“You seem to think being locked in this room with me is the worst your life could get.” The first hint of calloused wit danced across your turned up lips. “It isn’t. Solitary is far more brutal than anything I have in mind for you.”

Silence fell between us, your eyes locked with mine. I heard the pounding of my heart, the source of its speed no longer the level of my temper but the magnitude of the unknown.

Seconds turned into minutes as our standoff continued, the only sound in the room had been the rattled inhales of my labored breath.

“Can I ask you something?” I finally questioned, somewhat cautiously.

“You can ask me anything as long as you promise to behave from now on,” you said, with one eyebrow raised at me.

I nodded in response, even if it was a lie, and asked, “Where am I?”

“Home,” was all you said.

“How long have I been here?”

“A few days,” you answered, tilted your head to the side and shrugged your shoulders like time no longer mattered.

“How did I get here?” I had so many questions whirling around in my head and your short answers had not helped; they were merely causing more.

“You wanted to come, so I brought you.”

“Wanted to come?” The confusion slipped from my mouth as I shook my head.

“You said so yourself.” Your words sounded confident but you nodded emphatically in what I assumed was an attempt to reassure yourself — or maybe me.

“Why me?” I whispered.

“You’re special, you are my Annabel.”

The rush of blood through my veins was a dull roar in my ears. “Who are you?”

“I’m your Cage.”

Writing a book is hard! It is! And making sure that book is actually something another human being would want to read is even harder and sometimes take a village. I’m lucky that I have a great village.

To my family that has supported me from the very first day that I said I was going to write a book. You’ve stuck by me through many without (much) complaining, and I could never ask for more. Love you guys!

To my fellow authors that I now call friend. You make me laugh, you make me feel, and you keep me sane. We trudge through this crazy world together and whether we like it or not it’s our shared passion that keeps us moving forward. I love you ladies (and a couple fellas) with all my heart and I couldn’t continue putting fingers to keyboard every day without you.

To my lovely betas…oh my lovely betas. I know I play with your emotions, tease you quite often, and sometimes disappear altogether. But you ladies have stuck with me and continue to selflessly support me in my best and my worst. You make me better! You help make what I write something others might actually enjoy.

To the wizard of words, Raelene Green. Your words make me feel smart and for that alone you deserve an award. Thanks for still putting up with me especially when I drive you crazy with my nonstop text messages.

To the lady that makes my books beautiful, Lindsay Sparkes. I am beyond blessed to call you friend. You are a lovely soul that God placed in my life for many reasons. I can never thank you enough for all that you do for me

And to everyone in my village that I know I’m missing, thank you as well.
