went in a month ago and got swabbed. Here . . .” Jade dug inside her purse. “I have proof.” She pulled out a piece of paper and set it down onto Farrah's desk.
Farrah picked the paper up and sure enough, Jade had taken the test over a month ago.
“Look, I know that you two are married now and I'm not tryin' to fuck up what y'all got. I just want Mills to take care of his daughter. Having a child has really put things into perspective for me and my main priority is making sure my daughter is taken care of,” Jade said humbly.
“If my memory serves me correctly, weren't you cheatin' on him wit' some NBA player?” Farrah screwed up her face.
Jade swallowed hard.
“Yes, I was, but—”
“So how you know the baby ain't his?” Farrah stopped her again.
Jade didn't even bother to respond. She simply placed a photo onto Farrah's desk and slid it toward her.
“That's why.”
Farrah looked down at the picture and what stared back at her was the perfect mixture of Jade and Mills. A paternity test didn't even need to be done. Anyone with eyes could see that the baby was Mills's. Farrah's entire face filled with tears. Every inch of her wanted to break down and cry, but she couldn't, not while Jade was there. Mustering up as much willpower as she could, Farrah blinked her tears away.
“So what do you want me to do?” she asked Jade, swallowing hard.
“I just want you to talk some sense into him and tell him to do the right thing. I'm not doing this to hurt him or you. I just want the best for my daughter, that's it.”
“Mills is a grown-ass man. I can't make him do anything,” Farrah replied, coldly.
“And that's fine, but at least you know the truth now. I won't take up anymore of your time, Farrah.” Jade turned and left as quickly as she came.
Once she was gone Camden rushed to Farrah's door.
“Is everything all right? I could feel the tension from out there.”
“Yeah, just give me a minute.” Farrah turned around in her chair and faced the window.
“Okay, let me know if you need anything.” Camden closed the door reluctantly.
This was it. The moment Farrah had been anticipating since she said
I do
. Once again, Mills had managed to turn her from a woman of substance into a weak and pathetic fool. Feeling as if she were about to implode, Farrah closed her eyes and squeezed herself tight. With her head down, she rocked back and forth and willed the fire in her heart to stop burning.
Her entire brain was spinning out of control with questions.
What was all of this, a game? Does he get off on lying to me? Why would he put me through this? Why did he marry me, knowing the truth? Did he ever really love me?
she wondered.
No, he couldn't have, because if he did, he would've never done this to me. He would've never destroyed me so easily,
she thought.
Farrah continued to hold herself and rock and back forth. She felt if she stopped rocking she would lose her will to live. What was she supposed to do now? Where was she to go? How would she continue on? The only things she knew for sure was that she wanted Mills to hurt how she was hurting right now. She wanted him to know what it felt like to burn, to not be able to breathe. He never knew what real pain looked like. When Jade threw him to the wolves, she'd been there to save him.
He never had sleepless nights that felt like they were never-ending. He never went days without food in his system because he was too heartbroken to eat and the food made him sick. He never was so lonely he wanted to throw up. She wanted his days to be cold. She wanted his nights to be met with tears of regret. She yearned for him to miss her so much it drove him insane.
Then, all of sudden, her mission was clear. A flip was switched inside of Farrah's head and all of her sadness was numbed. Spinning around, she grabbed her purse and the picture of the baby Jade had so conveniently left behind. On a mission to destroy, Farrah stomped her way out the door and out to her car. She could hear Camden call out for her, but nothing could stop her.
The drive from her office to her destination was short. With her Mercedes placed in park, Farrah hopped out with the picture in hand and walked toward Mills. He had no idea what was about to hit him. There he was, at the site of his new skate and bike park, going over blueprints with the developers. He didn't even notice Farrah approaching him.
“You no-good muthafucka!” she spat, pushing him.
“Farrah, what the fuck?” Mills said, caught off guard.
“I thought you had taken the paternity test? I thought the baby wasn't yours, you lousy, lying bastard!” She pushed him again.
“Mills, what is going on here?” one of the developers asked.
