Quickly though, Jen’s rampage of thoughts froze to a halt as Jen stood in the shadows watching Shane start to undo his belt and start on the buttons of his jeans. Jen could now see the wear the day had put on Shane as he winced a bit from his obviously sore and tired muscles. How could she feel pity for this rude and cocky guy? For some reason, while she was seeing him there she couldn’t help but want to just go over and give him a back rub to help sooth his aching muscles. Still not really sure what she should do though she just stood back and continued watching.
It really looked like the day had taken it out of him. Jen didn’t notice this when they were out on the range, and she wondered what she looked like herself out there for a moment. With his jeans unbuttoned revealing his white boxer shorts underneath Shane sat down and flexed his toned arms as he struggled with his boots and socks. After they were tossed aside he then stood up, slid his belt out of the loops of his jeans and slid his pants and boxers down as the steam from the shower continued to fill the room.
In the corner, Jen, without thinking anymore about her questions or worries started taking off her own clothes as Shane kicked his jeans to the side. Now fully naked he was showing the tan line that started at his waist and continued on down the defined grooves of his pelvis that framed the reality of that section of Shane Jen had imagined so many times before. She felt herself pulled into one of those fantasies, doing in reality what she had imagined she would in this situation, as she pulled down her own jeans and panties, pulled her t-shirt off, took off her bra, and stood there naked in the shadows letting everything drift away as she knew there was now no stopping and nothing she could do but give into her desire. She stood there a few moments longer as Shane stepped towards the streaming water. He waited a few more moments standing there naked with just his hand under the water stream testing the temperature. If another worker would have been caught with the shower running so long there probably would have been hell to pay. It would have been called wasteful and gluttonous to watch so much water go down the drain just to have steam roll over one's body, which was probably why Shane was showering so late. But Jen didn't mind because Shane had earned it. He'd earned every bit of steam, and every drop of water, that the shower had to offer. That was how Jen really felt about it now as she was watching him. She knew how hard he worked every day for the ranch, how today wasn't just his one good day, that today was normal for Shane except for probably the kiss they had shared. He always gave it his all, as if he had something to prove to the world.
Jen watched some of the life return to Shane's face as he stood in the shower and soaked in the soothing warm water letting it run over his face, through his hair, over his toned back, his strong and powerful shoulders and chest, his rippled abs, and over his thickening manhood, obviously tapping into the erotic energy that was filling the room at that moment. Jen, not being able to stand to watch any longer stepped out of the shadows, slowly slid her arms around him and kissed the back of his neck now working from instinct. Shane put his arms over hers not shocked or surprised she was there, which explained how his body was reacting as Jen gazed at his naked body in the shower. It was a sweet moment to share together, something that seemed to make nothing else in the world matter. She was glad that Shane was being so sweet about everything, as they began kissing and touching each other.
There were so many reasons this was completely crazy for Shane as well. There was the fact that she was the daughter of the ranch owner. That was something that a lot of people took issue with. It just wasn't the smartest thing to do, considering how badly the outcome could backfire on the person if they had a bad falling out. The way that they had to work together could also make things more complicated. It just wasn't the best idea in the world, and in reality Shane didn’t need Jen for sex or anything. Even if he didn’t get the dates he did he could go into town with a little bit of money in his pocket and buy some pussy for cheap. A lot of the men did it, and Jen expected, given the type of person Shane was, he was no different. All these things though were distant sounds to the streaming water running over the two naked bodies embracing each other and kissing as the steam billowed through the room.
As Jen pressed her lips against his, playfully biting his lower lip before going in for a long, deep kiss, she could think of nothing else but his body, his large stiffening rod and her own heat and desire as their tongues started playing and teasing each other and their kissing was able to become more frantic than before by the stream that day. Soon Shane’s hand was groping her breast while the other was sliding down her body tracing the curve of her hip. As he started touching and massaging her where she wanted it most Jen grabbed Shane where his desire was showing the most. The two of them stayed like this, stroking each other, their bodies almost heaving feeling the intense pleasure of each other’s attention until, thankfully to Jen, Shane could not take it any longer and hoisted Jen up off the ground. With the tile wall of the shower, the strength of Shane’s toned and muscular arms, and the grip of Jen’s thighs that were wrapped around him Jen’s sex was perfectly positioned and she slowly lowered herself onto Shane’s pulsing manhood. The pleasure and relief was immediate as they slid onto and into each other.
