And Helen woke him, believing him. ‘Of course you didn’t dear. You have to accept that you got over that day.....’ She stroked his head and woke him gently, like a child.

Dan Mullen knew that he had faced the man, that he had redeemed himself. There was just that doubt about why he froze that day. He told Helen all about his fears.

‘Dan, you have proved yourself in every way. There’s nothing else you can do. You must accept that you won back everything that was lost on that day, alright?’

He managed to nod and smile. Then just for a second, deep inside, there was an image in his head of his shaking hand, grabbing at a whisky bottle. Then there was a kiss on his cheek and he knew that there would be no more nightmares, no more memories tugging at him like a kid at his pa’s coat.