“Just give me a minute, Bob,” Mills pleaded desperately.
“Yeah, give him a second,
Bob
!” Farrah shouted.
“What the fuck is your problem? You actin' like a crazy woman!” Mills looked at Farrah like she was a foreign object.
“If I'm crazy, it's because you made me this way! Why you have to lie to me, Mills? I asked you over and over again and you repeatedly said
no
!” Farrah cried so hard her chest heaved up and down.
“Look at what you've done to us!” Tears dripped from her eyes as she held up the picture of the baby. “Look! She looks just like you!”
Mills wanted to continue to deny the truth, but the look of utter despair on Farrah's face was unbearable.
“I'm sorry.” He hung his head low.
“You're sorry? No, I'm sorry 'cause I believed you! I married you!” Farrah pushed him repeatedly.
“I didn't mean for it to go this far. I was gon' tell you the truth.” Mills tried to explain as cars stopped to watch their altercation.
“Really?” Farrah snapped. “When were you going to tell me the truth, Mills, huh? When I got pregnant or when the baby was born? You ain't shit, nigga, and it pisses me off that I'm just now realizing it! I see why Jade cheated on you! And then you the dumb muthafucka that goes back and fucks the bitch! What the fuck is wrong wit' you? Do you get off on lookin' stupid? Why you couldn't just tell me the baby was yours instead of lying about it like a fuckin' pussy!”
“Pussy?” He looked over at the developers, whose eyes were wide with amazement.
“Mills, I think we're just gonna leave,” Bob announced.
“No, just give me a second!” Mills requested. “Farrah, can we please talk about this at home? You're embarrassing the hell outta me.” Mills clenched his jaw.
“I'm embarrassing
you?
” Farrah said in disbelief. “I know you didn't just say that! I
knooooow
you did not just say that! Nigga, you cheated on me, got a bitch pregnant, kept it a secret, then lied and said the baby wasn't yours when you knew damn well it was, but I'm embarrassing
you?
Nigga, fuck you!” Farrah mushed him in the forehead.
“Like, really go fuck yourself! Fuck yourself wit' a fifty-inch dick until you bleed, muthafucka, 'cause I'm done! You, your slut-bag baby mama and that
Jon and Kate Plus Eight
–lookin'-ass baby of yours can all go fuck yourself! You are—good for nothin'—and I'm not gon' waste any more of my tears on you!” Farrah threw the picture at him and stomped away.
Mills wanted to run after her and plead his case, but he knew that he had no case to plead. Plus, Farrah's temper was on twenty. There was no talking to her. Nothing could calm her down. He would try his best to salvage his meeting and give her a little time to breathe. Prayfully, by the time he got home she would be open and stable enough to talk. But before Mills went home he had a quick run to make.
Chapter 9
Don't know what I'm gonna do,but I just keep on going through changes.
–Eminem, “Going Through Changes”

“Yeah, baby, fuck me, papi!” screamed Lizzy as J.R. pounded in and out of her pussy. “Oh, baby, don't stop! I'm 'bout to cum!” she yelled. “
Aaaaahhh
!” She gave one last scream and her body went completely limp. J.R. usually loved it when she came while he was still inside her, because she would get extra-wet just how he liked it, but tonight, he just couldn't enjoy it as much as he usually did. He pulled out, grabbed a towel, and started to clean himself off.
“You want me to suck you off, babe?” Lizzy asked with a devilish grin on her face.
“Nah, not tonight. I'm good,” J.R. replied without looking up at her. “You can order room service if you want. Just have them put it on my tab. I'm gonna take a shower and head out.”
“It's two o'clock in the morning. Where are you going at this time of night?” she asked.
“Whoa, wait a second. Let me explain something to you, Lizzette. You are not my girl or anything remotely close to that, so don't ever let me catch you questioning me like that again,” J.R. stated. “Just because we fuck from time to time does not mean we are anything more than just that: sex buddies. Do you understand me?” he questioned.
