Now, in his bedroom, it felt almost natural to be sitting next to him, to be taking care of him and to allow herself to relax in his company.

"Well, I don't know about
her
," he said, "but I surely am glad my heart didn't drag me to an ugly mate."

Simone blushed and started working harder on his wound, afraid to look up. Yes, Charlie had told her she was beautiful, in the past, but recently he'd taken every opportunity to point out her weight, her appetite, the clothes that "just weren’t appropriate for her build." She'd felt less and less attractive and started hiding her figure in loose shirts and oversized pants and coats. Now that her self-image had been reduced to the ground, she found it hard to believe that any man would find her appealing. Not to mention a man like Brett with his perfect body and gorgeous face. Suddenly she felt his fingers on her chin. He lifted her face up and she found the strength to look up into his eyes.

"Hey," he said quietly, "with all this talking and explaining, I forgot to say the most important thing. You shouldn't be embarrassed by a compliment. I've never seen a more beautiful, more magical woman than you. You
are
and with me, you can be sure I'm not just saying that. We are really bad liars."

He winked at her and she smiled. It was hard to let go of fear and mistrust. A few hours ago she'd been ready to live her whole life with a man who'd lied and abused her. Now, she was listening to another man tell her those same words and her mind spun countless reasons she should back out now. Humans were nothing like bear shifters and their hearts took a while to recognize true love. One thing was not so different, though. Her body.

As Brett's fingers lingered on her face and his eyes stayed locked on hers, she felt a sensation she'd thought was lost on her. It had nothing to do with her jumbled thoughts, with her confused emotions or her rational, questioning mind. It was simple, clean, and powerful. A body recognizing another body. A chemical reaction. One magnetic field running into another. She shivered and the sensation spread down and out, tingling and warm, promising pleasure. She could come to her senses and ask more questions, make sure, avoid the risk, the possibility of hurt. Or, she could surrender and take a chance on a man she hardly knew, but one who had saved her life and made her feel safe.

“I love you, Simone,” Brett said tenderly.

When he leaned in to kiss her lips, she finally let go. She returned the kiss timidly at first but then with a growing passion, the energy flowing through her body making her bold and weak at the same time. Their tongues met and twisted in a dance of shared desire, each of them trying to get closer to the other, to experience more, to taste the other's unique flavor.

Without breaking the kiss, Brett took her by the arms and pulled her into his lap, her knees landing on the soft bedding, while his feet stood firmly grounded on the floor. She took his face into her palms and struggled to keep the kiss last forever, but he soon broke it only to put his burning lips on the side of her neck, where he slowly traced his way down with his moist tongue. Simone shuddered with pleasure as goose bumps broke out on her smooth arms. She bent her head backwards and closed her eyes, her long hair brushing against his bare knees and her body squirming in his strong arms, hungry for more of him.

Her panties had slicked with her growing need and she felt his stiff erection grow even harder underneath her, pulsing against her most sensitive spot. Her skirt had bunched up around her hips and now only a thin piece of moist fabric separated his throbbing cock from her. When he grabbed her ample buttocks and squeezed them, pushing her down against him, she moaned lustfully, a wave of sensuous warmth washing over her. His kisses were getting more and more feverish, his desire growing and soon, when it was clear that she needed him as badly as he did, he ripped open her shirt, exposing her luscious, big breasts, pulling back a little to admire their subtle bounce out of confinement.

"God, you are so
gorgeous
, Simone," he said in a low, coarse voice and lowered his mouth over one of her hardened pink nipples, eliciting a deep sigh of pleasure from her. While massaging the other breast with his hand, he started twirling his tongue around her nipple and gently sucking it, sending jolts of electricity down to her wet, aching pussy. Delirious from all the pleasure, Simone started bucking uncontrollably against his hard dick, her engorged, sensitive clit rubbing against him. He moved over to her other nipple, his free hand grabbing her ass and pulling her fast and hard towards him.

She couldn't bare the sweet ache any longer. A wild, animalistic urge had possessed her and she was desperate to feel him fill her up, reach deep inside her. She reached down and pulled her panties to the side, the first contact of skin on skin sending wild shivers towards her limbs, and taking his massive, stiff dick in her hand, she guided it into her, mentally bracing herself for his size. In one smooth thrust, he was inside her, stretching and filling her, making her whimper impatiently. Immediately both of them started rocking in unison, the intense friction driving them to loud groans. Brett grabbed her ass tightly and started moving her vigorously up and down over his huge erection, her clit gliding against his hard, muscled body. Each powerful thrust only made them cling to each other more desperately, their fingers digging into sweaty skin, their lips searching each other and finally uniting in a fervent kiss.

