The Next Morning

The next morning something didn’t feel right. My head was banging and I was all over the place. I reached for my phone and noticed that only one battery bar was left. I had to get to my charger before my phone went completely dead and I missed Denise’s call. When I looked at the screen I saw I five missed calls all from Sugar but none from my girl. What did she want that she had to call me so many times?

Dialing her number I waited for her to answer. But the moment she said hello, I knew something was up. She sounded like she’d been crying and her voice was real hoarse.

“What’s wrong?” I asked sensing fear.

“You gotta come to Wokie’s house! You gotta come now. We all over here waiting on you.”
“Why?! What’s up?”
“You shouldn’t be by yourself, Mad. Please come over.”
“STOP FUCKING AROUND! DID SOMETHING HAPPEN TO MY SISTER?!” I screamed.
“No.”
“Then what is it?”
“We jumped out the cab last night. But we had some African dude this time, Mad. And it wasn’t the same. Shit went wrong.” She paused. “The cab driver’s name was Thabo or something, I think.”
The color felt like it drained from my skin. “Thabo?” I remembered him. He was the driver that chased me awhile back and left his cab in the middle of the street. “What…what happen?”
“Me, Krazy and Kid got away but he caught up with Wokie.”
“And what happened?”
“He…he killed him.”
The room spun around even though I was sitting down. “What you talking about?”
“He’s gone!” She cried. “Wokie’s dead!”

JAYDEN
BOTTOM BITCH BLUES

When Jayden walked through the school’s doors everybody was crying in the hallways. Her neck swiveled from left to right as she tried to find out what was going on. Since she was still kind of new, she wanted to ask one of her classmates but she didn’t have many friends. Judging how people were sobbing uncontrollably, she knew someone died but her only question was who.

Finally seconds after closing her locker, Foxie walks up to her from behind and said, “I’m sorry, girl! Are you okay?”
“Why wouldn’t I be?” She frowned, standing by her locker, her purse draped over her shoulder.
“You don’t know do you?”
“Know what?” Jayden asked searching her eyes for answers. “What happened?”
“Girl the school is going crazy today. Two people were murdered last night. We ain’t never have no shit like this happen before.”
“What…what…what you mean am I okay?” She stuttered.
“I figured you two were close. I’m sorry.”
After her words exited her lips, the first person Jayden thought about was Madjesty. And when the thought entered her mind, her legs failed her and she lost balance.
Foxie, Na Na, and even Gucci helped her up before she hit the floor. They came at the right time. Although Gucci and Jayden were beefing, Gucci put the pettiness aside for the day’s sake.
Jayden thought about how she’d stood her sister up and how Madjesty only wanted to hang out with her, to spend time with her, only for Jayden to always be busy. Money was Jayden’s motive and now she never got the chance to tell her twin how much she loved her.
“I’m sorry,” Na Na said. “I knew you would take it hard but I didn’t think it would be like this. I should’ve waited until you were in class. At least you’d be sitting down.”
“Why didn’t you think I’d take this hard?!” Jayden screamed in her face. Tears poured out of her eyes. “My fucking sister is dead.”
She thought about Jace and how he told her straight up what he would do. And now he’d made good on his promise and her only sister was gone.
“Your sister?” Foxie said inquisitively looking at the other girls. “No,” she said shaking her head realizing her mistake by not providing more information, “that’s not who died.”
“Then who was it?”
“This kid name Wokie who we really don’t know like that. And Xion.” She said. “He was murdered along with his aunt at the house you lived in.” Foxie continued. “We thought you knew because you live there.”
“Xion?” She said looking at the floor. Relieved it wasn’t her sister but upset that his life had been taken she exhaled. Too much was going on. Too much was happening and her mind was in overdrive. “I…I stayed in Concord Manor last night. I didn’t go to that house.”
Katherine Sheer’s antics had saved yet another life. Because if she didn’t demand that Harmony be a more effective mother, Jayden would not have been home last night and could quite possibly be dead right along with Xion and Nadine.
“Good thing you did stay home. It could’ve been you too, girl.” Queen said.
“Where is Passion?” Jayden asked looking at all of them. “Did she make it to her job last night? I set up a client for her.”
They all looked at each other. “After hearing Xion was killed, she said she’s dropping out of school. She said she doesn’t feel safe and that she’s out of the group again. I think she’s serious this time.”
The rage Jayden felt couldn’t be explained. What the fuck is wrong with this bitch? She thought. Why couldn’t she make up her fucking mind?! Why couldn’t she do as she was told? Suddenly Xion’s death seemed to be the least of her worries. This time shit was different. She would find Passion right away. But first she’d have to visit an old friend.
