Chapter One

STELLA

I’m in a bad mood.  That idiot ‘Mr. Roosevelt’ is giving me
a hard time.  Committee vote?  What vote?  They will have to prove that their
stupid committee has the legal ground to expel a student for having a
relationship with her stepbrother.

But honestly, I’m not sure if the law
is
on our
side.  As I know, some States still have silly laws today.  For example, in
Paulding, Ohio, cops are allowed to bite a dog to calm it down.  Can you
believe that?

Maybe I should get some legal advice?  But that must cost way
more than I can afford.  And what am I going to say to the lawyer?  Tell him
that I fucked my stepbrother and got pregnant?
No way.

I spend the whole afternoon flipping out in bed.

“I’m back!” Colton comes in with a big smile.  “Hey, you
feel bad again?”

“Yeah.”  I look at him miserably. How am I supposed to tell
him?

“Okay, you take a rest and I’ll do the cooking.”  Soon, the
food is on the table.

“I’m not hungry.” I murmur.

“Are you sure, Stella?” He sits down beside me.  “You look
so pale.  What happened?  Should we go to the hospital?”

I suck my lips, thinking hard.

“Um, Stella, if you’re worried about anything at all, you
have to tell me, okay?”

I begin to sob, and the events of the afternoon spill out of
me, all the while taking huge gulps of air and hiccupping at the same time.

“That bastard, I’m going to punch his teeth out.” Colton’s
eyes bulge.

“No use to be angry, Colton.  He just represented that
stupid committee.”

“You’re right, Stella.  But they can’t hurt us a bit.”

“Hope so.  But I’m not so sure.”

“You mean legal wise?” He chuckles.

“Yeah.”

“I don’t think there is law that dumb.  Don’t forget that this
is America.”

“But you never know.” I’m so worried.

“We can find out, right?”

“Can we afford a lawyer?  They will rip us off.”

“Shit!” Colton paces back and forth.  After a while he turns
to me, his eyes brighten.  “Why don’t we Google it?”

“Colton, you’re so smart!” Relief washes over me, and suddenly
I’m famished.  “Let’s eat first.”

We finish the meal in just a few minutes.  “I’ll do the
dishes and you search look it up.” I smile.

“Let me do the dishes.”  He stands in front of the sink,
whistling.  Soon, he comes back.  “Let’s check it out.  I bet those assholes
are totally
wrong
.”

“I believe so.” I smile.

We Google for almost an hour and a half and couldn’t find
any Federal or State laws that say a relationship between stepsiblings is
illegal.  We do, however, see a ton of discussions on Yahoo forums on the
morality of this relationship.  It seems that parents tend to be pretty upset
once they find out.

“What about our parents?” I’m getting worried again.

“Shit.  I don’t know.”  He scratches his head.  “But they
will find out anyway.  So it doesn’t really matter.”

“You mean…”

“If they ask, then we will be honest… Oops.”  He fetches his
cellphone from the pocket and swipes the screen.  “Shit!  It’s my dad!” He
looks at me.

“Answer the call.” I whisper, as if his dad can hear our
conversation.

“What if he asks about us?” He whispers.

I think for a moment or two.  “I don’t know.” I shake my
head.

“Then I’m not answering the call.” He tosses the phone back
to his pocket.

Soon, the phone rings again.  He’s eyes grows bigger this
time.  “My dad
again
.  We’re
dead
, Stella.”

I think hard and then smile, “You want to be honest with our
parents, right?  Why don’t you tell him the truth if he asks.”

“He is going to kill me.  I swear he will!”

“Tell him it was me who…”

“Shit, no, I’m not doing it.” He stops me right away.

The phone has stopped ringing.

“Holy fuck!  What am I going to do now?” He looks at the
screen and planting his face in his palms.

“Colton, I think you should call back.” I say quietly.

“Why?”

“You don’t want to make your dad worry, right?”

“Right, you’re so freaking right, Stella.  If I don’t call
back, Dad’s going to worry.”  He thinks for a few moments and then asks, “What
if…”

“Tell the truth.” I smile.

“Okay.” His teeth cut deep into his lower lip, his thumb
reaching for the green call button on his phone.

COLTON

The phone is ringing.  My stomach is twisting into knots.
Heck, I never imagined that I would be scared of anything.  But damn, making
this phone call…it’s scaring the shit out of me.

I’m honestly not sure what to tell him.  I know my dad.  The
moment he finds out what happened between Stella and me, anything can happen.
I mean
anything

My only hope is that he won’t pick up the phone.  How many times
has this stupid phone ringed so far?  Five, or six?  I’m going to wait for one
more ring and then  hang…

“Hey, Colton?”

Fuck.   I’m doomed.

“Hi, Dad?”  I’m trying so hard to put up a smile. I received
some cold-call training for my summer job a while ago, and I know that my voice
is going to be rough if I don’t smile.

“Colton, I’m glad you called back.”

“Sorry, Dad. I was doing the dishes.”

“Doing dishes?  How come you don’t ever do that at home?”

“See, Dad, we…” Oops.  But it’s too late.  I can tell that Stella
is panicking.
Sorry.
  I mouth her.

“You and…” Dad’s voice is definitely curious.

“Yeah, me and Stella…” Holy shit.  Big mistake.

Stella’s cheeks turn pale.  She waves her hands and mouths
me something. But I can’t understand.

