I wade ashore. Lewis is holding back.

It is
almost
the same, but not quite. It takes me a few seconds to work out why.

Then I get it: the landscape is the same as when Danny said goodbye to me, but the weather’s what’s different. Then, it was stormy. Now, despite the devastation, it’s
beautifully serene. I drink in the sharp blackness of the rocks, the pattern the lapping waves make against the sand. To the left as I face the island, I see the tiny archway that leads to a
marble-smooth piece of rock, where Danny and I found just enough privacy to be ourselves; to fall in love.

The Alice who did that seems very different from the Alice I am now. Naïve, I suppose. To think that love was all happiness, sunshine, butterflies. I thought love could work miracles.

Lewis takes my hand.

I look up into his face. Maybe I was right about love. How else could I have found my sister, found Lewis, found this place?

‘This is it,’ I tell him. ‘You found the Beach.’

We
found it,’ he corrects me. ‘What a team!’

I smile. His hand in mine feels warmer than the sun.

I think he’ll be good for you, you know
.

My wild, mercurial sister wasn’t right about everything, not by a long way. But I’m pretty sure she’s right about this.

‘It’s exactly what I thought paradise would look like,’ Lewis murmurs.

I turn and kiss him very softly on the lips, before whispering,

‘And
this
is how paradise feels.’
