“Yeah, but really, I didn’t know it was coming. She hit me
and then I was gone. I better go. James is waiting for me. It was nice talking
to you, Adelaide.”

“I’ll see you around, Sophia, I’m sure.”

“Okay, well, bye,” I said and walked away from Adelaide.

“Do you love him?” Adelaide said as I reached the garden
gate.

“No,” I said and rested my forehead on the gate. “I don’t
know. Possibly. I could.”

I ran back into the hotel, through the lobby and entered
the door across from the ballroom that led to the wine cellar. The walls were
stone, rough and cool and had a dampness that increased as I walked down the
narrow spiral staircase. Metal lanterns were bolted to the wall every few
inches and an amber glow flickered from the lamps.

“James?” I said as I neared the end of the stairs.

“Down here,” he said.

I reached the bottom steps and the walls were lined from
floor to ceiling with rows and rows of wine bottles. There was a fat oak cask
filled to the brim with wine corks and James walked from the shadows holding a
glass filled with red wine.

“Where have you been, Sophia?” he said and swallowed some
wine. “I was about to give up the ghost, so to speak. Have some wine.”

I took the glass from his hand.

“I’m sorry. Guess who I met?”

“I can’t imagine. Try the wine.”

I took a drink and choked. The wine was rich and robust,
but bitter as whiskey.

“Wow,” I said and cleared my throat, “pretty strong.”

“Yes,” he said and took my hand. “So, who caused you to
make me wait?”

“Oh, I met Adelaide,” I said and handed him the wine
glass. “You know, officially.”

“That must have been something. Have some more,” James
said and pushed the glass back into my hand.

James tipped the base of the glass as I raised it to my
lips and a great gush of wine flooded my throat.

“Are you trying to get me drunk?” I said and wiped the
wine off my lips.

“Definitely,” James said and winked.

“Is it okay to be here?” I said and looked around the
large, dark space. “What if someone comes?”

“Oh, it’s fine. The last tour stops at four o’clock. Tell
me about your meeting with Adelaide.”

I told James about my conversation with Adelaide as I
walked around the cellar and brushed off dusty wine labels. When I returned to
the spot I left James, he stood naked in the middle of the room.

“Come closer,” he said.

I walked toward him.

“Stop,” he said. “Take off your dress. Slowly.”

I undid my halter and let my dress fall to the floor.

“Beautiful. Would you like me to tell you what I love
about your body, Sophia?”

“Yes,” I said and fought the urge to cover myself with my
hands.

“Your tits are large, but nice and firm. And your nipples
poke straight out. Those nipples beg to be sucked.”

“Thank you,” I said.

“No, thank you,” he said and smiled. “Turn around. I’m not
finished.”

I turned my back to James and I felt him standing close
behind.

“Now, I love the way your back curves in gently, right
here,” James said and ran his fingertips back and forth across the small of my
back.

I squirmed a bit and I felt James’ warm breath in my ear.

“Feels good?” he said and raked his fingernails up and
down my spine.

“Yes,” I said and shivered.

“You have the most beautiful curves,” he said as he ran
his hands down the sides of my waist. “And your ass...holy Christ, high and
tight, yet at the same time, round and plump. I will worship this ass every
day.”

James knelt on the floor behind my body and his lips
grazed against my lower back and brushed down to my ass. He reached around my
hips and dug his fingertips into the front of my thighs and pressed the flesh
of my ass against his mouth. He nibbled at my skin and my legs trembled. He
moved his hands closer, to the inside of my thighs and slid his fingers up my
damp skin toward my pussy.

“Jesus,” he said, “you’re so wet.”

“Yes,” I said. “You made me this way.”

James stood and brushed my hair aside and kissed my neck.
I pressed my body against his and wiggled my ass back and forth against his
hard cock. I reached behind my back and grabbed it with both hands. It was as
hard and as smooth as marble and I felt the power in its incredible girth.

“What do you want?” James said into my ear as I ran my
hands up and down his rigid cock.

“This,” I said and gripped his cock tightly. “Definitely,
this.”

