They were staying in a mountain lodge, in the most romantic room ever. The bathtub was in the bedroom, and there was an open fire. They’d only left the room to eat in the lovely restaurant and Harley had been out for plenty of runs, enjoying the opportunity to explore unfamiliar countryside.
Harley laid his hand on her belly.
“I love you, baby,” he whispered in her ear.
“I love you too, sweetheart,” she replied, nestling into him.
“And do you know what’s coming in a few days?” he asked.
“Yeah, Christmas!” she said. He flicked some bubbles in her direction.
“And what’s happening before that?”
“Uh, would that be the full-moon mating frenzy, where you’re going to do your best to make me pregnant with your pups?” she said.
“Yeah, you’ve got it,” he said with a laugh. “So how about it?” Melisa pressed her lips together.
“You know I can’t wait to have your pups, but I need a couple more months. I want to be around to help the girls, and it’ll be crazy if we’re all having babies at the same time. Besides, I want to enjoy that hot body of yours for a little longer, before I get too big to do all those crazy positions we like.” Since they’d been together, Melissa had been making up for lost time, and their sex life had been intense. “I don’t blame you,” he said. “You can’t blame a wolf for trying though. But, there is something else I want to ask you.”
“What’s that?” Melissa turned her head and met his eyes, hearing the seriousness in his tone.

“I don’t know. Hopefully hanging out with you,” she replied with a grin.
“Great. Because I was wondering if you’d do me the honor of publically becoming my mate, in a shifter mating ceremony?”
“Harley!” Melissa screamed, and spun around in the water, making half of it slop out of the tub. “We’re having our ceremony on New Year’s Eve? That’s the most romantic thing I can think of!” Harley broke into a grin.
“I hoped you’d be happy with that,” he said. “It just seemed to me like a really poignant moment to have it, right on the cusp of a new year, when the past and future come together, just like in our relationship.”
“I agree. And you’re so clever!” she said, throwing herself on him, wrapping her arms around his neck, and pulling him into a long, loving kiss.
Two weeks later
Harley couldn’t have a werewolf mating ceremony. He had no family members to carry out the old rituals for him. So he had a bear ceremony instead. Dressed in their warmest clothes, he and Melissa spoke their vows to each other in a sacred outdoor space, deep in the forest, with Lauren, Dina, Kristin, Connor, Logan, Roman, Tamika and her husband watching them. It was beautiful in its simplicity, and tears shone in Melissa’s eyes as Harley told her that he would be her mate always and forever. He’d said this to her many times over the past weeks, of course, but it was incredible to hear him saying it in public. The bears had given him permission to tell their history, of how they’d been at school together, and he’d always known that she was the girl for him. And then how they’d lost each other, and he’d thought he’d never see her again, but then how the birth of Lauren’s baby – and a little help from Shiftr – had brought them together. By the time he’d finished the story, everyone’s eyes glistened with emotion.
When they got back to Harley’s house, a party was waiting for them. All of the bear clan and Harley’s friends and patients were there to help them celebrate, and the party went on well into the new year.
At one point in the evening, Tamika drew Melissa aside.
“I’m so, so happy you’ve got together with Harley,” she said. “I always thought there was something about that young man. Something a little dark, a little tortured. I don’t know what you’ve done, but you’ve brought him into the light, Melissa.” Melissa grinned and squeezed her hand.
“He brought me out into the light too, Tamika, believe me!” she said.
