ACKNOWLEDGMENTS.

A
BOOK OF THIS MAGNITUDE
requires the help and support of many individuals and I have been blessed by being aided by the very best. It was my good fortune to have the gracious assistance of Russell Potter of Rhode Island College, whose guidance with the artwork proved invaluable. His marvelous foreword to this book proves once again that he is among the most perceptive and articulate of all Arctic experts.

I owe a special debt of gratitude to Sterling Publishing's Vice President and Editorial Director Michael Fragnito. Thanks, Michael, for recognizing the importance of adding a vital but hitherto neglected dimension to one of the world's most fascinating sagas. I am also indebted to a host of other accomplished professionals at Sterling, including: Charles Nurnberg, Publisher and CEO, Marcus Leaver, Jason Prince, Jeremy Nurnberg, Leigh Ann Ambrosi, Kate Rados, Karen Nelson, Elizabeth Mihaltse, Marilyn Kretzer, Rena Kornbluh, Rebecca Maines, Pip Tannenbaum, Shelley Giblin, Catherine Martin, Kristin McGrath, Chrissy Kwasnik, and Chantal Flavien. I have also benefitted from the contributions of the staff of Barnes & Noble, particularly Bob Wiertrak, Sallye Leventhal, David Achar, and Chuck Bloodgood.

I am most appreciative of what three highly talented individuals have brought to this book—Russell Hassell for his most appealing interior design; Amy King for her arresting jacket design; and Nick Springer for his beautiful maps. I also wish to thank Laura Case, Paula Schlosser, Adam Weiss, and Pam Anderson at Netpub for their help with the bound galley.

Very special thanks are due the following dedicated experts who provided assistance in the research and acquisition of illustrations: Sandy Johnson, Alaska State Library; Scott Currier; Paul Frecker; Kitty Kelley; Bill Peterson, Louisa Watrous, and Amy German at the Mystic Seaport Museum; Joanna Murray, National Library of Australia; Isabel Fernandez, National Library and Archives of Canada; Jeremy Mitchell, David Taylor, Doug McCarthy, and William Duguid at the National Maritime Museum; Matthew Bailey, National Portrait Gallery; Edward Baker, New London Historical Society; Sheila Carleton and Alan Walker at the Toronto Public Library; Gilbert Gonzalez, Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center; Perry Willett, University of Michigan Library; and Harmony Haskins, White House Historical Society.

As always I am deeply indebted to my wife Carol Weiss Sandler who not only contributed her considerable research skills, but once again accommodated to the schedule of a workaholic husband.

Finally, this book could not have been written without the continual guidance and invaluable contributions of Barbara Berger. Barbara, all is forgiven for the outragous schedule, the weekend and late-evening emails and calls, and the Columbo-like “just one more things.” Your superlative editing, your skill and perserverence in picture selection, and, most important, your dedication and passion for excellence have been an inspiration.

NOTE:
Image depicts Lieut. John Powles Cheyne's three-balloon North Pole scheme of the 1870s (Cheyne was an officer on two Franklin search expeditions in 1850s). These balloons are larger in scale than the search balloons used in Franklin search, although Cheyne was inspired by them.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR.

I
AM A
PASSIONATE TENNIS PLAYER
, an avid movie-goer, and a lifelong, dedicated follower of the Boston Red Sox, an avocation which, until the miracle of 2004, threatened both my health and my mental stability. More than anything else, however, I love to uncover important but neglected stories in the human experience, particularly if they involve unimaginable heroism and surprising resuts. That is why researching and writing the saga of the
Resolute
has been such a joy. I feel extremely privileged to have had the opportunity to tell it.
