“We were happy, weren't we?”

“I was,” said Sanders, quietly. “Very happy. And you appeared to me to be happy,” he added with his usual caution.

“Did we get on each other's nerves?”

“Not that I noticed. Did I get on your nerves?”

“I don't think so. I don't remember feeling suffocated or intimidated. Not unless I'm repressing the memory. Well—maybe you're right then.”

“About what? For God's sake, Harriet, what are you talking about?”

“Maybe we should try living together. I was just afraid that I was in a pink, romantic haze because of the warm night and the retsina, and that's why it occurred to me. But we were happy then, and I didn't run around feeling nervous and apologetic, did I? And so maybe it is possible. Or at least we could try.”

John Sanders paused for a moment or two. He couldn't remember having suggested anything of the sort for some time; it was not worth mentioning, he decided. “We could,” he said. And kissed her long and hard, causing a major disruption in the flow of pedestrian traffic among late-night shoppers at the corner of Pape and Danforth.
