ABOUT TIM MACWELCH

Tim MacWelch has been an active practitioner of survival and outdoor skills for over 26 years. His love of the outdoors started at a young age while growing up on a farm in the rolling hills of Virginia. Eating wild berries, fishing, and learning about the animals of the forest were all part of country life. Tim became interested in survival skills and woodcraft as an offshoot of backpacking as a teen—out in remote areas, it seemed like a smart plan to learn some skills. The majority of his training has involved testing survival skills and devising new ones, but the biggest leaps forward have occurred as a result of teaching.

Tim’s teaching experiences over the years have been rich and diverse, from hundreds of volunteer instructional hours to founding his own survival school with a busy year-round teaching schedule 18 years ago. He has worked with Boy Scouts, youth groups, summer camps, and adults in all walks of life, as well as providing outdoor skills training for numerous personnel in law enforcement, search and rescue organizations, all branches of the United States Armed Forces, the State Department, and the Department of Justice and some of its agencies. Tim and his wilderness school have been featured on
Good Morning America
and several
National Geographic
programs, and featured in many publications including
Conde Nast Traveler
, the
Washington Post
, and
American Survival Guide
.

Since late 2010, Tim has written hundreds of pieces for
Outdoor Life
and many other publications. Tim’s current and past articles and galleries can be found at

FROM THE AUTHOR

I am immensely grateful to everyone who helped me on the winding trail that led to Andrew McKean’s fateful email: “Interested in writing a survival book?” Thank you to my wife Jennifer, daughters Megan and Kaitlyn, and my mom and dad for being supportive and patient while I hid myself away to write. Thank you to my survival students for giving me the opportunity to teach these skills, and to learn how to put them in a language that is easy to understand. I am also very thankful to my compatriots Wes, Hueston, Rob, Joe, and Ken for training with me, teaching with me, and helping me to push my skills to a higher level. Thank you to Johnny Cabrera for being my radio show producer, which sent me moving in the direction of outdoor-themed media. Thanks to Todd Smith, John Taranto, Alex Robinson, and Andrew McKean—for welcoming me into the
Outdoor Life
family and for giving me the time and guidance to become a better writer. And speaking of writing, I direct my deepest gratitude to Mariah Bear and Bridget Fitzgerald, the editors of this book. Their unending support and encouragement during the book writing process have been amazing. And thank you survival fans and book readers! Without your dedicated interest, I’d be out in the woods, talking to myself.
