I said nothing, waiting for him. He had to get it out, whatever it was.

“Angie, I’ve come to realize that I’ve fallen in love with you.”

I stared up at him in disbelief. My mouth dropped open. Then, the emotions gushed out. “Jax... I think I fell for you the moment you opened your door to me.”

Then, his lips settled on mine, and his weight was settled comfortably over me. I don’t think I had ever felt so sheltered or protected in my life.

I don’t know how long we lay there; it could have been minutes or hours. Time stood still. I know it sounds corny, but that’s how I felt. By the time Jax shifted his weight and rolled onto his side, I grumbled a protest in my throat. His hand caressed my shoulder, cupped my breast, playfully tweaked my nipple, and then roamed down my rib cage, along my hips, and then up between my thighs. His warm palm cupped my pussy and I looked at him.

“You ready for round two?” he asked with a grin.

I was just about to answer when two sharp knocks came at the door. My heart immediately began pounding and I cast a fearful glance toward it.

“It’s all right, it’s Michael.” Swearing under his breath, Jax quickly left the cot, yanking up his pants and buttoning them as he strode to the door. His shirt dropped back into place. He cracked it open and then, glancing quickly over his shoulder at me, gestured for me to wait. He disappeared out the door.

I quickly scrambled off of the cot and got dressed. Then, I walked toward the small counter and look for the fixings for coffee. My thoughts were all jumbled up.

Jax loved me?

I loved Jax, I knew that.

Were these feelings just the intense feelings of survival, the desire to feel alive? The aftermath of incredible adrenaline surges? Did he mean it? Could he? I knew how I felt. I had never felt this way about a guy before, but one thing I knew. No matter what happened from this day forward, I knew I would always love Jax.

The door opened and I spun around, still a little jittery from the events of yesterday.

“Sorry,” Jax said. He noticed that I had gotten dressed and nodded toward the counter. “Making coffee?”

I nodded and then watched as Jax entered the room, followed by Jakob, Michael, and another man, almost as large as Jakob, but one I didn’t know.

“Angie, this is Zack.”

I glanced up at Zack. He looked just as rough-and-tumble as Jax, Michael and Jakob. A splash of dried blood clung to the hairline just above his right temple. “Are you hurt?” I stepped closer to examine it.

Jax lifted a hand. “He’s okay, Angie,” he said. He cast a glance at Zack. “She’s a nurse,” he said, as if that explained everything.

Zack smiled down at me. “I’m fine, just a little scratch.”

An awkward silence filled the room and with the can of coffee held in one hand and a measuring cup in the other, I glanced between Jax and the others. My heart sank. “Okay, what’s going on now? What happened?”

“Angie,” Jax said. “The boys and I have a few things to wrap up. You can’t stay here alone. Zack here is going to take you to a new location—”

I began to protest. “But—”

“But nothing,” Jax interrupted. “The cabin may have been compromised—”

I frowned in confusion. “But I thought you got them all yesterday—”

Zack spoke up. “There’s no such thing as getting them all, Angie,” he explained gently. “There’s always more to take their place. Their network is incredibly complex and compartmentalized. The fact is, we can’t take any chances with your safety. I’ll take you to another location and stay there with you until Jax returns.”

I glanced at Jax. He stared at me and then offered a nod. Was this it? Where was he going? I quickly glanced at Michael and Jakob, and they stared back at me, their expressions blank. I supposed that they were quite used to this, but I wasn’t. I looked back at Jax. “But your back—”

“My back is fine, Angie. Really.” He glanced at the others and gestured with his chin. “We have to go, but I’ll be back.”

He stepped toward me, and ignoring the others, wrapped his arms around me and kissed me, right in front of them. My heart pounded with dread. Was this a goodbye? I didn’t know. Just then, I got a true inkling of what Stephanie might have felt every time Jax left. Would I ever see him again?

He leaned his head down, his lips brushing up against my ear. “You’ll wait for me, won’t you?” he whispered.

I stared up at him and knew without a doubt that I would. I would always wait for him.
