“I love you too. And Dad. I know that he’s not my real father, but I don’t think I could have gotten a better one. Uncles and aunts, too. They’re amazing. Especially when we all get together.”

His mom’s radio went off, and she picked it up. She was the sheriff in town, and he knew that she had to go out again.

“I have to run. Will you be able to get home from here?” He told her that he’d call Carter and have him come to get him. “Good. Don’t wait up. Mr. Gross has an intruder again. I will be late.”

Mr. Gross had an intruder weekly. There was never anyone at his house, but Mom went and looked into it every single time he called. He might be crying wolf now, but that didn’t mean that someday the big bad wolf wouldn’t show up for him. Max also knew that there were any number of people watching over him. He was never going to be caught unawares. He called Carter to let him know what was going on.

“All right. How about you and I go and gather up as many of your uncles as I can find and we have dinner together? Misha is in town with me helping to close down the shop, Thomas is on his way home from the castle, and I think that Rider is in town buying groceries. What do you think?” He told him he’d love that. “Good. And so you know, you’re buying.”

“But I’m just a kid.” Carter laughed and told him he was never a kid. “But you know that I have to save my money. I have no job now that you guys have quit yours.”

“Get real, kid. You have as much if not more than all of us. And probably more than my tight-fisted brother Rider has. But you have a point. I’ll pay, but you pick up the tip.” Max said he would. “Okay. Walk down to the offices and be careful. I’ll see you in a few minutes.”

Max closed his phone and started turning off the lights to his building. He felt the vibrations of the people that had been here before him. There were many who had come and worked here, when the building had been a sewing factory for children’s shirts. Max smiled as he turned out the last light and went to the door.

She was there then, the woman from his dreams. Not really there, he supposed, but he could see in her in the glass of the front door. Her long hair was wet this time, her face covered in mud. She wasn’t hurt, but she was tired. Max wanted to reach out to her and tell her it was going to be fine, but she faded away then. As he locked up behind him, all he could think about was how the woman was going to be happy here. And so was he. Max decided that he loved having a family, a big one, and could not wait until they were all mated. It was going to be a great family when they all came together for meals.