Jen had never made love like this, both in a physical sense and an emotional sense. It was passionate and full of vigor. Shane was a great lover, steady to the rhythms of her body. It was similar to how they silently worked together on the range that day. He was always kissing her and grasping her tenderly just at the moment she wanted to feel more contact. If Shane was exhausted from the day he certainly didn’t show it. Letting Shane take all control he eventually lowered her down and then took her from behind as Jen lost all control for what felt like the hundredth time. She stayed totally lost in ecstasy as he thrust away and reached his own climax with the moans of both of them echoing off the walls of the shower room, as the hot water started to run out and turn lukewarm. They slowed, and then stopped as the steam continued to fill the room. Jen had never felt better in her life having finally fulfilled this crazily persistent desire. She stood up and leaned back against the wall of the shower and stared at Shane and they both moved toward each other and kissed like they might never see each other again.
They, of course, did see each other again, but to everyone else around them it could seem like nothing was different. After they came back to earth that night in the shower, they both seemed to feel light. At least Jen sure noticed that she did. Jen laughed as Shane awkwardly tried to give her a speech about not wanting to get into a relationship. It was strange to Jen but as the intense connection she had just felt with Shane started to drift away she was surprised to find that she wasn’t keen on the idea of rushing headlong into some kind of relationship while they worked together either. It didn’t take any long drawn out conversation afterwards to figure out what this meant for them. In fact, by the time they were both dried and dressed again they both knew where they stood, and having just felt a release Jen convinced herself she could let it all go and simply see Shane as a bad boy lover she could put in her past. Jen had finally put that desire to rest and now that she had finally had had him she felt relieved and she let her logical worries about Shane take over and she dropped any ideas she might have had about being with him. Jen though made a mental note that if this desire was to creep up again that hopefully Shane would be there to help her take care of that.
All of a sudden, Shane wasn't high up on a pedestal for her anymore. He was down on the earth that she walked on. Not that she didn't find him extremely attractive anymore, but it was in perspective now. It was funny how sex could do that, or the opposite. She was glad that sex had put Shane into a more proper light for her, instead of inflating him up in her mind. After all, Shane couldn’t possibly be “the one”. As hot and sexy as he was he was still just a cocky womanizing ranch hand with a ugly past and a chip on his shoulder. At least that’s what Jen told herself.
For the first few days Jen felt free, but in a short time every few days or so she found herself walking slowly past the shower hut late at night listening if she could catch the sound of the shower running. Eight days after that one encounter she heard the water and checked the latch on the door, but just before it clicked she heard footsteps behind her and quickly ran off to her small house before anyone saw her lurking outside the men’s shower hut. One night she could even swear someone was watching her through her window one night as she was washing her dishes. When she finally gave into the feeling and went outside there was no one around and no one answered her calls. That was the night she tried the door and ran away when she heard footsteps. The days continued on like this and Jen could feel herself more urgently wish to re-live that evening in the shower house with Shane. It was just physical though was what she would tell herself every time she thought about taking a walk by the showers late at night.
Jen wasn’t really expecting to feel as excited as she was when her father called her in to tell her one of the herds had been sold. It wasn’t so much the sale of the herd that had her excited as it was the fact that he asked her to go with Shane to drive them to the railway station to deliver them and collect the payment. Jen’s father usually went on these trips while she felt delighted by the trust her father was placing in her, but was giddy with excitement from the knowledge that it would be a full day trip to town and she would be spending that night in the same hotel as Shane without any other prying eyes around them.
~Troubling Reality~
The night before they left a thought crept up that Jen was shocked wasn’t there before. Jen was watching a little T.V. when a diaper commercial came on. As much as she liked to think that she was more mindful than most people, she didn't realize that she'd missed her period until that moment. It was more than likely three weeks after the fact. At first, she was frantic and tried to think back to the period that must have happened, because there was no way that she could actually be pregnant. It just wasn't possible. It would ruin everything. There would be no way she could continue to ride horses or work on her father's ranch if she was carrying a child. But what else could she do? Have an abortion? It was the only option, she figured, but the nearest clinic was a long way away. It would probably take at least a one day drive to the clinic, then having the procedure done, then staying the night, then a day to return. There was no way that she could be gone that long from the ranch without her father or anyone else really questioning what she was doing. She didn't even want to start thinking about what the rest of the people she worked with might think about her deciding to abort the baby instead of have it. People around the ranch tended to pretend to be religious. But none of the men who would judge her could get pregnant or ever deal with something like this. In fact, Jen guessed, most of them had actually left a child somewhere instead of staying to raise it. That seemed to be a pretty common theme among the ranch hands, she realized as she thought about it making Jen feel even more angry and frustrated at her situation.
Jen’s mind rushed even faster through all kinds of scenarios and issues and ran through small imaginary snapshots of what her life would be like being pregnant and having a child. For a moment though, one brief image that flashed in her mind of Shane smiling and holding a brand new baby in his arms, but as her shocked and worried mind moved on at a frantic pace the smiling face of Shane soon turned into anger and disgust, and that beautiful baby boy disappeared entirely.