“Damn, J.R., I get it. My bad” she replied as she sucked her teeth. She knew she made him mad when he called her by her full name. He only did that when he was upset with her and he had never talked to her like that before, so that really took her for a loop. For almost a year and a half, they'd been sleeping together. She had known him for three months before they started messing with each other and from the first time it happened, he told her it was just gonna be a physical thing. Lizzy had never been the type to just be somebody's fuck buddy, but from messing with J.R., the good girl in her had completely gone out the window.
The two met when she was hired to be his assistant on a three-month tour. She knew who he was from hearing his music on the radio and reading articles about him. She wasn't the least bit interested in working for him because she figured he was just like the rest of the rappers out there, all about their money, jewelry, bitches, and cars. But while she worked for him, she came to realize how good of a guy he was. He was always nice to his fans and his staff and he carried himself well. When she struck up the nerve to come on to him, he was hesitant because he didn't want to mix business with pleasure. So the second her task of working with him was over, she showed up at his hotel wearing nothing else but a trench coat and red stilettos and it was on from there.
J.R. gave her the best sex she ever had. He was a beast in the bed and she was turned out. Lizzy did anything and everything he asked her to do and for the entire year and a half of their arrangement, she made herself his exclusive sex buddy. He always treated Lizzy nice whenever they would get together. They'd even watched a few movies in bed from time to time. So even though he said they'd never be anything more, deep down, Lizzy hoped one day that would change. After the way he reacted to her tonight, though, she was really thrown off. He wasn't acting like himself at all.
While in the shower, J.R. couldn't stop thinking about the article he'd read about the up- and-coming styling company Glam Squad. His heart skipped a beat when he saw Farrah's picture in the article. He had no idea she was a successful businesswoman when he met her at the club. With this new information, he found himself even more attracted to her. He always wanted a woman who was beautiful, sassy, and independent. And Farrah embodied all those qualities and then some. He felt a little bit guilty that he was daydreaming on a married woman, but the more he tried not to think about her, the more he wanted to get to know her better.
He would never admit it to anyone, but, J.R. was ready to settle down. Sure, it was fun to travel the world and he could sleep with pretty much whoever he wanted, but he was completely over the phase of sleeping around. When his rapping career took off, he had all types of girls throwing themselves at him and he had a crazy sex life. You name it, he did it. But after a few years of threesomes and sleeping with different types of girls, it just didn't do anything for him anymore. It all felt played out. That's why when him and Lizzy became sex friends, he was very satisfied with what they had between each other. She took care of his physical needs and he actually enjoyed her company. He was even considering spending more time with Lizzy and seeing if maybe she was wifey material, up until he met Farrah at the club. Now his mind was on an entirely different path.
He wondered if she had received the flowers he had sent her. He was really hoping Farrah would take him up on the offer and go out to lunch with him. She didn't know yet, but he was about to become her latest client.
BAM! BAM! BAM!
Mills pounded his fist against Jade's door so hard he swore it was going to bleed.
Furious
wasn't even the word to describe how angry he was. He knew that Jade was ruthless, but he never in a million years thought she'd go this far.
“Who is it?” Jade asked.
“Mills,” he replied.
“I'm tellin' you now, Mills, I hope you ain't over here on no bullshit,” Jade said, through the door.
“Nah, I just want to holla at you for a minute.” Mills tried to sound calm.
Jade slowly opened the door, stood back on one leg, and said, “What?”
“Nah, I ain't on no bullshit.” Mills shook his head. “You on some bullshit.” He pointed his finger at her like a gun.
“Oh really, and how is that?” Jade rolled her neck.
“Why you tryin' to ruin my life?”
“Let me explain something to you,” Jade said in an even tone. “I don't give a fuck about your life. All I care about is my daughter—who, by the way, has been sick with colic for the past week. What the fuck did she do to you? I know what I did to you, but what did she do to you?”
“Hold up.” Mills held up his hand. “Nobody told you have to have that baby! I didn't want to have a baby wit' you! You weren't my girl! I mean, Who fucks around and gets pregnant on some one-night shit and then wanna cry about it?” Mills barked, causing the baby to cry.
