‘Don’t you remember my cooking lesson? I don’t like mavericks who go off and do their own thing. Those poor kids in the wrong place at the wrong time. If Mr Sampson wanted to
do something about it, he should have made a phone call first.’ Braithwaite glanced back to the house. ‘Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m eating dinner with my family and
I’d like to be left alone.’ He put one foot on the doorstep, before twisting back. ‘Mr Hunter.’
‘What?’
‘Are you familiar with the work of Friedrich Nietzsche?’
Andrew was ready to leave, wanting out of the conversation. ‘Not really.’
Braithwaite nodded. ‘Well . . . “battle not with monsters, lest ye become a monster”.’ He paused for a moment, letting it sink in, one hand on the door. ‘It’s
interesting with whom you choose to spend your time.’
‘Who are you talking about?’
‘Your assistant . . .’ He clicked his fingers three times in quick succession. ‘She has an
interesting
past, you could say.’
Andrew felt fixed to the spot, not knowing to what Braithwaite was referring.
‘
I’m not a psycho
.’
He opened his mouth, ready to ask, but he could see Braithwaite willing him on, wanting him to be interested. He stopped himself before the words could come out: if he was going to ask anyone,
it should be Jenny.
Braithwaite spotted the change, eyes narrowing as he grinned more widely. ‘Now, have a good evening, Mr Hunter. In the meantime, look after yourself.’
The front door closed with a solid click and Andrew turned to walk back to his car, the wind suddenly whipping up, fizzing through the trees and sending a chill along his coatless back.
Brrr.
Bloody February.
SOMETHING WICKED
The first book featuring private investigator Andrew Hunter
Nicholas Carr disappeared on his eighteenth birthday and the world has moved on. His girlfriend has gone to university, his friends now have jobs and the police have new cases
to investigate.
But his father, Richard, can’t forget the three fingers the police dug up from a sodden Manchester wood. What happened to Nicholas on the night he disappeared, and why did he never return
home?
A private investigator is Richard’s last hope – but Andrew Hunter has his own problems. There’s something about his assistant that isn’t quite right. Jenny’s
brilliant but reckless, and he can’t work out what she stands to gain from their working relationship. By the time he figures out who’s a danger and who’s not, it might all be too
late . . .

A gripping standalone thriller from million copy bestseller Kerry Wilkinson
Craig Macklin was a teenager when his headteacher told him he was heading either to prison or the grave. Instead, Craig left the north of England, saying goodbye to his friends
and family to start a new life.
Thirteen years on, redundant and separated from his wife, he returns for the first time.
It’s Christmas: markets in full swing, lights twinkling, shoppers shopping, revellers revelling.
Manchester has seen a revolution. The buildings soar higher, the shopping centres sprawl wider. New industries have replaced old and yet, away from the glitter, the tinsel, the hot spiced cider
and the enormous inflatable Santa, some things will never change.
Amid the season, there are secrets from which he cannot escape and, when debt-collectors attack his parents’ house, Craig realises the teenage hellraiser he left behind might not be so
buried after all.