Shane was a nice guy that night they made love, but every other time he was the bad boy type, the quiet loner. Although Jen hadn’t seen him with any other girls since that night she wouldn’t be surprised if he had gone on a few dates or maybe took one to that spot in the woods by the ranch house. He wouldn't want to keep the baby. That wasn't his style. There wouldn't be anyway either of them would be able to continue their lives with a child in it, and that was just the bottom line. “Maybe that was a good thing?” Jen briefly thought, but then ran through the scenario of telling Shane that she was pregnant and imagined the look of fear or disdain on his face. Worse yet, the usual cold brush-off Shane had started to use again as his standard reaction to her played out in her mind over and over again. The worse thing that could happen was Shane coldly shrugging off the whole situation leaving Jen to deal with it alone. Not even caring or having the slightest sense of responsibility to help her deal with what was happening. With every possible terrible outcome running through her mind Jen still couldn’t imagine not telling Shane. In the end, that was the only thing she was sure she should do.
Jen had a silent breakfast alone in her small house before the sun or anyone else was awake on the ranch. She knew she needed more sleep for the day ahead but she also knew that it didn’t matter, she wouldn’t sleep at all anyways if she tried. She remembered late that night that she had some pregnancy tests under the sink in her bathroom from one time a few years ago, now completely forgotten about in the past, when she was also worried she might be pregnant. Jen remembered feeling a similar sickness and worry and frantically taking the forty-five minute drive to town and buying three pregnancy tests for some reason. Thankfully, that time, one was enough to settle the issue. She wasn’t so lucky last night with the first test. She sipped on her tea as the egg timer rang and went back into the bathroom to check a second pregnancy test. It too told her she already knew, and the final hope that this was a dream and all not actually real and happening was lost.
The first time Jen saw Shane that day she was just in the middle of saddling her horse and he walked in the stable to do the same. As usual, he said nothing to her until she broke the silence.
“Morning”, she said.
“Yup, it sure is”, he replied sarcastically.
Apparently, Shane is not the easiest to get along with in the morning, and Jen paused and focused as hard as she could on keeping her emotions in check in that moment with barely any sleep and the heavy thoughts that were in her mind.
They continued prepping their horses and rode off just as the sun was cracking the horizon and the farm was covered with grey. Jen’s father waved to them through the window with his cup of coffee in his hand, and Jen did her best to smile and wave goodbye. She had never, not even last night, felt more alone in her situation than she did just then. She turned away from the family home and rode off ahead of Shane who was just about to saddle up. Jen rode harder as some tears started forming in her eyes that made the cold grey morning feel even colder on her cheeks.
Jen got to the herd first and waited for at least ten minutes before she heard the sound of pounding hooves from Shane’s horse over the sounds of the cattle. Jen rode hard thinking that Shane probably wouldn’t be able to catch her that morning even if he tried. Jen knew she needed that alone time on her horse to gather herself.
Like before, Shane and her worked silently in perfect unison. It was effortless and natural to them to be working together like this and Jen wondered why being with Shane wasn’t always like this. She also wondered if this would be what it would be like if they had another job to do together, like raise a child. The day moved on and like the day before it became hotter and hotter and the layers of dust and dirt started building on Jen and Shane’s clothes and skin. Unlike last time though, Jen was more than happy to not have any breaks and be able to fully throw herself into the task at hand which was to get the herd to the railway station. Jen barely noticed the dust and heat this time, and before she knew it the late afternoon heat started to cool and the railway station came into view. The two of them drove the herd through the gate into the pen to be loaded onto railway cars as expertly as before. Like they had a remote control for the herd and they were both of the same mind. Jen went inside to sign the necessary papers, and came out with the job now done to see Shane walking and leading his horse toward the small town by the railway station they would be spending the night in. The same golden glow was starting to take over everything and with the confidence of having finished this important job for the family ranch for the the first time she mounted her horse spurred it next to the slowly walking Shane. Immediately, Jen started talking without any specific plan as to what she was going to say.
“Shane, I, uh, have something I need to tell you,” she said. “But before I do I want you to know that I'm thinking about this objectively and that I haven't lost my mind and think that we'll be raising a kid on my say so. And I have no idea really who you are, and that one night we had together was great and all and I hoped we could do something like that again, and maybe I was thinking tonight, but anyways I don’t know how to tell you this, but I’m pregnant.”
Shane froze like he had just seen a rattlesnake or something. Jen realized by jumping in the way she had that she probably scared Shane to death. He turned white and opened his mouth like a fish gasping for breath with no sounds coming out. Jen watched him turn colour, wondering how it was possible for him to have been so white one second, then completely red the next. She stood their silently watching him process what she had just dropped on him, and started running through all the terrible things she imagined him saying and doing the night before.