“Now you mad 'cause you got a baby that you can't afford. Then you think you gon' sweat me and interfere wit' my life! Nah, when I have a baby I wanna have a baby wit' my
wife
,” he stressed.
“Not some dirty-ass bitch that goes around giving her pussy away just 'cuz a nigga said you looked nice. It wasn't even that fuckin' good. If I would'a known you was gone be a pain in my ass, I would've had you sucked my dick to ease the pain!”
Speechless, Jade reared her hand back to slap Mills, only for him to catch her hand in mid-swing and say, “I have had enough for today.” He tossed her hand back.
In the seven years Jade knew Mills they'd argued and said some terrible things to one another. But he'd never been so cutthroat and merciless with his words. She didn't know what was worse: the sound of her daughter screaming or the venom he'd just spat at her. He'd torn her to shreds, but there was no way Jade could let him get away with speaking to her like that without crushing his soul as well.
“Fuck you, nigga! You wasn't saying none a dat when you was all up in my shit eating it! Maybe if you wasn't so strung on my pussy, you woulda kept your dick at home. You pussy-whipped motherfucka. And don't you be talkin' to me like I wasn't shit to you. I been wit' you for six years before I got tired of your wack-ass dick game and moved on to somebody that knew how to lay it down right! Now onto the real situation at hand. Yeah, I had a baby!” She stepped up and got in his face.
“Yo' fuckin' baby, but you know what? You right about one thing, I shoulda never had your baby 'cuz I shoulda known you wasn't gonna help me take care of it. Your daddy ain't never did shit for you and left your mom high and dry. I musta been crazy to think you was gonna be any different!”
Jade knew it was a low blow to bring up Mills's absentee father, but she had to hit him where it hurt.
“You're a raggedy muthafucka! My baby don't need you! You ain't even gotta worry about no paternity test! I don't even want you around her! Now, if you don't get the fuck outta here, I'ma call that dumb-ass, rebound bitch you call yo' wife over here to get you!”
“What?” Mills tuned up his face.
“You heard me! Get the fuck outta here!” She pushed him repeatedly until he was on the bottom step.
Pissed, Jade slammed the door behind her and took a deep breath. Putting her feelings aside, she snapped back into mommy mode and rushed to her baby. With her baby girl tucked securely in her arms, Jade tried her best to ease Jaysin's cries, but nothing worked. Overwhelmed by her daughter's nonstop wailing and the hole in her heart Mills had just put there, Jade began to cry.
She felt utterly helpless. All she had was a half a box of Pampers left and in a day or two she would be out of milk. Life for her couldn't have gotten any worse.
“I'm sorry, baby,” she wept. “I'm gon' figure out a way for us to be okay. Nah, fuck that. We gon' be better than okay. We gon' be good. I'ma do whatever I gotta do to take care of you.”
Unbeknown to Jade, while she tried everything in her power to soothe herself and her weeping baby, Mills had walked back into the apartment. After realizing she hadn't locked the door, he stormed back in to give Jade another piece of his mind, but instead found her distraught with tears. He'd never seen her in such a vulnerable state.

Shhhhhh
.” She bounced Jaysin up and down. “Everything's gonna be all right. I know you don't feel good, but you gotta stop cryin'. Please stop cryin',” she begged. “I can't take this anymore.”
“Let me try,” Mills said from behind, causing Jade to jump.
Face-to-face, she looked inside Mills's eyes and could tell that he genuinely wanted to help.
“She won't stop cryin'.” Jade handed Jaysin over to her father.
Instantly, within a blink of an eye Jaysin stopped crying. Only the sounds of coos filled the room. Stunned, Jade wiped the existing tears from her cheeks.
“How did you get in here?”
“The door wasn't locked,” Mills answered, gazing down at his mini-me.
Even with a tear-stained face Jaysin's beauty shined through. She was simply gorgeous.
“Look, I gotta go to talk to Farrah, but I'll be back.” He handed the baby back to Jade.
“Okay,” she said, nodding, not knowing if he was really telling the truth.