Soon, Simone felt the approach of a sensation so potent, she almost recoiled in fear of exploding, but Brett didn't let go of her and only grabbed her harder slamming her pussy down on his pulsating cock. Finally, breaking into a scream, Simone felt the shattering orgasm flood over her, nearly knocking her unconscious with pleasure, making her entire body convulse in ecstasy. In mere seconds, she sensed him erupting inside her with a deep groan, his sperm coming in hot, forceful, liquid waves.

They finally crashed down on the soft bed, not letting go of each other, their bodies still buzzing with the intense climax. When their breathing finally evened out and their heartbeats slowed down, Brett looked at her, caressing her cheek with the back of his hand.

"Actually," he said, "on a second thought, you are really not my type. I think I’m going to go now. "

Simone looked at him confused for a moment and catching the playful glint in his eyes, she suddenly burst into laughter.

"Don't even joke about it," she said and smacked him lightly across the chest.

He pulled her into his embrace again.

"You are right, I won't," he said, now seriously, "You need to remember that there is no such thing as
my type
. There's only
you
and then there’s everybody else."

She smiled, her face glowing with happiness. It would be hard to learn to trust him unconditionally, the way he seemed to trust her, but at least it wouldn't be that difficult to narrow down her type to just him.

"Okay," she whispered. "I think I'm ready to meet some more bear shifters now."

"Hey," he protested, "had enough of me already?"

"Not nearly," she said, "but the clock is ticking and now that we've found each other, I'm not letting some ugly bear woman take you away from me, so we better hurry."

They both burst into laughter and fell back onto the bed, their lips finding each other as easily as if they'd been doing it for years.

CHAPTER ONE

~ADA~

Ada Hastings was no gambler, but like most people, she would happily wager on a sure winner—such as the inevitability of death and taxes.

Or the fact that outside of a zoo enclosure, there were no bears in New Zealand.

In which case, what the hell was that big hairy thing tearing through the bush on the track below her, and, right there, diving into the pool at the base of the waterfall?

Huge, furry, and brown, it looked completely bear, and if Ada couldn’t encourage some movement out of her legs, she was about to become bear lunch. But that was of little consequence, because if her thundering heart was anything to go by, she was probably about to have a lethal heart attack, anyway.

Why hadn’t she taken more notice of those nature programmes on the television? When meeting a bear, were you supposed to make yourself big or small? Noisy or quiet? There was something about trees, but she couldn’t remember if you were meant to climb them to escape, or if the bear would climb them to get a better idea of where you’d run off to.

Accepting her fate without some sort of fight was not an option, so Ada armed herself with the only thing available—a dead frond from a tree fern. It was a good eight feet long, so hopefully she could tickle the bear to death.

She tried to stay utterly still, breathe quietly, and not think about the thick scent of fear that leached from every pore of her skin. It was hard not to wonder about how much it would hurt when the bear killed her. Would it be quick, or would the bear rip off an arm, chomp for a bit, and then go for the organs? Maybe a juicy liver? Do bears even know about anatomy, and where to find a liver, or do they just dive right in and feast?

What a holiday! On the Coromandel Peninsula in summer, the only danger should have been sunburn, mosquitoes and hangovers. Why had she hiked this far into the bush, alone?

And seriously, a bear.

Ada watched the bear with the same focus she’d keep on a large spider climbing the wall; so long as you knew exactly where it was, at any given time, everything would be okay. The spider wouldn’t crawl down the front of your shirt, and the bear wouldn’t have you for lunch.

The bear continued to swim in the pool, going right under the waterfall, at times using it the way one would use a shower. For some reason, this looked incredibly cute, and the journalist in her wanted to grab her phone and record the bizarre event. Her optimistic side was starting to believe that she would make it out of the bush alive, and she really wanted photographic evidence to prove what she was seeing.

Within minutes, she was mesmerised by the surreal scene. Her fear had dissipated with the resignation that this was a lose-lose event, allowing her to give in to the situation, and go with whatever occurred. She even moved further along the track, slowly, to gain a new vantage point.

When the bear finally left the pool, the sun had risen to its full midday point in the sky, piercing a break in the tree canopy. The stunning creature appeared spot-lit, the water droplets on its magnificent cinnamon-coloured fur glistening like jewels.

Ada held her breath when the bear rose onto its hind legs, standing tall, nose lifted, scenting the air. Although she thought she’d hidden herself well, the bear seemed to stare directly at her. When it emitted a deep rumble, she trembled. The creature had located her presence.

She tried a David Attenborough move, backing quietly away, and in doing so stepped on a rotting log that gave way with a loud crack. Ada made a long cry of alarm as she tumbled to the track below her.

Right in the path of the bear.

Ada hit the ground with a hefty thump, winding her. The bear was only a few strides away, and as it neared she squeezed her eyes shut, and held her breath. Blood pounded so hard in her ears she could hardly make out the sounds the bear made. She curled into a ball and waited for the pain that would come when the enormous claws she’d seen tore through her flesh. In seconds she was overcome with dizziness, and with that, everything turned black. Ada fainted.