From the looks of him Shane was dying just from the thought of having a child. Having a regular color come back to his face he looked at Jen with a mixture of horror and wonder. Jen wasn't sure that she blamed him, and thought that that’s what she must have looked like in bed the night before when the results of that first pregnancy test were seen.
Still silent and frozen Jen fidgeted with her reins. Who would want to raise a kid with someone who just rode up to them and blurted out that they'd made a child in the bath house? So they sat and looked at the sunset while the cattle grazed in the distance behind the gate and fence they drove them all day to. The feeling of pride at having finished such an important job for her father and the family ranch was still there, which helped her straighten up a bit on her horse and say “Well?” to break the now way too long silence.
With the sun melting into the horizon of the distant mountain crags, the golden yellow was turning into the red of autumn leaves, before it became a brilliant flaring dying of an ember as it sank below the crags and out of sight. Jen wondered if any of this desert landscape was helping Shane think straight or if it was all just throwing him off, making him wonder how in the world she could just dump it all on him just like that, in a few sentences, tell him that they'd potentially made something huge together, but it was still, physically, so small at the moment.
“I, uh, I guess I . . .” Shane started and trailed off. “I think what I'm trying to say is that I think we could make it. As a couple. And that maybe we could raise a kid the right way. You know what I'm saying. I just think it would be a lot of work and I know that maybe it's hard to see yourself committing to something like that when I haven't really given you any reason to even think of me as boyfriend material.”
It was Jen's turn to be thunderstruck. This was not the kind of answer that she expected. Although it wasn't that she didn't like it at all, the thought of both of them settling down enough to create a home wasn't something that crossed her mind without huge pangs of anxiety about what could go wrong. Fantasising about all the good feelings and emotions is one thing, taking the step in reality was entirely another, and Jen couldn’t really know if Shane was serious by how he was talking. It most likely was just the first thing he could think of saying under the initial shock of being told they had started a life by simply making love once in the shower. Jen however started going down that line of reasoning and started wondering if he actually thought that they could make it together, really make it, and if he did, did she?
Now that she thought about it maybe it was a thing that could be true, be real. Maybe they could settle down on the ranch and raise a family. It wouldn't be that hard, considering that people did stuff like that all the time. But on the other hand, it would also be one of the hardest things they could ever do. The amount of trust they would have to put into each other was amazing. It was a trust that Shane evidently had for her in that moment to even say the words he was saying. Jen didn't think that she had the same ability to just immediately trust Shane, or maybe Shane’s trust wasn’t so immediate and was part of some feelings he had always held for her.
Whatever the case was, Jen didn’t expected him to answer in such a positive way, if you could call it that, so it was her turn to sit in stunned silence while Shane sat in torture waiting for a reply from her. Maybe she should wait and think about it. The sun was now almost gone and a grey hue just like the morning when they rode out from the ranch took over. They had been standing there and managed only a few words between them for longer than either of them had realized, and without even checking with each other they both came to the conclusion that talking about this was not going to happen anytime tonight so they both took a long breath, smiled and shrugged. Jen dismounted and started leading her horse alongside Shane and his, both of them slowing making their way to the lights of the town that were starting to spring up in the dying light.
When they got to the town they both left the horses at the stable that rented space for the ranchers and cowboys who still did things the old fashioned way like Jen’s family ranch did. There were still a few of these ranches in in the area. Jen and Shane then walked to the only hotel in town. It was actually just a motel on the side of the highway but was still clean though and had a bath and a bed. After having the past few days that Jen had, it was all she really needed. As they walked up to the hotel Jen remembered with a shock that she had only reserved one room, with only one bed. She had made the reservation a while back she thought she was going to find out what it would be like having sex with Shane on a bed. Deciding to just tell Shane Jen stopped and turned to him.
“Look Shane. It’s been a pretty crazy few days, and I have to admit I was looking forward to repeating our little romp in the shower a few weeks ago”. Shane turned a little red, smirked and nodded like he was thinking about it too before this point. “I don’t think I can though, not now with all this stuff running through my mind”, she continued on. I think I need some time alone to process everything right now so I’m gonna get another room for myself, Okay?”
Shane looked a little relieved himself at that thought and said that she was probably right. When they got to the front desk though the old motel owner who himself was dressed in cowboy attire just like Jen and Shane told them they were “all full up.”
Without even sounding the least bit disappointed Shane picked up his pack and bedroll and said, “Well looks like I get to sleep under the stars tonight,” and turned to walk out the door before Jen could get over herself and tell him it was going to be fine and they could share the room. She quickly grabbed the key from the owner and ran after Shane. He was standing just standing in the parking lot looking around trying to figure out where the best place would be to set up camp for the night. “Don’t be an idiot Shane,” said Jen, “we can be grownups and share the room tonight.”
