I had great fun making up all the lotions and potions for
Rainbow Beauty
, with the help of two great books, by beauty-product gurus Gill Farrer-Halls and Elaine Stavert.
I was hugely inspired by the fabulous Lush store in Covent Garden, where I spent MANY happy hours looking at (and testing out!) all the products (thanks, Raine â mwah!!). Of course, I had to buy and try lots of lovely things at home too (SUCH a hard job I have â hee hee!) and I even had a go at making some myself, and got loads of info from professional natural-product maker Andrea Shell to help me (cheers, babes!).
Totnes, where
Peppermint Kiss
is set, is a real (and super-fab) town in Devon, and lots of the locations in the book are really there, like the castle and Vire Island, although there's no actual Rainbow Beauty (aw, shame!). I first discovered it because my friend Jess grew up there â she was also one of the inspirations behind Lucy Jessica Hartley from the Totally Lucy books â thanks for lending me yet another bit of your life, Jess!
As you can tell I fell in love with the place. I have a map on my wall and pictures of key locations, and loads of notes about things like how long it takes to walk between places, and which supermarkets they have. Thanks go to John Giorgi from the Totnes Information Centre too, for all the extra help and info.
Huge thanks go to Matt, as ever, and to Ros, Nicky and Andrea for non-writing-related support in the form of curry nights, child entertainment and loads of laughs!