“And how do you want it?” James said as he ran his hands
down my flat stomach to my pussy. “Do you want me to make love to this wet
pussy or do you want this wet pussy fucked?”

“Fucked. Hard,” I said as James’ fingers worked my clit.

“Yes, fucked hard,” he said. “And whatever my princess
wants, she gets.”

James grabbed a handful of my hair and pushed me toward
the couch.

“On your knees,” he said.

I knelt on the cushion and grabbed the back of the couch.
I poked my ass out and he came up behind me and shoved his hands between my
legs. He rubbed my pussy and as his hand slid back and forth over my wet skin,
my legs shook.

“I’m coming for you, Sophia,” James said and probed the
opening of my pussy with the head of his cock. “I’m coming for you right
fucking now.”

James slammed his cock into my pussy from behind and grabbed
my hips. I gasped and tried to move away. I felt as if he’d split me in two. He
dug his nails into my thighs to prevent me from moving and thrust his hips back
and forth. He dipped his cock inside me all the way to its wide base and
slowly, maddeningly, he backed himself out to the tip.

As I relaxed, I took him with ease. Then he was simply
moving too slow, too gently.

“Harder,” I said and rocked back and forth on my knees.

I met his thrusts and braced my arms against the back of
the couch. James grabbed my hair and snapped my neck back and leaned over me.

“Harder?” James said. “You want more?”

“I want it all,” I said.

James pummeled my pussy with his cock and set off every
nerve inside my body. He filled me with a powerful energy more intense than I
felt when he got me off in the lake.

“More,” I said and screamed.

He dug his fingers into my waist and moaned as he slammed
his cock in and out of my pussy. My nipples rubbed against the velvet of the
couch and the muscles in my stomach contracted as the walls of my pussy clamped
down around James’ cock.

“I will fuck you until I own you, Sophia.”

James reached between my legs and pressed his fingers
together and pulsed them back and forth against my clit.

“And I will own you,” I said as the walls of my pussy contracted
against James’ cock.

James alternated between rubbing my clit back and forth
and spanking it as he fucked me roughly.

“I can feel it, Sophia,” James said as he rubbed my clit
harder and faster.

“Yes,” I said. “Don’t you stop!”

James rubbed my clit faster and I felt the fall begin. A
feather blown from a rooftop, tumbling down toward the ground, but at the same
time, gliding through the air being carried along the ebbs and flows of the
wind currents. I steeled my arms against the sofa and slammed my ass back so I
impaled myself on his cock as I came.

“Fuck,” James said and spanked me sharply on my ass.

I felt James’ cock pumping as he filled me. He grabbed my
hips and lifted me off the sofa and moved my body back and forth over his cock.
He placed me back on the couch and with his cock still inside of me, he lay on
top of my body.

He breathed into my ear and worked his arms around my
waist and rested his hands against my belly. I closed my eyes and we slept on
that couch, knotted together for the entire evening.

I heard the sirens before I was fully awake. I opened my
eyes and James stood in front of me dressed in his suit.

“Good morning,” I said and sat up on the couch. “What time
is it?”

James stared at me.

“What’s wrong?” I said. “That’s not the look of morning
after regret, is it?”

James hung his head.

“James?” I said and stood from the couch.

James picked my dress up off the floor and handed it to
me.

“Tell me,” I said and snatched my dress out of his hand.

“For you,” he said and pointed at the ceiling.

“What’s for me?”

“The sirens, Sophia. I think they found you.”

“By persuading others, we convince ourselves.”

Junius

By the time James and I made our way out of the cellar and
into the lobby, the place was swarming with police officers and guests each
jockeying for a better vantage point. Mr. Conway ran around the lobby like his
pants were on fire and a maid laid out on one of the lobby sofas, had a
paramedic tending to her.

James grabbed my hand and led me through the maze of
people and down the corridor toward my old suite. He stopped short and turned
and I barreled into his chest.

“Perhaps you shouldn’t see,” he said and twisted around
and looked down the corridor. “It’s an awful shock.”

