Confidential private papers examined in detail during the research of this and previous studies on the hangmen of England include diaries and official papers relating to Henry A. Pierrepoint; Thomas W. Pierrepoint; Albert Pierrepoint; James, William and John Billington; John Ellis; Robert Baxter; William Willis; Thomas Phillips; Stephen Wade; Harry W. Critchell; Harry B. Allen; Robert L. Stewart; Sydney Dernley; Thomas Cunliffe and Harry Robinson. I am grateful to those who generously allowed me to view their collections.
F
or help in compiling this book I would like to thank the following people: Firstly, Lisa Moore for editing the manuscript and typing up the final drafts; Matthew Spicer for information covering the whole of the book, but in particular data and photographs relating to the work Albert carried out in Germany, for reconciling information on all cases, and for supplying other pictures from his own collection; Tim Leech for a variety of information on all three members of the Pierrepoint family, and the main photographs of Tom; David Martin for tracking down vintage television recordings of Albert Pierrepoint; Stewart McLaughlin for help with photographs from his own collection and information on cases from Wandsworth Prison; Frank McKue for permission to use his personal photographs of Albert Pierrepoint; Robert H. Maxfield for permission to use his photograph of Albert and pony ‘Trio’; Russell Stoddart for obtaining the missing copies of Henry’s memoirs; Tony Homewood and Wilf Gregg for help with a variety of information. The late Syd Dernley (former assistant executioner) supplied me with a wealth of information during the research for earlier projects that led to
this book. For help with data-inputting and proof reading I would like to thank Janet Buckingham. Finally, thanks also to the numerous people who contacted me with information on Albert Pierrepoint following appeals in various newspapers over recent years, but in particular to J. Fred Wright for allowing me to view rare papers in his collection.
This paperback is a revised and slightly updated edition of the original hardback released in 2006. Thank you to everyone who contacted me following the original publication with information on the Pierrepoint family, some of which I used in the companion book to this,
The Executioner’s Bible