“What did you say?” I look at her.

“Um, oh, I’m just wondering if you’re having a party or
something.” It’s Dad’s voice.

Now I understand what Stella was trying to tell me:
friends
.

“Ah-yeah, right, Dad.  We got friends here.  So Stella and
I…” I have to pay close attention to Stella because she is mouthing me
something again.  After a few moments, I get her message:
stupid
.

“So you and Stella are together, huh?”  Dad asks again.

Holy shit!  I can’t believe that I’m making this stupid
phone call.

“Look, I’m glad you are getting along well.  Go have fun
with your friends. I just wanted to make sure you hadn’t starved to death. ”

“Thank you, Dad, anything else?”  Oops!  I’m asking for
trouble.  What’s wrong with me today?  I hate myself.

Chapter Two

COLTON

Stella is mouthing me more words now.  I couldn’t tell for
sure, but I think at least two of those words were:
stupid
and
fuck

I toss her a big kiss but she returns my gesture of love with more words in the
same vein.

“Yeah, I almost forgot why I was making this call.  We sent
you a package a while back, but it got returned.  Did you change your address?”

I cover the phone.  “Stella, did we change our address?”

“Colton, you’re a total dumbass.
Yes
.  But you
can’t tell your dad that.”

“Why?”

“Then they may find out that I have the
same
address.  We’re doomed then.”

“What am I going to say to my dad?” I know I can’t keep him
waiting for too long.

“Tell him you didn’t change the address.”

“But it’s a lie.”

“It’s
not
!” She stares at me.

I can’t understand what she meant but I have no time to find
the answer—my father’s still waiting on the other end.

“Hey Dad, you still there?”

“Sure I am.  So what happened?”

“Um…someone’s drunk.  Just a minor emergency.”

Stella gives me a thumb up.

“So, did you move?”

“Heck, no.  I’m too busy studying, you know.”

Stella tosses me a big kiss.

“What happened to the package then?  Do you know?”

What happened? Heck, of course I know.  They sent the
package to my old address and it was kicked back.  That’s what happened.  But I
can’t tell my dad the damn truth.

“Um…” Fuck!  I’ve always been someone who can think quickly
on my feet.  But now my head is a total blank.  “Um, I’m not so sure…”  Then I
get an idea.  “You know what, Dad?”

“What?”

“I bet the campus mailroom dudes messed it up.  I will
definitely fix that.”

“That’s great, Colton.”

I chat with Dad for a few more minutes and then hang up.

“Phew…” I drop to the floor, laying my cheek against the
cold hardwood. That was too close.

“Smart, Colton.” Stella bends down to kiss me.

“Yeah, right.  But he’ll figure it out.”

“No, he won’t.”

I sit up, holding my laps with both hands.  “He
will

I bet he is going to send the fuc… okay, that package again.  Then it’s going
to go back to him again!”
See, I
am
the top student.
 I wink.

“Do you happen to know the service to forward mail?” She asks
innocently, placing her lips on mine.  I kiss her hard.

STELLA

I walk towards the lecture hall.  A group of girls are
laughing.  I can tell that they are gossiping about something funny… and dirty.

However, they stop talking when I walk by.  The hallway
suddenly becomes so quiet that I can hear my own breath.

Odd.
Am I wearing something funny or do I smell bad?
I’m not so sure.  I speed up past the crowd quickly.  Then I hear the mumbling
and giggling again.

Weird.

But I couldn’t care less.  I want to find a good seat.

The seats are almost all taken.  My seat is so far back that
I wish I had a pair of binoculars with me.

Then I hear a girly voice, tiny yet clear.  “Yeah, that’s
her.”

“Ew, so gross.” It’s another girly voice.

My cheeks burn.  I know what they’re talking about.  These
cheap chicks, they might have fucked sloppy dudes no one else wants to touch.
But now they feel that they are so fucking morally correct that they are finger-pointing
me.

It’s pissing me off.  It’s
none of your fucking business,
you assholes.
But I can’t say anything.  This is hell.

I leave the class the moment it’s over.

Finally in the safety of my own home, I kick off my shoes, not
caring where they land. Immediately, I’m in bed, miserable.

What’s wrong with these fucking assholes?  It’s none of
their business.  And they are college students, right?  How can they be so
close-minded? How can they treat me like shit?

“Tell me who the fuck they are. I won’t let you get bullied
like this.”  Colton is so pissed his face is bright red.

I think for a while and then smile.

“Stella, what’s going on?  Did they drive you… crazy?”

“Nope.  I’m not crazy or mad or anything.  You know what?”

“What?” He looks at me, rapt.

“People always say things no matter what you do.  Let’s
ignore them.”

“But still…” He raises his fist.

“Look, our life is ours.  Let’s enjoy it.  A few days later,
they will be gossiping about something else.”

“How about I talk to the college?”

“To those committee assholes?” I shake my head.  “Come,
Colton, come give me a massage. I’m so tense.  Yep, hmmm… Great.”  Gosh, I
can’t believe how stressed out I was.  The massage really helps.

I feel Colton sliding his hand along my boobs, rubbing them
gently.  I know what he has in mind: he wants to fuck.  We haven’t had hot sex
for a while.

Should we do it then?  Is it going to hurt my baby?  I’m not
so sure.