“I have already seen,” I said. “Remember? I spent the
entire night in that room.”

“Yes, but perhaps the beach would be nicer?”

“No, I’m fine. I want to see. I want to make sure they
know what to look for.”

I said and brushed past James toward the room.

“Sophia, stop,” James said and walked toward me. “You
cannot do anything to change the course, do you understand me?”

I looked up at James and nodded.

“No,” he said and chuckled, “say it.”

“I understand,” I said.

James took my hand and kissed me on the lips.

“Good. Good morning, by the way.”

When we arrived at my former honeymoon suite, the door was
blocked by police tape. There was an officer at the door with a clipboard and
everyone who entered or exited the room had to check in with that officer.

I stood next to the officer and looked at the clipboard
and then got right into his face.

“Sophia Pearson, the deceased,” I said, “present!”

“Would you get serious?” James said and laughed.

The officer released the tape in front of the door and
allowed a man in a white coat to enter the room and James and I followed
behind.

“I’d say it’s a little late for a doctor,” I said and
pointed at the man’s bag.

“Coroner,” James said.

“Ah.”

There were ten or twelve officers, some in uniform and
some in suits milling about the living room area of the suite. Photographers
shot pictures of the various messes Nellie and Brandt made when they trashed
room and officers congregated in groups of twos and threes whispering to each
other. Mr. Conway walked into the suite and shook his head.

An officer came out of the bedroom carrying my
identification and held it over his head as if it was a trophy.

“Found it!” he said.

Some of the other officers ran over to him and slapped him
on the back.

“Well, it’s not as if that was bang-up detective work,” I
said. “Nellie and Brandt left it right on the bed at my feet.”

James rubbed his chin and chuckled.

“I’m going to go into the bedroom,” he said. “Want to
come?”

“In a minute. I want to hear what Mr. Conway has to say.”

“Remember, Sophia,” James said.

“Yes, yes,” I said and put my hand on James’ back, “no
interfering.”

James walked into the bedroom and I went and stood beside
Mr. Conway.

Mr. Conway leaned up against the wall and put his head in
his hands as two detectives holding notebooks surrounded him. A female officer
handed Mr. Conway a glass of water and his hand trembled as he took the glass.

As the officers made notes in their books, Mr. Conway
lifted the glass with his shaky hand and dumped most of the water on the floor.
When he finally took a sip, he banged the lip of the glass against his teeth so
hard, I was sure he either chipped the glass or his tooth.

“I told Detective Trenton everything I know about him,
Detective Bonner,” Mr. Conway said after he finished the water remaining in the
glass. “I don’t know what more I can say.”

“But in your opinion, Mr. Conway,” Detective Bonner said,
“since you know him--”

“I do not know him, well, I--”

“Merely a figure of speech, Mr. Conway,” Detective Bonner
said. “We’re just looking for an opinion about him. Do you think he could have
killed this girl?”

“I don’t know,” Mr. Conway said and placed his hand over
his mouth. “I honestly couldn’t say. In my conversations with him, he certainly
did not seem the type.”

The officer who found my identification came up to the
group and handed Detective Trenton the card.

“Nineteen, boss,” the officer said and shook his head.

Detective Trenton looked at my identification.

“Okay, 544 Whittier, Marblehead,” Detective Trenton said
and turned to one of the officers in the living room. “Jessup, go radio Essex
County P.D. and have them send a couple of officers for the notification. These
are some real richies, so make sure you tell them to get it fucking right.”

“Okay, Mr. Conway,” Detective Bonner said, “here’s what’s
going to happen, we’re going to pull the suspect in, question him real fucking
good, if you know what I mean. I personally like him for this. Something about
it clicks.”

The detectives wrote in their notebooks and Mr. Conway
slumped against the wall and took out his handkerchief and wiped his face.

“James,” I said, “come here!”

James ran into the living room. His olive skin looked
ashen.

“That,” he said and pointed toward the bedroom and wiped
his forehead with the sleeve of his jacket, “is not a good scene. Fuck, sealed
in that hot room. Well, you do the math.”
